What did you do today?

Spent last night sleeping in a canvas tent with torrential rain and wicked thunderstorms with a couple lightning strikes too close for comfort. Went out this morning dry. But then right when we get on a herd the skies open up. Called a little satellite bull within 25 yards broadside. Normally wouldn't be interested, but it's rained every morning and evening. And I'm a meat hunter first and foremost. Plus it's still a feat to harvest one of these creatures with a bow solo (dad was with, but I do all the calling).

Got my tailwheel pollywog performing wheel landings in an 8kt crosswind in the Champ. An 800ft ceiling was perfect for low and slow pattern work, and spurred discussion on cloud clearance requirements, airspace, ADM etc. We did 1.2 hours of ground and he earned a flight review endorsement (my first given.)

Family reunion in Cincinnati today with brothers and sister and spouses/significant others and most of our kids and a few grandkids from Louisiana, California, Ohio, Kentucky. Everybody was happy LSU lost, including three LSU grads. Cincinnati and Miami (OH) game was not discussed much as there were split loyalties.

Good people and Good-times.

Nah, try driving across Texas
Just arrived to my TX house. 8 days of driving from Alaska. Nevada was the worst day, for sure. Hundreds of miles of nothing on a 2-lane highway with hundreds of semis and no passing lanes. Yippee. I was quite happy to get to Texas. Good roads and everyone drives faster than the speed limit.

Went looking for a runway.

(found it, btw…)

I had ONE car that would make highway stretches like that bearable. It would effortlessly pass a semi in a matter of a few seconds, without breaking a sweat or waking up a sleeping passenger. Anything else makes it a real drag.

Yesterday I finished the exhaust hood installation over the range.

Celebrated the 37th anniversary of my private checkride.

I'm also reminded that it's coincidentally my 41st wedding anniversary.

Nauga,
who always remembers
Did the former remind you of the latter or vice versa?

Pleading the 5th is acceptable

Drove to Chama to get ice, dump some garbage, and make some calls.

Nobody answered. I'm starting to think it's me.

Issued a tailwheel endorsement to my pupil, and then ferried a Quicksilver Sport 2S about forty miles. Hopscotched between cornfields with visions of scored snowmobile jugs dancing in my head. Thing was a lot of work to fly. Would not recommend.

After painting last week, got the new landing gear installed on the Parrakeet. A few more things to button up and it'll be ready to complete the condition inspection (annual) next week.

Picked up after bears came into camp and made a mess of the cook tent. They came in while we were out last night. Heard them while we were sleeping and went out with a spotlight to see a sow and cub run away. They came back while we were out this morning.IMG_4820.jpegIMG_4817.jpeg

So when does bear season open?

Bears are a big story in the mountain West right now. The dry summer has led to them aggressively foraging in populated areas to fatten up for winter. In Aspen and Vail it is not uncommon to run across bears wandering around town. There have been something like 250 bear "attacks" in Colorado this fall, though all have been minor.

Not surprised. They were becoming a problem when I was in Dubois a couple of years ago.

So when does bear season open?
Tomorrow... Well, technically it's already open for archery. I usually get a tag as they're OTC but with tanks dry chose not to. Bear archery season you can't use dogs or bait. Bear gun season you can use dogs. Beautiful color phase black bears out here.

I know an outfitter locally who runs dogs on bear and mountain lion.

My youngest texted me pics this morning of the bear he shot out of a tree. Even video. He and buddy are out with a guide. They’re using a lever action .44 mag with a suppressor.

What about using tents and trucks?
:)
The tent didn't work. They came back as we were breaking camp down. The first non color phase black bears I've seen out here. Picked up the euro mount and my meat.

We were camping and bicycling in Carbondale and Dillon a few weeks back, luckily no bear sightings.

did the ol' "batten down the hatches" with the ohmygodit'sanortheasterarmageddon bearing down on new england

(I'm not on the coast, so it won't impact us landlubbers inland)

Took the motorcycle out for the first time in a couple of months. “Uh, let’s see: throttle and brakes are on the right, clutch and shifter on the left, counter-steer to initiate a turn,...”

I really need to take the plane up soon.

Went to our weekly airport BBQ where we discussed the loss of a local pilot and found that another local pilot is leading the recovery since apparently the government is useless.
Then went for my own flight to see if I remembered how as it's been three weeks since I last flew.
Also, they're working on the Tillamook blimp hangar, this is the not-broken side.

Did my first guiding up a steep local peak (5hrs, arduous, plenty of exposure but not a technical climb).
I’m calling it successful b/c no ambulance or rescue teams were needed
