    Why are aircraft radios AM?

I've been playing around with my scanner a bit and have noticed that most other VHF radio services are FM (broadcast, marine, amateur, etc). Does anyone know the history/reason why the aircraft band uses AM?

    Not flying today

KTTA 161643Z AUTO 30019G44KT 10SM SCT065 13/M03 A2965 RMK AO2 Runway heading is 030/210, so this is a direct crosswind. Local news said the FAA had ordered all outbound flights grounded. I couldn't find a NOTAM to that effect. Maybe tower is just refusing clearances.

    Selling My Plane

I'm selling my plane. Flying is really dangerous and shouldn't be undertaken by anyone. A few years ago, we had a local plane crash. It crashed within a mile of an elementary school. Though the pilot wasn't injured, it could have been a lot worse. What if he had hit the school and what if...

    Updraft causing airspeed increase?

I was flying along in some relatively bumpy conditions today and saw a phenomenon I'd never seen before. I was flying "straight and level", but suddenly my airspeed shot up about 10 knots. My engine didn't suddenly get stronger and the RPMs were in the same place. Is it possible that I hit...

    Do you have an autopilot

Does at least one of the planes you fly IFR regularly have a working autopilot? This might put the results of the previous poll into perspective.

    Hot Cargo

What is "hot cargo"? I see this all the time on taxiway diagrams.

    Charleston (SC)?

I'm planning a weekend trip with my wife and have a few questions. Is JZI the best airport choice? Hotel recommendations? Is a rental car needed? What do you do there? We went to the USS Yorktown dozens of times when I was in Boy Scouts. What else is there?

    Currency - IPC Every 6?

So, in the past week I've heard a lot of people (including my AME) suggest keeping current by getting an IPC every 6 months. While this sounds like a great idea, I wonder about letting 6 months elapse without doing any approaches. Do those of you who do this still do approaches with a safety...

    Tried on a DA-40

After years of reading about the Diamond DA-40 and thinking how it looked like the perfect plane, I got a chance to sit in one today. Unfortunately, I don't fit in it. When I close the canopy, my head presses against the ceiling. There's no way I could fit if I were wearing a headset. Dang!

    Stick or Wheel

So, if you were designing the perfect GA airplane, which would it have, a stick or a control wheel?

    Military Training Routes

OK, so I know these are depicted on the sectional chart, but it doesn't list their altitudes or width. Is there anywhere I can get this information other than by calling FSS? IR718 wraps around two sides of my new home base (TTA).

    Derating an Engine

So here's a question I've wondered about for years. I have been told that the Lycoming O-360 in my plane is derated to 180hp. There are some other planes that have a 200hp version of the O-360. How is that accomplished? What is different about the 200hp version? When I dial in the power...

Survey: Biggest Waste of Money in Aviation

So, I was fumbling through the holiday gift guide of a popular mail-order aviation supply company. It got me thinking, what's the biggest waste of money in aviation? For me it has to be the handheld radio. I bought one of these suckers after my 2nd lesson and spent enought money for 6 hours...

While we're on the subject of radio technique

Here's one that drives me nuts at uncontrolled fields: "Podunk traffic, Cessna 1234 on the ILS 5, 2.5 miles SE of BOOHOO" A perfectly accurate position report that's absolutely useless to anyone flying VFR. VFR-only pilots have no clue what you're talking about. It's also useless for IFR...

    Sticky threads

On "Flight Following", Ron Levy's post about going into the FRZ is marked "sticky". It always shows up at the top of the screen. What determines whether or not something is "sticky"? It it a setting on my end, the poster's, or a system-wide setting?

    24-month VOR check?

I had a CFII tell me that VOR receivers must be inspected by a shop every 24 months in addition to the operational check every 30 days. I can't find the regulation that backs this up.

    Losing Engine On Takeoff

Last night, I read Julie Boatman's article in this month's AOPA pilot about engine failures on takeoff. She claims that a plane in a high-angle climb will stall when power is removed. The removal of power causes the airplane to descend rather than climb. This changes the angle of the relative...
