Back in May of 2009 I flew to Florida and picked up an airplane.

Today, I signed an 8050-2 form. That's the FAA Bill of Sale for those not in the know of all the form numbers. I didn't really feel like being watched by everyone and their brother who builds an ADS-B monitor and have it be known when I'm not home. I really don't care about the FAA knowing, but when anyone and everyone can see what I'm doing and there's no way to hide myself from view I decided that it was time to let it go and not be an owner anymore.

I doubt I will be looking for a new airplane anytime soon.

What are you going to do with all that extra money that will not be leaving your checking account now?

You could have had your cake and ate it too. Kept the airplane and not equipped. But I don't blame you, there are times when I wonder if all the money is worth the fun.

WOW Ed! That's a huge change! I'm sorry to hear of the sale, are you giving up flying in total, or just looking for a more private way of traveling? Understand your point of potentially being "tracked" at all times, although I'm not convinced it is as bad as you think.

Who really cares if somebody can see you. If that is your excuse to quit owning an airplane that is absolutely ...

That’s pretty sad, selling your plane just because of ads-b. There’s so many ways people can track when your not home. I mean someone can see where you were when you made this post.

Okay, so we have to equip with ADS-B if we fly into airspace where a transponder is required now. I've read the requirements (a few months ago, so things may have changed). I see that if you have ADS-B Out, you have to have it on anytime you're flying. You're not allowed to turn it off.

What I haven't seen is anything saying we have to broadcast our N-number. Is that a requirement? I like having ADS-B In. Like a lot of people, I hated the idea of being forced to add it, but I've grown to love it. That being said, I like seeing another airplane flying directly toward me, but I don't care who it is or what your N-number is.

I bought the plane to travel. I often went into/through airspace requiring ADS-B. If it were a Cub or something. It would be different.

I don't do facebook, twitter, etc.. Other than this, I almost don't exist.

Canada gets overflown. 1090 required there.

    I do.

If they know me they can. But not anyone and everyone. Yeah, they could see I made it from a certain IP address. Which isn't my actual physical location when you look it up.

I'll send you a picture of the BOS.

Yes, you do have to broadcast your N-number. Exceptions are when you are a lifeguard flight or compassion flight. But if filed, it has to match what's filed.

Been off the pain pills for a while.

Yes, it sucks, but there is a compromised path...

Keep your 978 UAT Mode C Transponder
Install a corresponding ADS-B out with 1200 anonymous mode capability
Transfer plane to LLC to shield personal info from casual lookie-loos.

Limitations -- sub 18K altitude only. Canada and Mexico are out. Flight services expose N-number, but not personal info.

I can't imagine the uproar if auto plates were treated this way.

Google doesn't tell the world that MacFlier is two states away this week and his house is either empty or occupied only by his spouse.

Any knucklehead with an internet connection can do that with ADS-B.

The mandate didn't happen to coincide with another run at the 1000hr gear AD now would it? I keed I keed.

Out of flying completely or just the ownership game?

Hahahaha. No, There's like 500 some hours left on that.

I am no longer the owner. I have a couple students, maybe 1 or 2 more on deck, and have access to 2 aircraft.

well I can respect your personal choice... but giving up a plane for ADSB? I cant wrap my head around it, in any case it doesn't matter... as long as you are happy with the decision

Ya know, at first I thought how silly is this. But I moved out of Hamilton County, Ohio [Cincinnati] because the voters OK'd a tax to pay for two stadiums. So maybe not so crazy.

Can't remember the exact quote, I keep thinking it's either from Clarke or Asimov...something about if you want to keep your privacy, just be boring.

I'm also reminded of a comment many years ago about the infamous Echelon system that monitors electronic communications....the quantity is so massive and overwhelming that neither the US nor Russia's version has enough people (or computer processing power) to really make it invasive at the level of the unwashed masses. (meaning 99.99% of the population that is just going about its business)

I don't think my addiction to flying could be curtailed by an ADS-B thing.

I give your rant a 4.5 outta 5 overall because of good follow through.

You know plate readers are tracking where you drive your car. Might want to consider a bicycle instead.
