What did you do today?

Whelp. Was leaving cruise night when a couple of cars were stopped on main street. An accident. Me and dad get out to people just standing around. Male teen is laying in the street. Went up to see if we could help as nobody else was. Exercise in futility. Dead. Looks like he was crossing the street or riding on it with an ebike. A truly haunting site.
Sad

Visit with kidney doctor in the morning. No change.
Stopped at KIA dealership. Shopping for replacement car following T-Bone accident that hospitalized me. Been driving a friend's car for a month, but he needs it back next month, so I have to get my own. Found a 2022 Kia Soul that looks interesting. Brought Hubby back in the afternoon to check it out and he thinks it seems OK. Dinner at new-for-us Indonesian restaurant, hosted by owner who treated us like visiting royalty. Early to bed.

Welcome back! I’ve always appreciated your posts over the years.

Kia Soul can be a fun car. Wishing you luck in your car search.

Survived day 1 of San Diego Comic-Con 2026. The con itself was a sweaty soup of humanity but the outside events were far less crowded and we were able to do more than we expected. Got a pic of Jack (of In The Box fame) that's on par with scary Ronald, if slightly less threatening. Might make an appearance here, might not. Discussed whether a temporary Space Ghost tattoo was an appropriate fashion statement. We'll see.

Drove home from Oshkosh. Interesting comparing mogas prices along the way. Illinois most expensive, followed by Ohio and then Wisconsin and Indiana the cheapest by almost 30¢.

Indiana suspended the state tax on mogas shortly after the chaos started. It’ll go up 17-ish cents when that kicks back in.

Took on my second tailwheel student - a friend and fellow CFI. Both pupils are adjusting to the fact that the Champ hasn't had even a modicum of its adverse yaw engineered away. I'm starting to get my sea legs. :vomit:

Bought new aluminum gear legs for my Super D. 10 AMU. The old steel ones are flimsy and cause a lot of prop strikes.
Yesterday I finished welding up the new LH gear for my Parrakeet. Now to do it all over for the RH side... but it's costing me maybe a tenth as much.

Today: Paddled the canoe down to the bridge between our lake and the second lake. Spent a half hour clearing the beaver dam under the bridge enough so I could barely scrape through. Paddled to the third lake bridge, which was also blocked. Paddled back home. Got enough scratches in my newly restored canoe that the "new" has worn off so I no longer feel I have to baby it, which is a relief.

Back at the cabin, finished rough shaping a new paddle I'm making from an ash tree cut down near the cabin. I love being retired.

Pulled the final parts

Washington State just raised its mogas and avgas taxes. The legislature is trying to fill a deficit caused by their decades of flagrant, wasteful spending. Mogas taxes 56.5 cents/gal (01 July 2026). AvGas 25 cents/gal (01 Nov 2026).

Took the plane up for a little while this morning and did a few T&Gs. All landings were good, unlike a couple of days ago when they were terrible and I gave up after the second bounce+go-around. At least I'm inconsistent.
"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

I had planned to fly for a couple of hours this morning and departed the pattern to the north, but after about 45 minutes low clouds were building and I headed back. When I took off, AWOS was clear and 10, and the local TAFs were forecasting clouds over 20k. HAH! KGIF's AWOS was still saying clear sky when I got back to the pattern, and by the time I put the plane in the hangar it was giving a ceiling at 1900'.

Forecasts have been terrible around here lately, much worse than usual.

We planned to fly over to Sebring for lunch, but the cells were already building up in your area by then. We headed west instead and checked out the Skyway Bridge.

It's often tough to plan a trip around here in the summer, but it has seemed worse this year. You can almost always get out early in the morning, but getting back in becomes difficult. This morning was nice and clear at 7am, but by 9-ish Winter Haven had gone IFR.

Tampa Bay Skyway Bridge tour. Hundreds of boats on the sandbars in the mouth of the bay. Bravo floor is 1200. I confess to being a bit nervous toodleing over open water at 800 AGL/MSL. "What's that noise?"

Today was Test flight after almost 3 months working on AC system (all with proper A&P oversight and sign offs). Ended up replacing hydraulic pump, hydraulic motor, receiver/dryer and AC compressor. Used the opportunity to clean the condenser and two evaporator coils. Picture shows result on this 90 dF high humidity Atlanta day. After dozens of hours of work and frustration and too many AMUs I am happy.

Bought a garbage can shelter from Costco. Then a 150 gallon fuel tank and 12v pump setup. Assembled the shed, built a skid, and attached them. Painted the tank, wired up a 12v LiFePo battery and 50w solar charger, and drove a ground rod. Not perfectly secure but good enough for my gated airpark, and I can pick it up and stow it in the hangar or my connex if I choose to. 150 gallons will hurt a lot less to fill than my old 500 gallon tank, even if I have to do it more often!

Where did you get the tank?
Local tank manufacturer. I painted it in the driveway with polyfiber epoxy and aerothane, because I had it in the hangar. Pump and accessories from Amazon.

Left work early to drive to Bowling Green to pick up dad's Z06. Wasn't liking the enroute forecast

Argued with three different places about a missing code on an order for a blood test that resulted in a denial of a claim. It may be fixed now so I don’t have to repeat this post tomorrow and tomorrow and …………..

Freightliner repair: Piece of silicone hose near the bottom of the cooling system burst yesterday and it lost ~6-8 gallons. Driver didn't pull over until the red 'Stop Engine' light came on and the truck turned itself off. Good feature, somewhat employee-proof truck. I patched up the hose on the roadside and topped it off with water to get it back to the farm. When he got back to the dock, it was gushing coolant out the front of the engine. I think he roached the water pump by running it dry. Couldn't source a pump on Sunday night, so I got it this morning, installed it, and still got him shoved off at a reasonable time to hit his deadlines.

Kenworth repair: It lost some piece of aluminum sheet that was part of the fan shroud baffle. Metal went through the fan and radiator. Ordered the correct radiator and incorrect fan a few days ago. Located a correct fan in Fargo, was tempted to fly up there and retrieve it but opted for truck freight since it isn't being dispatched again until Thursday. Got all the old broken junk removed today.

Rental truck hasn't tossed another Thermo King belt yet. Our third and final truck (Hino 195) is sitting at the dealership awaiting a new DPF.

I hope somebody brings a short-haul/regional electric truck to market so I can just turn in a lease every couple years and be done with all of this.

Learned that a dear college buddy (and a groomsman in my wedding) is having major surgery next week for oral cancer. They'll be removing the entire inside of his cheek and then doing a skin graft with donor tissue from his wrist and thigh. He will have a tracheotomy and a feeding tube for about three weeks, and will likely need six weeks of radiation.

Damn.
