What did you do today?

Today (OK, last night late) I determined that the outside unit of our heat pump is TU. THe 50A breaker in the panel was popped, which has never happened before. I shut everything off, waited a few minutes, reset the breaker, and turned the system back on. Went outside to check the outside unit... nothing. No movement, no sound. Oh, great. After a couple minutes I headed back inside to shut it off. As I was reaching for the back door, I caught a bright flash of light and heard a loud POP! (or was it a BANG?) from the heat pump. I didn't have to shut the breaker off, it was already done for me. How convenient.

Sigh. On a Saturday night, of course, the day after we just bought a new (to us) car. And not a cheap one, either. This will be fun. I may need to burn my hotel points this week.

Flew to JVL for breakfast. Went to C89 for the cheapest gas around at 5.56. 2200x38' runway might be the shortest one for me personally. Called my aunt as my uncle apparently has a BD4 and an apache hangared there, and my sister needed to use the bathroom inside the locked fbo. I absolutely was not expecting the fbo to be that glorious. Gobsmacked. I almost felt bad taking a dump.

I did meet my uncle who I hadn't seen in probably 20 years. He was working on someone's Ercoupe. The Apache is allegedly in a million pieces. I still didn't see it or the BD. But if I did see the BD, I'd have been blinded by it's ugliness. So probably for the better.

Sylvania had a "flying club" that built out that insanely nice facility and had super nice airplanes at wildly unsustainable prices. Sadly but predictably, it didn't last long.

It's one of the nicest airport terminals anywhere, including the expensive Signature/Atlantic places at fancy mountain airports and such. Someone definitely burned someone's money.

Prob a capacitor. Easy fix
Mebbe. Something let out a big bang last night. I don't have any parts on hand, so I wasn't going to tear into it - for a change.

I was going to replace this system anyway, but not this summer. I won't go into detail, but we hit my wife's medical insurance out-of-pocket max a couple months ago, and brought home a new car Friday afternoon. The tech just showed up and yes, the compressor is toast.

What joy. Tomorrow I get to see about a new system for one of our rental houses, too.

I declared to my employer a week ago that I was done with living in the bay area. Only made it out here for 3 months before pulling the plug. Beautiful area, lots of good people -- but definitely not the place I'm setting up shop long term.

I expected to get fired with that announcement, *shrug*. But didn't. Gonna work remote. Found that out today.

Next week I'll fly on back to IL... And I plan to fly the **** out of the arrow, which has been idle (aside for the RR flyin).

Welcome back!

Today I decided I need to fly more. Other flying is starting to dry up and I'm getting stir crazy!

Somebody should organize a Midwest poa get together or something.

In other news, I put time in on the RV for the first time in a month.

Made 4 lbs of meatballs.

Removed a shelf bracket in the garage. It had been there since the garage was put up, I'm pretty sure, so mid 1950's. Remove paint from screw head - check. Attempt to remove slotted screw with screwdriver - not happening. Rusted screw, in place 70 years, no. Grab screw head from within stamped recess in high quality bracket that's the same age as the screw? Not without tearing up the drywall. Ok, drill screw and try to extract - check. Extractor breaks screw off just below surface - pretty much as expected. But, bracket now gone, and what's left is below the surface of the drywall. That's a problem for the next guy, 70 years from now.

The meatballs were easier, but now I can put up new brackets to hold 2 ladders, rather than 1.

just don't forget where that broken screw is (so you don't try to put a new screw into the same place without removing what's left of the broken screw) (did that make any sense?)

So did the Oakland As. You could always follow them to Vegas.

Watching Bob Costas call a white Sox game with Steve Stone. The Sox have an 80's broadcast going on and it's fantastic. Complete with 80's commercials. Wendy's "where's the beef"

Watched a couple guys install our new AC and furnace. The rental house issue was just a capacitor, that was quick and cheap. Ours... compressor self-destructed.

Interesting that when we had the last system installed, everyone agreed that heat pumps were The Answer(tm) and you really wanted a high efficiency furnace. Now 3/3 companies told me that nobody installs heat pumps now unless I really insist, but they all recommend strongly against it, and none recommended a high efficiency furnace. All I know is, the new system is a lot quieter and it's nice to have the house under 85 degrees again.

What are the reasons for not installing heat pumps? Is this a regional thing?

Expensive, noisy, short operational life compared to an A/C. Apparently none of that applies to inverter heat pumps, but those have their own drawbacks - more complex, more electronics to fail, more maintenance sensitive, and substantially more expensive. Around here you do need a heat source other than the heat pump, as we do get seriously cold winters. I don't know how regional it is, but at least here natural gas is cheap enough that installers have mostly backed away from th 90-96% efficiency furnaces for similar reasons - cost, blower noise, complexity.

I will say that the new AC is much quieter than the heat pump ever was. The furnace has a variable speed blower and also runs quieter.

More in line with what we will do this summer.

The wife and I will start moving into our new to us house. And getting our current house ready to sell.

After 18 years of no A/C, this house has A/C for summer and a pellet stove for winter. A winters worth of pellets cost about the same as one month of propane, and keeps the house warmer.

Buddy called and said he had a big tree get hit by lightning. I've got the chainsaw with a 25" bar and he knows I'll help. Half rotten and struck by lightning. What could go wrong?

The cat is a big help making the tree go where you want it. Then you can pop the stump out as well.

The cat is a little tired. But he keeps it around for when his Deere is on a job. His new neighbor is a tree guy. He wanted to carefully limb it with ropes and pulleys. Buddies response "why tf would we do that?!"

I made it.
That's great, because the in laws didn't make it (diverted to DTWSDF) AND the charter plane didn't make it (diverted to Chicago, was supposed to go to Wisconsin)

After days of initial prep and trying to figure out the instructions, I tossed the exhaust hood installation manual and and going by logic and intuition.

As Oat Willie said, "Onward, through the fog!"

Replaced the flashtube in my plane’s tail beacon. Updated the AD list in prep for the annual later this month.

Replaced the mags and plug leads on the tractor. Running much better now.

Planning to go out to dinner with SWMBO this evening to celebrate our 33rd anniversary. It was actually yesterday, but we had to put our cat down yesterday and we didn’t feel much like celebrating.

Relocated my aircraft to my new home field at 48X.

Going to a shade hanger is going to take some adjustment.

As I recall, there were several planes on the field that weren’t in flying condition. Has everyone been able to relocate somehow?
