Avionics upgrade G5 vs GI275

My preference for whatever it’s worth: I added two G275s and still kept the analog altimeter, VSI, air speed and mechanical turn coordinator.

Love it. Easy to see/ easy to use the old instruments at a quick scan, while also using the data from the GI 275s.
This is the way. I have the same set-up. Love the redundancy. The 275's are pure magic in most ways, but I really hate speed and altitude tapes, so I tend to fly still looking at the analog instruments. The difference is now that my AI flags has synthetic vision and my HSI is a moving map with traffic on it. Really, the only downside is a somewhat more expensive pitot-static check.

The 275 vertical speed actually works for people shooting ground speed x5? On the g5 I find I am using the analog just cause it’s so much easier to read.

Turn on synthetic vision or FD bars and don't worry about GS x5

Same. I fly a lot of aerobatics, so need to be able to very quickly reference speed, altitude, and G in a split second glance at the panel. I much prefer analog dials for that.

Counterpoint: keeping the analog ASI and ALT is good redundancy if you have the panel space.
You can still keep it if you wish. But you can still legally fly if one of them goes kaput. Not true for the G5.

Serious question. Why the focus on ground speed? Even as an IFR pilot, ground speed for me is available in so many other places (GTN, EFB, E-6B, iphone, ad nasuem) that I don’t really worry about it even though the G5 PFD throws it out on the bottom left corner.

I get in a simple 172 planning 10gph and 4hrs VFR/3.5 IFR duration that rules of thumb can work, but I’ve never given thought to ground speed except when planning. If something’s wildly off airborne, it’s simple enough to work through.

Not letting me do that just yet in the training still a fair number of hours left. Instructor makes me turn off the FD when hand flying.

They seem small and harder to read than my G5's.
Apparently the display is actually bigger on the GI275, but the physical housing is bigger on the G5 giving everyone the impression the G5 has a bigger display.

Also more info on the GI275's dispay, so that can make you think the AI portion (or whatever you're displaying) is smaller.

Judge for yourself:
So I just looked it up...
GI-275 is 2.69" in diameter with a resolution of 480x433
G5 is 2.8" x 2.1" with a resolution of 320x240

What this really doesn't tell you, but I can see from the picture and what I think the guys that did the measurements were talking about, is the AI is bigger w/ bigger command bars on the GI275. The "box" appears bigger on the G5, but not the actual display.

One thing I don’t like on the Piper panels is the plastic overlay sticks out some and blocks some of my view at the top since I am taller.
I lower the seat as much as possible. was like that on my buddies cheerokee and arrow making the 275 hard see for me.

Yeah - on my 182 I'm going to trim part 1/2 inch of the panel overlay to better reveal the very top of the HSI. This will give a better view of the heading bug, current track pointer, etc. I can't blame Cessna, it's the after market panel overlay that some previous owner put on. Some day I'll have the entire panel overlay removed and panel front replaced.

So while the 275 has a smaller screen (4.22 sq in) it has more (877k) pixels. In comparison, the G5 is 5.88 sq in but has 452k pixels.

Yes, but also look at the pics posted. The amount of the screen they used for the AI on the G5 appears to be smaller than the size of the AI on the 275. So it's not just the overall size of the device, or the screen size, it is the size of the "displayed" information.

I wouldn't be surprised if G5 owners looked at the pics and say the GI275 is smaller while Gi275 owners say the G5 is smaller. :)
So, you’re saying pilots - mostly guys with egos - have trouble with perceived vs actual sizes?

Pro tip: When boarding someone's plane that's had a glass instrument upgrade, be sure to exclaim "Wow, it's so big!"

GI-275 owner here, and I can't help but think the G-5 must be bigger when I'm hand flying it in IMC.

I have dual G5's in my 172. When I upgraded in 2019, the GI275's were new on the market and didn't support the GFC500 autopilot. A couple of years later, I added a GI275 EIS (engine monitor) so my panel has both G5's and a GI275. The 275's have a much clearer display and even though it's a little smaller, it is easier to read. If I was doing the upgrade now, I'd definitely go with the GI275's.Instrument Panel-1.jpg
