Who’s wearing a Rolex? I’ve been a watch guy forever and pulled the trigger on a new piece. What’s everyone wearing?

I've had a Sea Dweller since 2010 (was a gift from my wife for graduating MBA night school).

I'm a guy who wears it 24x7x365 though. I don't baby it, I just get it serviced every 8 years or so. I swim, shower, work on cars, etc with it on. It still gets compliments. :)

back in the day I scrounged up enough moolah to either get a rollie OR get my ppl. I chose wisely, methinks. but the polar explorer II really grew on me.

I think you're on the wrong forum...you're looking for www.beechtalk.com

We have a watch thread around here somewhere. I'd love to have a Rolex, but every time my airplane finds out I have a little bit of money it breaks. I did buy a gray market Oris a few years ago, but these days I'm shopping Seiko and Timex and can't even afford those.

The same Citizen Eco-Drive I bought back in 2014 and have worn daily since a ship radar killed my G-Shock as a younger man. Don't have to take it off in the SCIF, never needs a battery, doesn't bug me about emails, looks nice enough to still draw compliments occasionally (although the dial lettering has almost completely rubbed off now). Worth every penny!

I have an Explorer (ref. 1016) from 1971. Dad bought it in Geneva at Bucherer. I don't know that it's ever been opened, to be honest. It still has the original crystal and I know it hasn't been touched since the late 1980s. I got a service quote from a place that has a good reputation for servicing and not molesting old Rolexes; it was more than double the amount I've ever spent on a watch.

I wear it occasionally, but not often. It still runs, self-winds, and keeps time probably within spec, though I don't think I've ever let it run long enough to get a good idea of just how accurate it is.

Used to wear a watch, but my pocket computer now keeps pretty good time

Mostly wear the iWatch now but in the Navy and during my career working in a SCIF it was the Speedmaster. Bought it in Greece on a port call in 91.

Gift from employer for 25 years. I probably wear it 3 times a year.

Nothing that nice. I have three Seiko's--Chronograph, nice dress watch, and a nicer dress watch with the school seal from my grad school alma mater on the face.

I haven't worn any of then since I got my first Apple Watch. The nearly limitless functionality is too hard to ignore.

I don't wear a watch unless I'm flying. Then I wear this:

And that's way more money now then when I bought mine. Looked up the order, and it cost me $29 in 2018. Paying close to $50 for a watch would make me sad, can't wrap my head around that.

Rolex is still around as a company?

Haven't worn a wristwatch since my Seiko exploded one night at work in 1987. Last time I had to dress in nice clothes, I carried a pocket watch.

We have a watch thread around here somewhere.

Here's one of them:

There are a few others.

I have a Seiko Flightmaster and a Citizen Blue Angels Eco Drive, but most of the time when flying I use either an analog Casio or a G-Shock. No real interest in a Rolex; if I wanted to shell out that kind of money on a watch, it would probably be an Omega Speedmaster.

I have been thinking about a Bulova Lunar Pilot, though, mostly because I love the backstory. https://www.bulova.com/us/en/collection/lunar-pilot/

Except for the Avocet and Suunto altimeter watches I used for paramotoring, I haven't worn a watch in at least 35 years.

My wife gave me a Submariner ‘Hulk’ about a dozen years ago. I mostly wear that as a daily beater. She subsequently gave me a couple of dressier TAG Hauer’s that I occasionally wear. Since I carry a smart phone everywhere I don’t have access to a clock, I could go without a watch. I wear it mainly to honor my wife’s gift.

As a retiree I'm so glad I no longer need to know what time of day it is, or even the day of the week. Except I never fly on weekends. Anyway, my phone tells me everything.

Tim

I've been collecting NFW watches for a few years now. Not as high end as a Rolex for sure, but they are designed and assembled by the guy that owns the company. And I think they are pretty rad.

Nice gift, who’s the employer?

I looked at my 401k today. At this rate I’m gonna test the theory to see if I get a second one at 50 years…

The nicest watch I ever had was a Heuer Leonidas diver's watch. I lost it in the mosh pit of a Bush concert in the early 90's. After that I wore $10 plastic digital watches for a while, then I quit wearing watches altogether.

Oyster Day-Date. My father bought it as a retirement gift to himself in the early 90s. After his passing, my brothers and I share it in one year turns. It's rarely worn as no one wants it lost on their watch (hahaha). Some live in areas where theft/robbery is a concern.

These things need to be worn. I just bought a watch winder and it's doing much better. It's a mortgage payment to service them.

Prior, a 20+ year old Citizens EcoDrive was my dress watch.

My every day watch is a Garmin 920XT. I will upgrade to a Garmin Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED once I can get over the price tag.

SWMBO bought me a Breitling as a wedding gift. About the same time, Breitling stopped selling parts to independent repair shops. So all repairs involve shipping the watch to Breitling. Every time I've sent it in, it has cost 1/3 of the purchase value of the watch to have it serviced. I'd sell it in a heartbeat if that wouldn't put me on "the list" with SWMBO.

Rolex, Breitling, etc make beautiful watches, but they are like airplanes and demand a small fortune in maintenance on a routine basis.

I got an Eco Drive around 2008. Worked great until 2012 or 2013, then it would quit after about 4 hours. Sent it in for service, and they just said I needed to have it in the Sun more, but charged me a pretty penny to tell me that. I set it in the Sun for whatever time it said in the manual would fully charge it, and it lasted less than 3 hours. I called Citizen, and they said to send it in with another check, and they’d evaluate it again. I told them that every time Eco Drive came up, I’d tell everyone what lousy service they had.

So there ya go. I kept my promise.

Now I wear a cheap Casio that gets moisture in it whenever I fall in the water while paddle boarding, but it’s lasted 3 times as long as the Eco Drive for less than 1/10 the price.

There was a time in my life when I really wanted a Rolex. Could’ve afforded one too. Could afford one now.

No longer have any desire for one. A Timex works just fine for me.

Enjoy your bauble.

Exactly. I like wearing a watch. I feel half-naked without one. But I wear a Seiko every day. Rugged, inexpensive, accurate, good looking (IMO). The Breitling? Too ostentatious. But I was looking in the Breitling catalog a while back and came across this:https://www.breitling.com/us-en/wat...GP4dhHRY0cfSh31C3oLKZDZgpn2zAAAwaAjeqEALw_wcB

I'll never buy one, but it is gorgeous. Owning it would be like having a stripper girlfriend. A blast in some ways, but with a lot of unwanted drama.

The Navitimer is a lovely watch, and I certainly wouldn’t turn one down as a gift, but frankly I think my Seiko Flightmaster looks just as good.

Been looking at some Maratac watches, seems a good build quality, albeit a bit big

I got an Eco Drive around 2008.
I received an Eco-Drive as a gift when I retired from my firm. Still runs great, but it’s not my day-to-day.

I used to have a fake Rolex. It was one of those that was a little harder to tell it was fake without very close examination. The easy way to tell is the presence of a ticking second hand. This one had a sweep hand.

What I really would like, though, is that there’s a watch company with my last name.
