    Canada wildfire smoke and GA

I'm sort of surprised there's no discussion of this. What is everyone's take? Around here (KRME) the forecast for today is sky clear, visibility 3-5 miles in "mist", which is of course wildfire smoke. Beyond any safety concern, I just wonder if it's good for an air-cooled engine. Any thoughts?

Best book on commercial flight maneuvers

With winter setting in I’m getting to the academic studying/reading part of my year. Next up is the commercial rating. What books do you guys recommend on learning the commercial maneuvers?

Question on requirement to notify NTSB

Hi all, I recently came across an accident of a US-registered aircraft in the Caribbean. It was a commercial flight which blew the right main on landing, causing the aircraft to depart the runway and subsequent nosewheel collapse. There is an accident report from the Eastern Caribbean Aviation...

    Cross-country frustrations

So at my home field, I have two fields that I swear to you are 49 NM away (no matter how I look it up). Which means of course I can’t use either of them for cross-country purposes for time used to apply for a rating. This is pretty frustrating.

Getting my CSEL in a Cessna 150

Hi all, I’m in a flying club with a very nice Cherokee 180, and a solid Cessna 150. The 180 has a GTN750, dual G5s and soon, a Garmin autopilot. The 150 has the Tailbeacon ADSB out, and steam gauges. I’ve thought about getting my Commercial, and I have a friend in the same club doing it right...

    Alternate missed instructions - GTN750

Hi all, Let’s say before you begin an approach (this generally happens when you’re flying practice approaches in VMC), ATC says “missed approach instructions are climb straight ahead to 3,000, maintain VFR”. How would you deal with this using the 750 (or 650 for that matter)? When you reach the...

    Removing goggles on IR checkride

So I was doing IR checkride prep today (my ride is on Tuesday). Went up with an instrument-rated buddy sitting right seat. Went out to the practice area. We have two G5’s stacked and a GTN750 in our Cherokee. Plan was to simulate partial panel and do a partial panel approach. Failed the top G5...

Deep Thoughts about the pitot-static system

So we all know the potential issue where the pitot tube and drain hole are blocked (presumably by ice in the normal training scenario), and if you climb your airspeed will increase and if you descend, yada, yada, yada. Well I'm preparing for my instrument ride and I have this annoying need to...

    Reasonable IR checkride question?

While comparing DMEs with another pilot in my club, he mentioned some questions this guy had asked him on his IR ride. Do you guys think these are reasonable questions? - Where in the FARs does it indicate whether your airplane is FIKI certified? (DME asked, is your plane certified for known or...

    Would you bag this flight?

I have an insurance checkout today in the venerable Cessna 150. Severe clear, light surface winds, but 35 knots at 2,000 and calling for wind sheer. Aside from the fact that cars on the road will be passing me when flying into the wind, I've never really dealt with wind sheer. My instructor has...

    Applied carb heat - nada

Hey guys, Doing a runup yesterday in a Cherokee 180, mag checks fine, pulled the carb heat, nothing. No drop whatsoever in RPM. What are the potential mechanical faults? And (stupid question time) is it possible I had carb ice and that's why there was no drop? I scrubbed figuring it was...

    NYT article on unreliability breathalyzers

These Machines Can Put You in Jail. Don’t Trust Them. A million Americans a year are arrested for drunken driving, and most stops begin the same way: flashing blue lights in the rearview mirror, then a battery of tests that might include standing on one foot or reciting the alphabet. What...

    Equipment required for IFR flight

"(e) An alternate source of static pressure for the altimeter and the airspeed and vertical speed indicators;" https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/125.205 Is this the case? Somehow I never heard that. Does being able to break the face of a pitot-static instrument count? I somehow doubt it.

    IR checkride question: clock

Hi all, I know you need a clock with a second hand for IFR flight, and my understanding is that it has to be panel-mounted. Does this mean that if the panel-mounted clock is not functioning, I cannot substitute a watch or a digital timer of some kind for the checkride? In other words, without...

    Logging time (apologies in advance)

if I’m rated SEL, can I log any time I’ve spent at the controls of a MEL aircraft? I was not receiving instruction. And I apologize in advance, I know the peanut gallery hates these questions. I’m just a guy looking for a correct answer. Thanks.

Island hopping: St. Marten, St. Bart’s

Doing some island hopping with a local pilot today, including these two pretty famous airports. Will post pictures and maybe some video later. Weather should be gorgeous. This is literally a dream come true, these airports by small plane. I’m like a kid at Christmas!

    Watch for IFR

Hi guys, So you see a lot of "aviator" watches available that are clearly not for aviators. Do you have recommendations for a good watch? It's for flying IFR. The first thing it obviously needs is a stopwatch. And I prefer digital, just because I think that would be easier. I kind of like this...

    New York (KPOU) charter service?

Not sure if this would be the right forum, but I have a friend with business throughout New York (Hudson Valley, Albany area, Mohawk Valley, out to Buffalo) who is sick of driving. I was talking to him at a BBQ yesterday and he asked if I knew of any charter services. Anything you google offers...

    Was I being unreasonable?

Had kind of a weird situation today with a club plane. It needed to be flown somewhere for maintenance (prop balancing), and two owners and our pilot-rated mechanic were going to do the flight. In casual conversation a few weeks ago, one of the two owners mentioned to me that they were out of...
