Kirk or Picard

Someday, you too will be an old man. One day I woke up and saw this old man staring at me in the mirror. How did this happen? Why did that mirror do this to me..??

Dam kids....:lol::lol::lol:

For gaawdam sake....pull up your pants man. Wait. Uh...never mind. That's just me in the mirror.

This is the same as "which Superman is your favorite?" More of a generational thing - the Kirk fans probably saw the original in the mid60s, Picard fans are more likely to have watched ST for the first time in the TNG incarnation.

If you were a kid when the original series aired, it seems like nothing since can equal that first thrill. It's like the first DOOM. Subsequent releases may be flashier, fancier, more politically correct, more detailed, better designed, and so on, but can never quite bring you back to the experience that was the first one. Therefore for me, it will always be Kirk.

Enterprise, and Captain Archer, puts all other Star Treks and captains in the dust.

This thread is about like listening to a gaggle of old men talk about their prostates, how modern the 50s were and who died recently at their retirement home.

Soon we'll get to see the new Wonder Woman. (ain't gonna be nearly as hot as Lynda Carter)

Just look how they messed up Wilma Deering when they re-did Buck Rogers.

Okay... maybe I'm just old, but that's why I have a VCR in my office :)

When the NG first came on the air, I was ecstatic that ST was being revived.

I watched, I think, two episodes then never watched it again. Boring as hell, they took themselves way too seriously. Not fun like TOS. Lt Cmdr "Data". Really? That's the best they could come up with to replace the Spock role?

Not necessarily. I wasn't quite old enough to (be allowed to) watch TOS on first run, but I became a dedicated fan after watching reruns in the early 70s. I still voted for Picard. Why? Picard was someone I could believe might really exist in the ST universe. Kirk was a classic hero archetype/stereotype. Personally I always found Spock to be a more interesting character than Kirk.

Though of all the command rank characters in the ST universe, I think I liked Sisko best, and Riker least. But Picard was a close second, always.

Might be interesting to talk about who your favorite ST character was, at any level, not necessarily Captain. But I don't want to hijack the thread, so I'll just leave it at that.

And yet when the cameras weren't rolling, it's well documented that the TNG cast were truly off-the-wall jokesters. Many actors that ordinarily wouldn't be caught dead in SF were begging to be on TNG because it was such a fun set.

One of the DS9 cast talked recently about a gag that happened while TNG and DS9 were filming at the same time. Brooks is well-known for being very serious and committed to whatever he's working on. On the set he always referred to the actors very formally, e.g. "Mr. Dorn, Ms. Farrell, Ms. Visitor" and so on while the TNG cast were incredibly casual. According to the DS9 cast member, the entire TNG cast came over to the DS9 set, singing/dancing "Good Morning" from "Singin in the Rain", trying to "liven things up a bit". Brooks was not pleased.

The show and acting definitely got better as the seasons went on. If you ever have time or interest, try watching some of the later seasons.

Another vote for Kirk here. As a child of the mid 60's who fell in love with Star Trek after I started watching it in the mid 70's, nothing else comes close. Kirk was just THE captain. None of the others impressed me as much. My wife, who's a year older than me, feels the same. TOS is one of the few sci-fi shows that we watch together sometimes (she's not much of a sci-fi fan). A few years ago we bought the entire series on Bluray.
Spock was my all time favorite character though.

Grew up on TOS, Kirk an is amazing character, the holy trinity of Kirk, Spock and McCoy has never been surpassed. TOS has a lot of great stories that hold up today, some true Sci Fi.
TNG was a great ride too, reduced enjoyment in following series however. Most of the movies were sadly not so good. And JJ Trek is NOT Star Trek. Makes me want to puke those got made. Utter tripe. I hope the new series coming up can recapture the magic.

Heart and soul of Trek, right here....

Picard. Especially movie Picard. TV Picard leaves a little aggressiveness to be desired. But movie Picard is an undeniable bad ass.

If you picked Kirk, you're not wrong... you just have a different preference.

If you picked Archer or ANYTHING about Enterprise... you're WRONG.

And how dare anyone speak ill of Brent Spiner's Data. How DARE you. LoL

The first couple episodes of TNG are awful. Don't give up so easily. Chill out and enjoy some cellular peptide cake with mint frosting.

Picard! Followed closely by Sisko and Janeway.

I've actually never much cared for the TOS beyond the movies.

Enterprise was good until the whole craptastic Xindi story arc. I'm hoping Discovery will be good!

I'd recommend watching "Measure of A Man". That's one of the classic TNG episodes.

Data grows on you especially the non story Sherlock Holmes episodes set on the Holodeck.

Janeway

<duck>

You've got to admit, from a leadership standpoint, holding a crew together who knows their likelihood of going home before they die, is nil... would be a total beoootch.

Most would just call it a life and head for the mess hall and drink mass quantities of synthohol.

Report for duty? What you going to do? Toss us all out of the airlock?

Ah yes, Janeway. Well it was definitely cool to have a female captain, but I couldn't stand Voyager. Some of the worst episodes of Trek were in that series, and I can't think of a single one that stands out in my mind as actually good. (Lizards??? YGBFSM!!) That's probably why I forgot about her.

Let's not even talk about the idiotic reboot (so-called) by that punk schlockmeister, JJ Lensflare.

BTW, what the hell were the other 400 - thousands of crew people doing while the gallant bridge crew were having all of the life and death of the galaxy adventures? Did they even know what was going on? Did they miss the redshirts that didn't make it to the first commercial break?

How about "Scorpion"? Where Species 8472, and Seven of Nine was first introduced?

Ahh. Seven of Nine...

This is true. It took a bit for the series to come into their own.

Agreed. I grew up in the 70s. My older brother liked to watch Star Trek, but I found it boring, and couldn't stand to watch it. I really liked the TNG once it came in to its own. Picard is awesome. I always liked his calm, classy demeanor. You knew he was a bad ass, and felt no need to show it off. Unquestioned respect from those under his command. The biggest problem for me was that he seemed to be above being a mere captain. But promoting him to admiral would have ruined the show. So I cut the producers some slack for that one.

You are just now figuring this out?

Oh no - I've known for a long time. And I resemble my own remark, that's for sure!
