3934V

Nice! I hung my left wing on my RV9A for the final time on Saturday, got all the fuel/brake/electrical connections and hung the flap last night. Feels good when you start assembling major chunks for the final time!

we start thinking about flying.

I had a flap-up spring on 4190V break and you are right, damn near the whole day.

Jim

It took most of a day to figure out how to do it. it actually takes about 5 minutes after you figure it out.

manufacturer a tube long enough to hold the spring stretched, flatten it at both ends, and notch it so the spring will not slip off. place the spring's long end in the vise, place the tube inside it and stretch the spring over it, place in the hole and attach long end of the sprig to the flap, raise the flap, and connect the forward end to the spar, lower the flap, remove the tube. It takes about three tries to get the proper length tube.

As I recall (40 years is a long time) mine had to do with a wooden dowel, a jigsaw kerf into one end, and a couple of stout alligator clips. But it was STILL a bitchkitty to do.

That's funny since you recently posted something along the lines of any 170 under $30k is garbage.

How about a 182A in as-is condition with a 1000 hour engine with a knock in it for $6k? See the pretty blue airplane to the left? All it took was $20K in parts and pieces to make it a showplane.

Jim

RE - spring - stretch it to proper length (scissor jack off a car) and freeze it in a block of ice, install, ice melts, done.

If you measure it at the end of the work day, freeze it overnight and install in the morning it should take 1/2 hour tops including modifying jack.

there is always an exception to the rule, and this one does have a high timed engine. If this had a 180 horse it would be sold already. @ $50k

Good days work, the second wing is up.

What sized number should I put on ? 2 inch?

Depends, do you need the big numbers to fly into Canada?

I believe you do, but that is easily fixed if necessary by going to a vinyl lettering shop prior to departure.

I'd put the small numbers on it.

Latest pictures, we pushed it out today for fuel. We are getting close. landing light cover is off paint dying, as is the right wing root cover and a couple other small panels.

needs trim.

Tom, Your bird is looking great.

It's getting there, the money is starting to show. :)

I might get to start it tomorrow, we'll see how much time I have for myself tomorrow. it really depends upon how much fuel we have on the floor in the morning. :)

10-4 on fuel on the floor.

I really need to schedule a trip to Whidbey soon

I really need to schedule a trip to Whidbey soon

Try any time other than last week of April to the end of July, we would love to have ya.

We may be passing by your house coming or going. we have not confirmed the route yet, probably 90, 39, 80/90, 90. 86. 88. then to Cape Cod, Plattsburgh, DC, then home.

this trip is a busman's holiday and family obligation requirement. So many miles so little time.

I guess it is officially an aircraft with "N" numbers and all

it looks that way because of the curve of the vertical.

If it is, it's going to stay that way.

Now Jim, admit that it was more than a few years ago you did that. You've been flying N73CQ to Oshkosh for as long as I've been going I think.

Great job Tom. I will look forward to seeing it in person sometime at a local fly-in. It looks like you've done a spectacular job bringing it back to better than new condition.

Yea, definitely some bleed through on the tape on the wingtip stripes.

I had just pulled the masking, the paint was too soft to do any thing to it, it will get detailed and polished

Have you tried to use the new masking tapes? they simply can't be made to stick to tight corners around the rivets, I went over that many times trying to get the tapes to lay down.

A little rubbing compound and a pencil eraser will clean them up.

I flew the 170 there in 73,4,5 the the 172 in 75-88, then the 182 from 90 to the present.

4190V - 170
3618S - 172
73CQ - 182

That plane looks incredible. The pictures documenting probably don't capture the amount of effort to get it this close to completion, but they are impressive.

Thanks for sharing.

Tom, you do beautiful work!

I checked them today, sure enough BOTH are crooked, the stencil must have been cut that way, because we have a matching set.

3M Fine Line tape works well for me.

The whole stencil was cut crooked, the 39 slants aft as well.
