Doesn't really answer my question... How will it be any different than this board?
Come see for yourself.

Some people just want to play cop.
Jeepers, why are people so negative? New board, great! The more folks talking about aviation, the better.
IMHO, this whole thread is a testament to the shortcomings of the written word. I'm willing to bet if this discussion were held in a (real, not virtual) pilot lounge most folks would say, "Hey, cool, good luck with that."
Lordy, it's not like they're proposing to promote user fees or something!!!!!!!
Come see for yourself.
No incentive if you can't tell me how it'd even be different, much less better.
That's a nice way of putting it Chip...I couldn't agree more. There's plenty of room for another virtual back porch. Welcome to the neighborhood.
Even if the car was free?I don't buy a car w/o test driving it.
Went there. Nothing to see if you don't register.Great! Enjoy PoA! Just don't go bashing the purpleboard ... especially if you've never even bothered to GO there!

So the board rules are the same.
Some people just want to play cop. The truth of the matter is--playing cop isn't all that fun.
Well. It makes no sense to not let someone view the site without registering.

It isn't really different in any substantive way. But for whatever reason there were members on the red board that just never migrated over here. To them, the red board was home so to speak, and they just decided, after much goading from some others to "go start your own board if you don't like the rules here", to do exactly that. Simple really. I'm one of those that belong to all three. It's a free country (so far) so please feel free to visit, or not.

Just because it doesn't make sense to you, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.
We don't want the various search engines (i.e. Google) indexing the contents of our site... which would happen if we allowed unregistered access.
What is the risk of registering and canceling if you wanted out? There are well documented and relatively easy ways to stop the search engine spiders from crawling while still leaving the forums open to visitors.
Check http://www.vbulletin.org for an overwhelming list of mods you can apply.
And best of luck on your venture!
I, for one, do not register on forums I can't peruse ahead of time. Sorry...

Cool... thanks for the link... and thanks for the help and the support.
We'll check it out. We're newbs (obviously) at this... lots to learn. Right now we have a completely stock vBulletin implementation... although obviously customized to our needs/wants. Hopefully we'll start playing around with mods soon!

No need to mess with vbulletin. Adding the simple text file above will stop all search engine activity.
You are far more trusting of the search engines than I.
I tend to operate on the assumption that they don't all play by the standards.
Then again, I don't object to them crawling PoA. More visibility.
Well, any search engine that anybody would use will obey that file. If somebody wants to ignore it to spider your site, they will...but then again...if they wanted to do that a registration won't stop them either.
I hope Vbulletin is easier to modify than phpBB.vB has done a lot to make those mods even easier to apply, as well. The customizations we made here before the implementation of the hook system are the ones that give me the most grief with the upgrades.
I very nearly reverted PoA back to a clean slate when we moved, but that would have set us way back.
I hope Vbulletin is easier to modify than phpBB.
I'm probably going with VB on a future (non-aviation) project. It seems to be a bit nicer, even if it costs money. They're making it easier. It used to be you had to either modify php templates which could revert with an upgrade, or modify the php hidden code, which also would revert.
Now, modified templates are left alone but admins get messages that edits are needed, and they've added a bunch of "hooks" in the backstage code that you can use to register your own functions. They add new hooks with each release, too.
I'm not much of a modifier, m'self, for php. I've done a few little ones (like the mark this forum read mod on the search screen), but I leave the big ones to the experts.
'Some People' already think I spend too much time on the internet.Great. Another way to waste time when I should be working. As if I needed that!!
I think the answer to that is No, Maybe, and Perhaps..
That said, am I allowed to discuss topics like Troy Martin, Shirts, and why AOPA is useless without running afoul of the mods?
I'm cool with another option, but like others, I am not gonna register unless I can see it first....
