    Another crash at KSUT

https://www.cbs17.com/news/north-carolina-news/pilot-injured-after-small-plane-crashes-near-church-at-nc-coast/ This makes two here in the last 90 days, and four within 50 miles…what are the odds of that? At least this time, the pilot is okay.

    diabetic special issuance

I’m type-2 and mine took about nine months from the original submission to getting my SI. That was several years ago, however.

Buying and Bringing a plane from Canada to the USA

I imported my Bonanza from Canada a few years ago. After some basic negotiating, the prior owner was kind enough to ferry it to a US airport (Bangor) where I had it inspected and we closed the deal. We used an escrow agent that’s done plenty of imports - they handled all the FAA paperwork. US...

    Handheld Radios

In your case, you don't need to transmit, so you can use just about any radio that receives the VHF aircraft band...a lot less expensive than a handheld transceiver. Something like this will do what you want for barely $100...

How often do you update your Garmin databases?

Just a comment on the 40 minute upgrades... I have a pair of GTNs and a G500, all connected with Garmin Flightstream. I download the updates to my iPad in maybe five minutes, then it’s maybe another five minutes to sync from iPad to the GTN-750 with the flightstream card in it. The 750 pushes...

Did it used to be "plan your checkride XC in 30 minutes"?

Yes, I remember the 30 minute “rule” from way back when. As I recall, I was a little nervous and took maybe 40 minutes - at which point the examiner informed me that since I was over his 30 minute limit, he could fail me right there. To boot, it was a cold (20ish) day, and don’t you know we go...

    David Clark One-X

I have both the DC and the Bose (actually, I have four pairs of Bose). I’d rate both excellent but with one difference I haven’t seen anyone mention, and that’s sound quality. I guess at my age my high frequency hearing isn’t what it used to be, and this is a bit of a problem with my Bose...

    Thoughts on maintaining two abodes

We had homes in NY and NC...best thing was that it justified keeping my Bo. We invested in a lot of home automation so we could run most of the big systems from anywhere and monitor the cameras, etc. It was always stressful in hurricanes and storms wondering if the home got flooded...

    Led wingtip strobe lights

We did this in our Bo this year...put in the system showcased in the June ABS magazine - shed a lot of power consumption and got way brighter strobes...definitely worthwhile.

    [NA]All-in-one printer purchase time again[NA]

Just to add my two cents, if you can afford the printers from Xerox, I’d recommend them highly. We have a Xerox, a Brother and an old IBM/Lexmark, and the Xerox has really been the standout in terms of print quality, cost per page, and reliability.

    cockpit management

Before anyone accuses me of being a Luddite, I want to share that I do own a software company, and there’s no bigger fan of ForeFlight than me. Still, when I did my instrument rating, I tried being totally iPad-centric, but it was hard. In turbulence under the Foggles, by the time I navigated...

    FBO Based Hangar Rent

My Bo in a shared hangar at KSUT is $375. 30 miles away at ILM, a largish private hangar I had rented was $700 - it would have been big enough for two planes. In either airport, hangars come up for sale once in a while in the $80-100K range.

    Private plane

I have a Bo and I regularly make the trip from KILM to KISP...IFR, 470nm - that’s usually a little under 3 hours and 50 gallons of 100LL. Funny, it seems like a bargain - between gas, tolls and a snack stop or two, the drive always ends up costing more (not including maintenance and fixed costs...

    1.3 Vso for final?

+1 on this. I do fly a Bo, and on an instrument approach where the MAP is a timed segment from the FAF, it’s important to keep ground speed under control. It’s easy to get sloppy if we’re relying on GPS, but I typically keep ground speed right around 90 knots until I break out, then we slow to...

Can I really afford a Bonanza / Debonair??

Yeah, it’s about MPG or dollars per mile. Per hour, my Bo is only a little less than running a 182, but since it goes maybe 40nm further in that hour, a given trip tends to be a lot less expensive in the Bo than in the 182. In fact, a 100 hour flying year in the Bo might have required 130 hours...

Can I really afford a Bonanza / Debonair??

Just to share another data point, I’m finishing up my second year of F33A ownership. My total maintenance cost has averaged $6K/year, the big ticket items all being gear related (strut reseal, seals, gear motor). I paid a premium price for a pristine aircraft: 1991 airframe with under 2000...

Landing on private property (with permission)

Not that it’s an answer to the original question, but this thread has me wondering what the process is for turning private land into a private registered airport? If I happened to own an adequate plot of land, how would I go about getting it designated a private airport?
