So what is the "Purple" board?

Some people just want to play cop.

That's not why we started it.

Interesting reaction from some of the folks here.

<shrugs>

Come play if you want. If you don't, that's cool.

Yeah, Andy. Well, they can yawn and imply it's boring and call it unnecessary or second rate, but it's still there and them what want to be in on it can go there and play.

If they don't, that's cool too. :)

Jeepers, why are people so negative? New board, great! The more folks talking about aviation, the better.

IMHO, this whole thread is a testament to the shortcomings of the written word. I'm willing to bet if this discussion were held in a (real, not virtual) pilot lounge most folks would say, "Hey, cool, good luck with that."

Lordy, it's not like they're proposing to promote user fees or something!!!!!!!

Uhhh isn't that exactly what I said above? The more outlets for our passion the better.

Come see for yourself.

No thanks. I clicked the link, but I just don't feel like going through yet another website registration when I don't know what good it'll do. No incentive if you can't tell me how it'd even be different, much less better.

Yeah, it is what you said, Adam. Seemed to be lost in the static, though, so I thought it bore repeating.

Well. It makes no sense to not let someone view the site without registering. I'm willing to bet that most people lurked on this forum before they ever joined. One day they saw a topic where they thought they had valuable input--so they register.

First thing I do--click on the link and see a login page. That's as far as I'm ever going to get. If I could *SEE* it, I might look at it when I'm bored. Some day I might register and post.

Oh, I don't know. Registration wasn't too painful and there are some interesting topics over there that I'm enjoying reading. They all seem pretty friendly.

There's plenty of room for another virtual back porch. Welcome to the neighborhood.

I don't buy a car w/o test driving it.

Great! Enjoy PoA! Just don't go bashing the purpleboard ... especially if you've never even bothered to GO there!
Went there. Nothing to see if you don't register.

Doesn't really answer my question... How will it be any different than this board? :dunno:

It isn't really different in any substantive way. But for whatever reason there were members on the red board that just never migrated over here. To them, the red board was home so to speak, and they just decided, after much goading from some others to "go start your own board if you don't like the rules here", to do exactly that. Simple really. I'm one of those that belong to all three. It's a free country (so far) so please feel free to visit, or not.

So the board rules are the same.

Some people just want to play cop. The truth of the matter is--playing cop isn't all that fun.

Where ever did you get that idea? Actually, the PB exists for precisely the opposite reason.

Well. It makes no sense to not let someone view the site without registering.

Just because it doesn't make sense to you, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.

We don't want the various search engines (i.e. Google) indexing the contents of our site... which would happen if we allowed unregistered access.

Thanks, Chip. Saw you over there. Welcome to the 'hood.

Bingo.

Frank, you're officially promoted to our PR director.

There are well documented and relatively easy ways to stop the search engine spiders from crawling while still leaving the forums open to visitors.

Check http://www.vbulletin.org for an overwhelming list of mods you can apply.

And best of luck on your venture! :)

I, for one, do not register on forums I can't peruse ahead of time. Sorry...

What is the risk of registering and canceling if you wanted out?

Cool... thanks for the link... and thanks for the help and the support.

We'll check it out. We're newbs (obviously) at this... lots to learn. Right now we have a completely stock vBulletin implementation... although obviously customized to our needs/wants. Hopefully we'll start playing around with mods soon!

First, vBulletin doesn't have a "cancel" option. Deletion requires manual intervention.

Second, I don't believe I implied there was any risk.

I just don't sign up for things I can't see first. Period.

vB has done a lot to make those mods even easier to apply, as well. The customizations we made here before the implementation of the hook system are the ones that give me the most grief with the upgrades.

I very nearly reverted PoA back to a clean slate when we moved, but that would have set us way back.

All that you have to do is create a file called "robots.txt" containing the following text...

Code:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

...and put it in the root directory of your web server. Once you do that, no search engines will spider your site.

No need to mess with vbulletin. Adding the simple text file above will stop all search engine activity.

You are far more trusting of the search engines than I.

I tend to operate on the assumption that they don't all play by the standards.

Then again, I don't object to them crawling PoA. More visibility. :)

Well, any search engine that anybody would use will obey that file. If somebody wants to ignore it to spider your site, they will...but then again...if they wanted to do that a registration won't stop them either.

If you mean they'll just set up an auto register script, that's true enough, as evidenced by the number of spambots out there.

I hope Vbulletin is easier to modify than phpBB.

They're making it easier. It used to be you had to either modify php templates which could revert with an upgrade, or modify the php hidden code, which also would revert.

Now, modified templates are left alone but admins get messages that edits are needed, and they've added a bunch of "hooks" in the backstage code that you can use to register your own functions. They add new hooks with each release, too.

I'm not much of a modifier, m'self, for php. I've done a few little ones (like the mark this forum read mod on the search screen), but I leave the big ones to the experts.

I'm probably going with VB on a future (non-aviation) project. It seems to be a bit nicer, even if it costs money.

Great. Another way to waste time when I should be working. As if I needed that!!
:D 'Some People' already think I spend too much time on the internet. :D

But...I just spent 40 minutes on my exercise bike while on the internet on the iPhone. It sure is hardddddd to typppppppe on itttttt while ridingggggggggg!

I'm a little dismayed about the now 77-post thread trashing a guy -- who's not there to defend himself -- over something that happened on the red board. Not exactly the kind of back porch I'm likely to hang out on much. "Be there or be talked about."

I'm cool with another option, but like others, I am not gonna register unless I can see it first....

That said, am I allowed to discuss topics like Troy Martin, Shirts, and why AOPA is useless without running afoul of the mods?

I think the answer to that is No, Maybe, and Perhaps. :D

BTW speaking of Troy....Reading his new mission statement, http://martinaviationgroup.com/mission.html, one gets the feeling that his previous goals have changed significantly. MAG now appears to be in the airport property development business and not flight training.

There were some folks who, for whatever reason, chose not to come here. I'm glad they're finding a home somewhere.

Hope the board works out.... other outlets are always good if they build community amongst pilots! In the last 2 weeks, I've had dinner with several pilot friends that I met in these online forums.

Just be civil and keep the topics within reason (no obscene stuff).
