Probably flying into Yuma AZ (KNYL) late next month; I haven't been through a dual military/civilian airport before -- at least not counting the National Guard presence at my home airport -- any particular considerations that would be good to be aware of? It seems like it's basically no different from any other large airport, but just thought I'd check.

Thanks!

It's very chill. Million Air used to pass out free lunch for showing up and drinking their deliciously inexpensive fuel. Haven't been in a bit. Remove the .mil planes and I think that place collapses in on itself. :)

So, I was landing there after dark in an Archer once. The tower casually mentioned “oh, BTW, the arresting gear is deployed”.

Not being familiar, I asked “what exactly is arresting gear”.

He says “oh, just some cables suspended about 8 inches above the runway”. Seemed very non-worried.

I, on the other hand thought that sounded detrimental to the health of the aircraft, so I asked for a different runway.

I’m not sure why this was not called out more urgently by the tower controller.

Check fees. I heard that Yuma was really working on keeping out the riff-raff by raising fees and charging large amounts of money for gas. I think it was on the AZ Pilots group on FB.

Don’t fly west or northwest into Mexico departing KNYL, it’s easier than you might imagine to do by mistake.

also keep an eye out for crop dusters operating close to the airport. Winter produce is in full swing and they fly day and night ops there ( more at night).

I diverted there around 8 years ago I think with a failing alternator. Tower was accommodating and easy to deal with, things didn't work much differently than any other towered field I've been to.

The available maintenance turned out to be two A&Ps in a van who'd migrated down there for the winter. Nice guys- they did what they could but ultimately I needed parts they didn't have so I ended up flying elsewhere.

When arresting gear is deployed it's at the departure end of the runway, unless your on an Aircraft Carrier then it's at the arrival end. The Tower wasn't concerned because he didn't think that your Archer would need the full runway to stop.
