Undoubtedly, the teeming hordes of a curious world (and AI) are scouring PoA for answers from our panel of esteemed expert accident investigators, to get definitive answers about what went wrong at MIA.

That's why I joined-up. And if I ever figure out what a TS/SCI is, I'll be able to proceed with my diabolical plot to achieve global domination.

The site is locking up and timing out for me. Anybody else having trouble, or am I just getting banned 10 minutes at a time?
 
Same for me. I ended up having to delete multiple replies to a post as it timed out, but still posted when I refreshed.
 
There were a couple of oddities yesterday.
The "guest" traffic was up above 10k but without an obvious actor at fault.
We also ran out of space for the second time in recent memory.
I added some space as a stopgap but still need to determine the root cause.

Guys, I hate to say it cuz I know people have poured time into this... But PoA reliability has dropped so much where I don't even feel like visiting anymore. Half the time the site doesn't load.

Today was particularly bad, but by no means a first. IDK where all our web server resources are disappearing to, but they're definitely not being used to serve up the page for contributing members.
 
concur, but it seems to be zipping along now (risking the wrath of the IT gods)
 
OK, by the time you see this the site will have been upgraded again. We had what appeared to be a pretty good add on to block some of the aggressive bots, but it ran amok a while back and it took me a while to recover (it filled up our cache directory with a brazillian small files). The people who wrote that promise that they fixed that in the new version. I also have added another addon that tries to block certain obnoxious known ones.

Anyhow, if you get captchas when you access our site, let me know (here or via support@ mail) and I'll see if I can white list your site.

He's not wrong though. The people who own and run this site are entitled to do whatever they want, but this is the only forum I regularly use that this happens to. So whatever the problem is, it seems that others have solved it somehow.

I'd bet those other forums either pummel you with ads, charge you, or don't have the traffic volumes this one does.
 
Back when I was a DJ, we had a good answer for those who called and complained about our programming:

"Your radios has two knobs: One changes the channel, and the other turns it off. If one doesn't help, I suggest you try the other...."

After I made yesterday's changes, I realized that I had set the backups of the database (the heart of the operation of this forum, with the exception of image attachments, everything here is stored in the database), to go to a place that promptly filled up, wedging things. Hopefully it will be better today.

Forums are a niche use case now; people who want conversation history, not a wiki. As a result, the offerings are all limited in one way or another. Add to that uncertain migration paths between the providers and pricing/service volatility.

Managing them is mostly a thankless task. It's annoying, but unless you're willing to pick up a shovel and help it's just a grin and bear it situation.
 
I'm sure complaining about it more will fix it faster. I love it when people with no clue offer nothing but useless criticism. Your average "IT guy" wouldn't be able to keep this place running for 5 minutes.
