In reference to Captain's thread about transporters.....

If you were forced to transport to another universe, would you prefer to go to the Star Wars universe or the Star Trek universe and why?

Star Trek

The whole Roddenberry theme was a positive future.

In the Star Trek Universe, humanity has resolved socio-political sqabbles. No idea where the humans are in Star Wars...remember it happened in a Galaxy Far, Far away.

Star Trek for sure, much better looking women.

Star Trek, there's no question. If that really existed I'd want to be on a starship. Preferably as captain but whatever gets me out there.

Not enough choices. How about transport me in and out of Jennifer Aniston's bedroom.

Given that everything always breaks on the starship, I think I'd rather be on a planet...

Well, if you know what's going to happen and there's no potential for things to go wrong, it's not much of an adventure is it?

Star Trek is Louis and Clark days of space travel. They were stumbling about trying to figure it all out with crap technology.

Star Wars had the tech sorted out and were much more like current times with political infighting fueling day to day concerns. For that reason I choose the Lucas future. I'm not a fan of stumbling in the dark. Relationship conflicts are much more appealing to me than bear gonna eat me conflicts.

Ah but if Transporters were cheap, safe, and ubiquitous here on earth what, if anything, would you fly?

That's just a great question! I stole it and sent it to some friends as something to ponder on. Well done!

The later Star Treks were full of wussies. And bad, very bad, writing. Picard was a candy-a**, and his XO a PC non-entity. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Anyway, that pretend culture was way too tight-a**ed and homogenized.

So, send me to early Star Trek, or to Star Wars, real conflicts, with big wins, ghastly loses, gruesome deaths, outcomes in doubt.

You should watch Deep Space Nine... and not give up on it in the first 2 seasons. I think you'd enjoy it.

Never understood any of the latter Star Treks where some aliens would board the ship, and the computer would just kindly announce they were on board.

Seems like any idiot engineer could just give the computer the ability to take over the transporter and transport anyone not authorized to be on board, right back outside into the lovely cold vaccuum of space, without bothering anyone with it, nor needing dip****s running around shooting sensitive things in a space vessel with phasers.

Of course these are also the idiots that transport down half or more of their executive command structure to every planet they stop at, instead of using expendable personnel for those initial visits, too. So kinda par for the course.

"Hey let's send the entire command staff and one dude in a red shirt with a phaser to check everyplace out!" Yeah. That'd make it into the procedure book from a giant multiplanetary organization. Sure. Haha.

I watched the season of Voyager on Hulu+ and now I'm on DS9 in Amazon, season 2. I've changed my initial opinions of Sisco- I used to think he was a pansy.

Star Wars, just so I could kill that annoying Jar Jar Binks....

and then bang Queen Amidala.

Would I fly?

Abso-posit-tutely

The universe we find will be more StarTrek than Star Wars, because by the time a civilization gets space born, they already had to evolve into a peaceful, cooperative, prosperous, species.

There is no model to support that claim. Humans have made many leaps that you could pin the same argument to at the time yet we always make the leap and still argue and fight amongst ourselves.

And we are not off the planet yet, nor will we likely ever be. It's a self limiting system based in resource allocation. It will take all of mankind to cooperate and put in every effort and resource available in order to move off this planet and into space. As long as we waste all our resources to create money, we will not have the resources available to go to space, smile as that. Our own space program proved that. As soon as it quit being profitable, we quit spending money on it.

Unless you are directly involved in Space Operations you wouldn't know that for sure. Our Gov't has the nasty habit of keeping things like that secret.

Nope, we are not off the planet until we have self sustaining populations living not on this planet on a permanent basis, and the government sure as hell isn't keeping that a secret, not unless it's aliens growing us as livestock. Until we live freely off the planet, we are subject to extinction at any moment.

Depends, in the Star Trek future have they passed the pilot medical reform?

God, I hope not. . .I'd like us as vicious, creative, driven, crazy brave, howl-at-the moon, semi-barbarians.

Airplanes and antibiotics are nice, but civilization is otherwise grossly over-praised. Let's get out there, split some skulls(exoskeletons?), spill some blood, marvel at some truth and beauty. And despoil a few planets, and corrupt some lesser civilizations.

Effing agrarians have been dilluting the gene pool too long, I fear. . .more hunter-gathering, less feng shui. . .

The fictional "Old Man's War" series by John Scalzi is probably just as likely.

Too many amateur astronomers and too much mass has to be lifted to keep that one a secret for long. Amateurs have successfully tracked nearly every flight of USAF's "secret" space plane. Instantaneous worldwide communication -- and if need be, via solid crypto -- thanks to the Internet and commodity pricing on what once would have been massive computer power, made it possible for confirmation and creation of accurate Keplerian elements for tracking the "object" within a single orbit. At least one flight (when I was actively looking up such things quite some time ago) was suborbital and polar and still someone caught it and published the track from a option of the globe that is nearly unpopulated.

You've never heard of cover stories and deflection? ... LOOK OVER THERE!

:wink2:

Just because amateur astronomers have seen some doesn't mean they've seen all. Logic my boy, logic.

I think you guys are missing that these objects are generally all found via software and cameras. There's a few NRO assets that don't reflect light well, but they haven't quite figured out how to keep them from disrupting light sources expected to be seen from behind.

Are there smaller objects that are unknown to the gen pop? Sure.

Keep in mind the post was in response to someone stupidly claiming we've colonized somewhere off-planet. If it's big enough to carry a human to orbit, it's impossible to hide that it's up there. We weren't discussing tiny NRO toys trying to hide in the junk cloud(s).

The size of objects matters in this silly assertion. Maybe we'll hear about the secret midget astronaut settlers someday? LOL.

The real secrets are what the capabilities are of the orbiting gadgetry, not that they're up there.

My first inclination is Star Trek.

But I'm a geologist, and they were usually the first red-shirts to get "off'd"...
