What did you do today?

Put snow and ice shield on dad's roof.

Did a 3-hour session in the RealSimGear Vision Jet simulator with CFI Jake Strong of Vectored Approach in Austin Texas. As close to flying a jet as I’m likely to get, and well worth the time and money. Now back to flying a Vision Jet in MSFS 2024 on my own table top computer back at home.

The one at Galesburg IL? Nice! I fly there quite a bit to use their courtesy cars and go to an ice cream shop in town. Very much like that airport.
Actually this is at The National Museum of the USAF on Wright-Patterson AFB.

Got to watch a master welder fix the seat bracket on a motorcycle I am restoring. Special thanks to @Racerx for helping me out, very much appreciated!
Glad I could help. But jinxed myself talking about my 1947 Cincinnati shear. Had to repair the air valve later today.

Went out to dinner and had 3 very strong old fashioned's celebrating #37

Today, I... finally caught up on this thread!

My wife doesn't let me got on ladders anymore. If I have some work to do up high, I have to do it when she's gone
Thus making it *extra* safe!:biggrin:

Failed to land a trout I hooked. I @%$^& hate !$#@&!! barbless hooks!
Barbless hooks? That's a thing? Why? :dunno:

Pressure washed the driveway. Two days ago I pressure washed the patio, which is pavers. But not to worry, it’s Florida and it’s summer so they’ll be turning black again within six months.

The worst decision I’ve ever made on a house was getting talked into pavers for a patio in Florida.
Pavers suck in every state. I've practically given up on keeping them looking nice. To keep them looking nice I need to fully pressure wash and re-sand twice a year, plus do roughly biweekly maintenance to keep weeds from growing up through there. To be fair, I suspect they were, ahem, not professionally done. The prior owner of my house thought he was a handyman. He was mistaken.

Today I was happy to see a rabbit has moved in and is eating the weeds at least. :(

Just brake pads but that’s because I come in full throttle then slam on the brakes and hopefully stop before the end of the runway. You know, a normal mooney Cirrus landing.
FTFY.

I'm kinda glad I have speed brakes. I only rarely use them in the air, but I pop them immediately upon touchdown. They give a little bit of aero braking but the larger effect is to blank out the lift on about 1/6 of the wing, putting more weight on the wheels. Combined with long runways and controlled approach speeds, I rarely use the brakes... But that's because after the first time I paid for a set of brakes I decided I didn't want to do that again. Hell, I taxi with a bucket popped in the jet because those suckers are (way more) expensive too!

And since there's been a lot of todays since I read this thread, on some of them, I:

* Hit 3,000 hours total time
* Hit 100 hours in the Hawker and started flying it from the left seat sometimes
* Spent 7 days in May AOG because I got a job flying old British designed jets.

I'm learning a lot.

Barbless hooks? That's a thing? Why?

Some fishing locations are catch & release only, and many of those require the use of barbless hooks to make it easier to release the fish without injury. A couple of years ago I fished some waters out west like that, and I still have quite a few flies without barbs in my fly boxes. I happened to be using some on the Toccoa even though it wasn’t required.

Unfortunately such flies also make it easier for a trout to perform a self-release at long distance.

My dad's pond next door is barbless only. I refuse to fish it if he's going to enforce that. I think that's his plan for keeping me out of it.

He stocks it every year with 25 rainbows. It's a strict keep every one you catch policy. Which would be easier without barbless hooks.

Dug into a ****ed off hive looking for the queen. She's an old girl and they've gotten hot. Went through every frame 4 times. Can usually spot them within a few minutes. Finally found her after 45 minutes. Put her in a nuc to manage her better and use as a resource hive.

One hive didn't make the winter but il eft it out. Apparently I had taken some good frames out of it and forgot. Caught a swarm in last Saturday. They built all this since then.IMG_4033.jpeg

The barbless also fall out of the foam in flyboxes and you end up with all your flies floating around waiting to fall out of the box when you open it. I’ve just stuck with barbed and pinch the barb down with forceps when it’s barbless only waters.

Others have answered the question for their areas.

Up here in the far-left corner of the contiguous lower 48, we have fresh and salt water fishing. Salmon is certainly the most popular. It is HIGHLY regulated for the sake of the fishery and for Native American treaties. There are times when all species of salmon are migrating in at the same time and yet only a single species' season is open. There are often also size limits on salmon and other fish (e.g. sturgeon). If you catch a non-season salmon or undersize fish, a barbless hook does little harm when thrown back.

The Washington State fishing booklet is over 150 pages!

Couple of unrelated things enjoyed today.

Put about 100+ total rounds thru a couple of my pistols, Ruger SR and S&W M&P.

Stopped by Red Stewart Airfield.
Setup some Champ refresher flying and watched a Student handle a ~7 Knot crosswind in a J-3.

Took the RV-6 out before work this morning. Pulled a prop contrail most of the length of the runway on takeoff. Pretty neat flying through that <apparent> tunnel. Did a little acro, dropped by a neighboring field for some gas, and headed back to the home field. When I got there, the pattern was littered with training traffic. On downwind, one of the 172's was a half mile behind me. It was just touching down as I shut down the RV in front of my hangar. Those guys used ALL the pattern...

That is a nice airfield that I enjoy hanging out there for a while. I don't do it often enough.
During a stage check during training, the chief flight instructor had me show him that I could Direct to Red Stewart on the 530.
After flying right over the airfield and missing it. He had me land there 3 times, my first ever grass landings early in my training.

Moved the airplane to a more secure hangar for the summer( hurricane) season.

FACIT flight. F-around And Call It Training flight :p Laconia NH to Brunswick ME to Portland ME to Portsmouth NH and home. First time really out and about with the Cirrus just having fun.

Found out my airfield will cease flying ops in 3 weeks. Land owner has liability issues. Hopefully I have a short term option lined up.
Damn that's short notice. That sucks!

Any chance of putting together a group to buy the field?

Also, what's the perceived liability if it is appropriate to ask?

Too bad. They’ve made a lot of improvements the last couple years. Hopefully he can work it out.

No. It's in the path of commercial development and fronts a high traffic road. It will sell for tens of millions of dollars in a few years.

The situation is moving fast. The guy who operates the airfield is looking at some property for sale nearby. Might turn into an even better situation if the regulatory side can be navigated.

Any chance you could get a shelter over @ Manatee? They still haven't rebuilt some of shelters destroyed the hurricane so there's space.

That's my short term plan, but I need to get over there quick and make arrangements.

I can understand closing the airport for flights ops, but forbidding you access to your plane and hangar property is a seizure of personal property, perhaps theft. How is that legal?
