the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

My wife brought home some "Pumpkin Spice Coffee". I'm usually derisive of all things Pumpkin Spice, but I tried it. It's always good to periodically remind yourself of how smart and right you are, but smart enough not to mention that to wife.

Pumpkin Spice coffee = hot water poured through a rotting pumpkin with some moss tossed if for good measure.

"If this is a medical emergency, please hang-up and dial 911"

I'm sure almost everyone hears this whenever calling a doctor's office.

But really, do people need to be reminded of this? Has anyone, ANYONE, called their doctor's office, heard "If this is a medical emergency, please hang-up and dial 911", and then said "oh that's right" and dialed 911?

otoh - there are people that have to be told repeatedly not to use a toaster in the bathtub.
OK, before there was 911, but...

In grade school, pretty young. My mother had to run an errand so she told me and my younger brother to sit on the couch, don't horse around, just watch TV. And that was what we were doing. It was the one time in our lives we were not fighting or horsing around, just sitting there quietly watching TV. Behaving. Really.

Then, the hanger for the big picture over the couch let go, the picture fell and the glass broke over my brothers head. I tried to call the doctors office, but for some reason wasn't getting through - then an operator came on the line (remember when the phone company had operators?) and asked if I was having trouble - she put me through to the doctor. The nurse asked how deep the cut was and I replied that I couldn't tell because it was full of blood. She then asked if there was a neighbor I could get - so I went over to the neighbors and she came to look at my brother. She was a nurse and was able to tape him up (wasn't that bad) and call the doctors office back. And all was well.

The annoying thing about the whole episode was that no one would believe that we were actually just sitting on the couch behaving.

I wanted to go flying today, but the weather didn’t cooperate.

I want to go flying tomorrow but the weather doesn’t look like it will cooperate.

I was flying near JZI when I heard reports of a dead coyote on the runway centerline. My first thought was, what a weird place to pick to lay down and die. Then I realized some departing private jet must have hit it on takeoff. I wonder if they had gear trouble?

Sounds like Coyote vs Acme Part 2 just took a dark turn.

Almost bought a Grumman yesterday at auction, but was outbid by $600 the final minute. "Sad" emoji.

How much are used Tom Cats going for these days?

Hoping one day to post in the classified section. After this post I'll only need 19 more posts. What's a reticent pilot to do?

I'm not selling. I'm trying to buy a second plane, and form a flying club at my local airport that currently has no aircraft for rent.
If someone is listing an airplane, you can just reply directly to the thread. If you're trying to get a member to sell then your luck will be pretty limited here on PoA, I think.

Fancy lightweight noise cancelling headsets don't let you hear much when the batteries die. They also don't work too great when the last time the batteries died, you put the dead batteries in your flight bag and forgot to throw them out. So you can replace dead batteries with dead batteries. Fun fun.

Got some time in a Piper Arrow. Plane flies like a ton of bricks. Stable in turbulence, though. Trim is not very sensitive.

When batteries die in an ANR headset it still functions perfectly as a headset, no louder than a regular non ANR headset.

Disagree. Some (most) headsets give you less clamping force in exchange for ANR, which leads to more loudness than PNR when the batteries die.

Since we are on the subject. What do you all think of Rugged Air RA950 ANR? Although the special is off now.

Didn't know that. But the good news for us is that the headset still cancels noise enough to still be functional. Nothing that will cause you to declare a pan pan or an emergency.

Looks like a PNR that's been converted to ANR, so maybe it doesn't get the aforementioned reduction in clamping force and the corresponding increase in comfort.

I'd love to know when Astound is going to kill Tivo in the Boston Massachusetts market.

There are some changes I want to make to my home network infrastructure, but the timetable for changes would be impacted by tivo going bye-bye.

All google gets me is that it will eventually go away.

I can't answer the tivo/astound question, but I decoupled my streaming from my ISP a long long time ago. I have it setup so that my ISP is just that, and then all the streaming stuff is done via roku to the tv's. For me it makes things much simpler. TV's are likewise in dumb mode, just receiving HDMI. Actually ended up with 2 ISPs, one cable based one 5G, just because it drives me nuts and interferes with my work when I lose Internet. So similar to my work's corporate setup, I can use either or both. IMHO all of them, ISPs and streaming providers, are kinda jerks. For streaming I use Sling, which is a little limited but I'm fine with that. GF likes more variety, so she's added a few more to the mix.

for me, I like the idea of my recordings being local rather than in the cloud. It also allows me to skip/fastforward. Some streaming services restrict the ability to fast forward (NESN-360 would get my vote for the worst user experience).

I know that the tivo dvr will go away. They stopped making them in 2025 and RCN won't replace dead tivo boxes. Eventually I will be going with some collection of streaming.

I recently debugged a problem with tivo and MOCA caused when the cable modem was replaced and have a temporary cat6 cable in place. I'd rather not leave that cat6 cable in place for months and months (balancing that against if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it). But I don't want to go through the hassle of a permanent cable run if astound will want the tivo boxes back next month.

For years I tried to keep my DVR recordings local, and finally gave up. In the end I had an HD Homerun box with a CableCard that I was paying a couple bucks a month for, back when we were still using cable TV. That box would record whatever I told it to, which I'd then dump through one tool to remove commercials (forget the name but I still have it on my Windows machine), then Handbrake to transcode it. Since we switched to all streaming, there's really no way that I can find to do something similar. I suspect there may be, but i care less and less. Nearly all of what we watch is available to stream whenever we want to, and MOST of it allows skipping commercials. Not all, but the few outliers are just not worth the work any more.

I recently spent a couple days ripping all of our DVDs to a network drive and setting up jellyfin so we can watch whatever we want, whenever, without the DVD player. Along the way I have discovered that there's almost nothing we bought on DVD that we'll likely ever watch again...

I get that. I have a maganvox, I think, dvr with digital and analog in that I rarely use these days. In principle it's great, but it's more cumbersome to setup than the built in recorder on sling. We've gone backwards in a lot of ways, IMO, in terms of losing control over content we purchase. Lots of views and thoughts on it, but to me both the performers and consumers were way better off when cd's were the majority form of music distribution. With video I'm not as familiar with the players, but the current environment seems to favor the production companies and streaming services more than ever vs the consumers and creative people. I know that's always been true, but it seems worse. To me it would be great if the cost to produce and the cost to stream were close to zero, and the only money made was by the talent themselves - writing/acting/performing.

The above might seem like a pipe dream, but if we ever get to the point where the tech is being driven by price more than feature, we'll get there. If we don't put AI on phones themselves, we should be there now. Don't tell me how cool the new phone is, tell me how much smaller and cheaper it is than last year's model.

They are closing a Walgreens in my area, and selling off the fixtures, including the shelving. For $120 I got a six shelf unit about six feet wide and a chair (what they used in the waiting area). Each shelf can hold 300 pounds - these are not your Home Depot models. Heavy as all get out, but will still be standing even if house is taken out by a tornado.

Almost bought a plane today. Got a cashiers check ready to go, but the mechanics back went out.

Somehow my life has evolved (deteriorated) into having conversations with AI
I think you're OK as long as you know it's AI. I say that partly based on my memory as a kid, that everybody's dad I knew would argue with television when either sports or the news was on, and I'm not entirely sure that they were aware that the TV couldn't hear them back...

Me? Today for the first time I ordered a workbench instead of making one. I'm pretty sure that's one of the signs that I'm older than I think I am.
