I came across a symbol I've never seen before. The Newark, NJ airport, KEWR has me baffled.

There are several runways which intersect at an acute angle. The Terminal C complex is across the facility from the vertex of the runways. There are taxiways that surround the tarmac around the gates in a series of concentric arcs. Between those taxi ways and the runways is an item labelled "BALL PARK." That can't be what it says. There is no way to access it without crossing runways and/or taxiways. What is it? Does it have some historical importance that warrants preservation? Is it a sacred burial site for MLB teams? What is the explanation. Do we need the TERPS Elf to explain it?

Not a TERPS issue, the TERPS Elf doesn't know anything about it.

It seems to be just an airplane storage area or backup parking area. Aerial imagery shows multiple airplanes and vehicles parked there. "Ball Park" is simply just what they call it.

Where you go waiting for a clearance after pushing back. And/or if you need to sort something out. Think there's a penalty box at another field.

No idea where ballpark came from but I’d wager to guess it’s named after something in the airport’s history. EWR used to have Lindy and Amelia parking areas as well for a tip of the hat to those aviators.

As for what the ball park is used for, in the winter time it’s used for deice (not as common as you’d think in EWR - temps always hover just above freezing it seems). When it’s not used for deice, UAL uses it as a staging area for airplanes to get them off the gates. Example - wide body airplane rolls in from overseas in the early afternoon and parks in terminal B. Its next flight is back overseas but 4-5 hours later from a gate in C. UAL needs that gate in B as soon as everyone is off, so they will have a “move team” take that airplane to the ball park so it can be cleaned/catered/any mx taken care of plus an ETOPS inspection if it needs it. The airplane will then be towed to its gate for its next flight, before boarding is scheduled to begin (ideally).

On Tuesdays & Wednesdays there is typically more airplanes parked there during the day as those are the slowest days during the week for air travel.

Not on a chart, but KFIN has an area known as the "badlands". It's some corporate/school hangars near the back of the airport. Ground ground asks "say parking" Badlands is the answer and they give taxi instructions.

“What is the explanation. Do we need the TERPS Elf to explain it?”

No, we need pilots who understand the airport diagrams are in one section of the Chart Supplement.

TWYS SURROUNDING "BALLPARK" PRKG AREA (TWY Y BTN TWY S AND TWY U, TWY S BTN TWY Y AND TWY K, TWAY K BTN TWY S AND TWY B, TWY B BTN TWY K AND TWY U, AND TWY U BTN TWY B AND TWY Y) ACFT SPEED RSTR OF 17KTS/20MPH FOR ALL AFCT WITH WINGSPANS IN EXCESS OF 171 FT.

TERPS Elf....hehehe someone listens to OB. Next we will referencing Penguins.

I thought so but looks like no more. You’ve got the scenic hold pad and orchard pad from the old 32R, plus central deice.
Without looking at the 10-7, there are two on the north side between 27C and 27R, two near the approach end of 27L, and the huge one at the CDF. When CDF is in use they open an additional inbound ground metering frequency then the CDF ramp frequency is also opened.

I meant to quote the post about “penalty box” which I do recall being named on the Ohare chart back in the day and is gone.
The "Penalty Box" at ORD went away a year, or so, ago due to the taxiway changes in preparation for the extension of the C concourse.

Every time I go to work, it seems like a taxiway, or two, has changed.
