What did you do today?

I'm going to need a picture of this monstrosity...

Old photos. It's due for some rust remediation and a Martini rally livery now.

I never felt bad about dumping resources into the engine; I figured a hot 1.9L ALH could find a home in a Tacoma or MR2 Spyder eventually.

I always wondered what Herbie did after he retired from road racing......

Consolidated some parts from one hangar to one closer to home. At one time, I had four hangars plus a storage unit scattered around west central Ohio. Now down to three hangars, no storage and eventually just two hangars when I get back from Oshkosh. Enough for the Ercoupe, Aerolite 103 and Merlin repair project.

I needed to get my #### together and things are getting better

so, you are the one hoarding hangars...

Last couple of weeks I traded in some skin cancer for some cool scars. Today the pathology came back that shows it should be a non issue for my medical at the end of the month.

Don’t do like I did. Use sunscreen and get checked regularly.

The plan was to spend today working on the new landing gear for my plane before heading back to the cabin and I started welding on the first of three gusset plates this morning but it was just too damn hot, my goggles were fogging up and there were literally puddles of dripped sweat on the fixture. I gave up, shut off the torch, drank a couple quarts of water, and drove back to the cabin where I'm now sitting by the lake looking at the weird yellow sky from the Canadian wildfire smoke. Next week it should be cooler so maybe then I'll get the left side done so I can start all over on the right.

Playing with a welding torch in 90°+ weather is not fun!

I do it all summer. Put on a full leather jacket and sweat. Suck it up buttercup

That license plate isn't structural is it?

Have to reinforce some bar joists to put some stuff on the roof of a convenience store. Engineer wants me to anchor one side into cmu. Only problem is there's no cmu on any part of the building. So I didn't do anything today. But somebody got billed for me to do nothingIMG_4343.jpeg

Glad you caught it and got it taken care of.

Lots of folks are hitting OSH. If that’s you, they sell lightweight sun block shirts. And hats. And sun block. Be safe!

Flew 12.6 hours on an IFR flight plan with no autopilot, some of it in mountain wave. Didn't see the Bluetooth logo on the audio panel until I was about three hours in. Batteries died in my ANR box around that same time. Performed a takeoff with full fuel at 8600ft density altitude in Wyoming. Shot an approach back home in wildfire smoke.

Enjoyable day. Wish I'd had a faster airplane available to use, though.

FU

What were you flying?

Got some new meats on the buggy. White letters out, of course. :happydance:

It seems like it's using a little coolant. I hope it's just a head gasket and not cracked metal - I put in a considerable amount of quality time with my die grinder porting this head. Might be able to sneak a borescope through an injector port and see if one hole appears steam-cleaned. The car has a big turbo from a V6 Audi and it's been taking about 40 psi of boost, so I wouldn't be surprised if it lifted the head despite having ARP studs.

I got the AC working so well I can see my breath and it's fogging the windows. Still gotta address a bad wheel bearing, bad ABS wheel speed sensor, cracked windshield (with a rusty pinchweld frame,) and worn out engine mounts. I could buy a new car, but I don't know what I'd do with all my free time.

Tires look cool! A shot in the dark on this one, but maybe in it's heart it wants to be air-cooled?

Sorry. It's been one of those weeks...

We have that exact tile in our main bath. You're right, it's not a lot of fun to grout.

Did the rear drum brakes and lines on the 52 F1. It’s been maybe 40 years since I’ve done drums and the guy who invented them should be glad he’s dead or I’d kill him with a wide variety of specialized tools I have for doing drum brakes. The new discs on the front on the other hand were a piece of cake to put on.

Sold one hangar house and bought a different one last month. Today? Dug 350’ of french drain with a rented mini ex. Laid filter fabric, drain pipe, 70 yards of rock fill, all in a steady rain. Trying to get ahead of 12,000 square feet of paving on the driveway and ramp. If it ever stops raining!

My 2012 GMC has drums. They were so worn I couldnt reach the adjusters with a spoon in to back them off. The old Legends cars had drums so I wasn't totally clueless. Ended up swapping the whole rear end.

Will be doing something similar next weekend. Tying into a septic field I put in when I built my house that the county doesn't know about. The old clay tile is failing... wherever it actually is.

Drove 150 miles round trip to retrieve a compressor drive belt for a rental truck's Thermo King reefer. We're running a rental because two of our box trucks are down for maintenance. Gonna send Koch NationaLease an invoice for my miles and labor.

Managed to get my guy out on his delivery route at a workable time despite the setback - to picky eaters' dismay, the twin cities will remain well stocked with mushrooms.

Went on a spending spree. Personal and business. Bought myself a new bow for the first time since 2009 for the annual elk hunt. Only 1.5 amu's and still need a quiver, sight, and rest. Then helped keep the lights on for @NealRomeoGolf and ordered some saw blades.

Which bow?

Wasn’t expecting that, nice bow, glad you didn’t follow the herd.
Lol. And what does the herd shoot?

Have shot Elite since I got my last one. I like how they feel and shoot. So many feel top heavy. Plus I like going off the beaten path a bit. Got my buddy hooked and he bought an Elite impulse. Plus their hunt guarantee is pretty awesome. You break it on a hunt, they'll overnight you a hunt ready bow free of charge to finish the hunt out. Never used it. But pretty cool.

I have been shooting since the early 80’s. I have shot them all, switched to Mathew’s (the herd bow of choice) in the early 2000’s and it makes a bad shooter look good. I shot a solocam from 2006 until 2 years ago, I now have the Lift 33X, it almost shoots itself, feels like cheating.

Personal preference. I never liked how a Mathews felt. To me. I was looking for the shortest axle to axle and less than 4lbs with 70lb limbs. Hiking the mountains through scrub oak with a 35" bow sucks.

They all kill em just as dead.

Whelp. Was leaving cruise night when a couple of cars were stopped on main street. An accident. Me and dad get out to people just standing around. Male teen is laying in the street. Went up to see if we could help as nobody else was. Exercise in futility. Dead. Looks like he was crossing the street or riding on it with an ebike. A truly haunting site.
