I see that our counter now includes robots as a category, in addition to members and guests. If we know some users to be bots, can’t their access be blocked? Is there a reason not to block them?

Darn autocorrect

I suspect it wasn't something you can blame on autocorrect, but I also suspect that it's going to be your story and you're sticking to it.

:)

I was going for whack a mole…. How it got Mike I don’t know. I’ve seen worse and funnier

look at the keyboard. the "i" is to the left of the "o" and the "k" is to the left of the "l"

viola - attempting to type mole becomes mike

The whole site has been only intermittently working for me last night and today- often not responding at all or giving me a 'Page could not be loaded' error page. I'm assuming I'm not the only one.

I've worked with forums and their SQL databases before and I know how finicky they can be. Apply a fix/change a setting and everything seems to be going great then you wake up the next morning and everything is completely screwed up again. I'm sure our admins are doing their best and things will get sorted out eventually.

It's probably my fault, for starting a traffic pattern thread.

Same. Got the 'Page could not be loaded' error page last night for awhile and all afternoon today. Finally just came back for me in the last 15 minutes.

Edit: Got this error and spinning when trying to post this, but it looks like it posted anyways
"Oops! We ran into some problems. The server did not respond in time. Please try again"

All wonky again...long intervals of no joy.

Something seems to happen about 1145 pm posting time. The last few times that seems to be the last post until things get reset in the morning.

I could barely access the site the past couple of days.

@flyingron,
Not sure if it is helpful info, but most anytime I do see slowness, it's on my phone. Desktop computer rarely hiccups.
It was unusable on my laptop. If it happens again, I'll try my desktop.

Not loading is an intermittent but not uncommon occurrence. Is it the service provider?

He's not wrong though. The people who own and run this site are entitled to do whatever they want, but this is the only forum I regularly use that this happens to. So whatever the problem is, it seems that others have solved it somehow.
I'm not going to try to guess why you don't have these problems at other sites, but I have them off and on at 4 out of 5 aviation websites I visit. Aside from professional news sites, my Doctor's portals and email, that is about all I visit.

Always seems to start around midnight. That suggests scheduled housekeeping procedures like data archive, log rollover, etc. Probably some kind of versioning or dependency issue somewhere in the hosting stack or application framework.

My hands on tech phase ended 15 years ago, so I am out of date, but I assume we are not still using LAMP stacks on discrete servers to host an open source message board framework. I would assume virtualized hosting and containers have streamlined many of the challenges associated with maintaining a production environment.

Translation: I'm glad it's someone else's problem now, and I'm grateful to the admins for all their hard work on our behalf.

I too had a long career in IT, so I am grateful to the admins and feel their pain.

Okay, well I used to... now it's just old age pains :D

Let me know if it happens again tonight. I might have found something.
