This seems like the aviation version of taking a hamster to the vet.

Step 1 is logging onto Barnstormers to shop for a replacement.

This, not so much. :D:D:D

Serious question:
Is a 150 with that many 'needs' economically viable?

That is my question also. Unless the recent increase in prices has changed the 150 market from when we sold ours a few years back.
Part it out or overhaul the motor and do the minimum required to make it a working airplane / legal trainer.

It NEEDS an overhaul.

paint and interior likely a choice.

At one time 150s came from factory with bare metal and only

a trim stripe.

Very Spartan interior.

Somehow they flew.

I’ve done a few “ quick n dirty” touch ups.

Wing: Leading edge. - Sand , prime n repaint Spar forward

Underside doesn’t deteriorate and you can’ see the top.

Cowling n struts repaint

Fuselage - Redo Trim paint using existing scheme.

If you dont like the look then step back a few feet!

Note no action on Control Surfaces.

These are Balanced.

These tasks may be done as Preventative Maintenance by the

Owner with a PPL; “ Apply Decorative Coatings”.

Use the $$. at the gas pump.

I’m aware he is and believe we both Remember

“Whistlestop”.

My impression was he was evaluating the 150 as a Prebuy.

Poor paint and interior can drive down resale value

but may still be a great value.

I often deal with folks wanting fixer uppers for eventual

flying.

A “ needs paint” aircraft seems a good way to go as opposed

to one needing structural repairs.

Not all can get “Kitchen Clearance “ on purchasing.

Engine...

avionics- nope vfr, an iPad and ya could really survive w a string taped to the cowl for avionics... paint and interior - chip away at if ya like doing that stuff in between annuals. . I did my whole interior on the c140 for $500 w all new upholstery and such for $500 maybe- it’s all fresh, Spartan but fresh, and hell non-Spartan fixtures are just dead weight.

dont scrap a single one that doesn’t have to be, our fleet is shrinking daily. There’s far more to aircraft than it being financially logical...

My $0.02

The late model 150s had plastic interior, and these are expensive.

Pull interior, about $1000
Avionics, minimalist =$2500 transponder, $1000. radio
Glass, front and back -$2500.
New interior
Paint $10,000- $15.000
engine $20,000 - $25,000
.
low end about $26,000

Those same plastic parts today are like potato chips.

Can be repaired but lots of hours.

One of the best I've seen was covered with a double knit fabric, looked really nice

You could "go big" and have the only G-1000 C150 out there! Haha.

If it were me ( and it's not ).

Pull engine. Field OH. Replace.
repaint.
replace glass.
pull interior and replace.
Finish avionics.
Place 4-Sale sign.

I bet a c 150 would look good with a naked interior- all cleaned and painted...

Spend the money on the engine. That's what keeps it in the air. I like the idea of tossing the interior as that may save a bit of weight too ...

Would that be legal?

interesting question. At first I thought, well of course, but then got thinking I have no specific knowledge to back up that claim.

I did it on my c140 and all the people I’ve showed it off to not one has brought up if I was allowed to have done that... Including my IA... But that’s all I can offer... So now ya got my mind going a bit ...

Is front and back only really that much nowadays? I’m talking parts only. Labor is free in your case right? I replaced all glass (front, back, and sides) in a Cessna years ago. Parts alone seemed very reasonable. Took a whole weekend to install. It still looks great!

IMHO - got to do the engine.

Then, next question is what do you want to do with this? Fly it / keep it?

1) avionics - Got to have ADSB, radio. Do you want this IFR as well? Does it have at least one Nav Com? Bite the bullet and GNX 375
2) glass - If it's really, really bad - got to see out of the plane
3) Paint and interior come last.

If you want to flip this / sell it, then after the engine flip the order of the three items directly above. If you're selling / flipping, you make your money on the buy, not the sell. You need to get this for next to nothing.
