By the folks that announced the "D-Jet" exactly 10 years ago. Amazing!

45th Cirrus CAPS (Parachute) activation in Aus and the best footage caught to date.

Re: 45th Cirrus CAPS (Parachute) activation in Aus and the best footage caught to dat Some have been repaired and flown again, but in every case that I've heard of, the insurance company has "totaled' the plane.

    cell phones!

+1 for Galaxy S3. I got one that's like new on Craig's List for $180. I have it on Ting, along with the wife's LG Marquee. Total bill is usually $28/month. I've been very happy with the phone and carrier. Here's a $25 discount link for Ting (yes, it pays me $25 if you use it... if you do...

January/February glider vacation. FL, AZ or CA?

I got my add-on last winter, here: http://www.miamigliders.com. Great people, I recommend them 100%. There was normally some lift in the afternoon, when fair weather cumulus would build. But variety is the spice of life, and if I go again this winter, I'm just wondering if the weather in...

    Cessna Mustang vs. TBM 850

Is the type rating (and maybe the insurance company's training requirement) for a jet much more demanding than a turbo-prop? I'd expect anybody flying a TBM (with all the training required) would be up to ATP standards. Is the maintenance of a jet (i.e. phase inspections) a lot more work for...

    Cessna Mustang vs. TBM 850

They basically do the same mission, but the Mustang flies in blue skies at FL410, with an extra engine. While TBM drivers in the mid 20s are looking up at towering Cu all summer ...knowing they'll need to be a hotter than a Shuttle pilot if that single pony up front poops. Yet these two...

    What's in a name?

When they relocated the Willmar, Mn airport (KILL) a few miles away, the new ID is KBDH. I'm told BDH stands for Big Damn Headache!

Student and CFI killed, KDWH Hooks Houston

That was my biggest challenge to overcome when I got my glider rating last winter! After doing it enough, my emotions caught up with my brains, and I finally felt it wasn't an emergency, just because I released from the tow plane at 1000'! On the 180 degree turn question, I think it all...

    Went around.

I got pretty consistent making wheel landings in the Super Decathlon, all while solo. I'd fly it down, usually with a little power added just before the numbers. Then I went to show my finely-honed skill to a friend ...his weight in back changed everything! The tail dropped when the wheels...

Should I File IFR Or Just Stay VFR?

I'd file IFR, then cancel and stay with flight following if it became too difficult or tedious to deviate as needed. The flight is so short, you'll probably be landing before you could pick up an IFR enroute if they make you file via flight service.

    Glen Dell dies

The 2nd video here shows the whole flight. Sad stuff, like all crashes. It's a jarring experience to read through the NTSB reports and see how many guys, like Glen Dell, who are way more experienced than I'll ever be, and probably way better pilots, but that for some reason or another...

Creative Tax Strategies for Buying a Plane

I did something similar for 8 years. I'm no CPA, but from what I was told, it's pretty much common sense: You can write-off expenses that were for the business, and a percentage of fixed costs that's proportional to the business use of the plane. Really no different than a company car. If...

    Cirrus SR20/22 vs Piper Arrow

There have currently been 37 successful Cirrus parachute landings, with 77 survivors, and you point to a single case where the plane caught fire on the way down as evidence of my "false sense of security"? Brilliant, sir. Thanks for waking me up!

    Cirrus SR20/22 vs Piper Arrow

I've got time in both types. On average, I would expect maintenance cost to be about the same, but with any particular examples, I'm sure costs will vary widely. It's important not to buy a lemon ...let me know if you figure out how! The Cirrus will cost more to purchase, sales tax will...

    Preventing a Gear-up Landing

I don't fly a retract, but if I did, I'd give this type gizmo some serious thought: http://www.p2inc.com/audioadvisory.asp Another thought: does anybody make a gps that would announce "1000 feet, check landing gear" on the intercom? That could be a lot less costly than the p2. A buddy of...

    HVAC experts???

Low freon. When it's low, the pressure in the evaporator drops, which causes a corresponding drop in temperature (low fluid == low pressure, kinda makes sense). A tech can top it off easily enough, but the real problem is finding and fixing the leak. If your system is more than 10 years old...

KeePass + DropBox. Works great across iPad, Android, Windows & Linux. Open source & free. I haven't used any other PW manager, but I can't imagine how anything could be better than this setup.
