Rolex

I used to have a fake Rolex. It wasn’t even a good fake. A friend bought it in China. He said it was such a bad fake and so obvious that he had to get it for me as a joke. He paid $3, but said he could have bargained it down to $2. It actually kept accurate time.

I knew this site would eventually go from hookers all the way to horology......
Didn't Willie Nelson write a slogan for Rolex? "If you've got the money, I've got the time..."*

*According to wiki, Willie didn't write it. It was Lefty Frizzell.

And.... Richard Gere apparently wore a Rolex in "Pretty Woman". Which clearly proves the point that I have in no way made. I'll dial it back.

Does my $30 "Rolex" I bought in Tongduchon outside of Camp Casey when I was stationed in Korea count? Of course it didn't quite make it the 28 years since. Seems it may have been a knockoff and of lesser quality. I wonder if I can get my money back??? :D

I have a whole drawer of watches, many of them antiques with interesting movements. Alas, they all have been supplanted by my Apple watch.

My late first wife gave me a Rolex to commemorate my first solo on 7/11/81. We were poor back then, but she worked for a jeweler and got a great deal. Used it as my daily wear and dive watch for many years, but for the last 25 or so just wear it on special occasions. Still keeps time to within a couple of seconds per day.

Excellent watch and what a gift!

The original Pepsi/Coke/RootBeer GMT are awesome watches for the long haul.

Only complaint is, those bezels will fade and scratch pretty easily.

The good news is they can be replaced, even cheaply if you replace with aftermarket and just hold on to the original.

I have a newer ceramic GMT TT and its great, but I favor my 1991 era RootBeer which is absolutely remarkable keeping time and very rarely needs any adjustment.

Who’s wearing a Rolex? I’ve been a watch guy forever and pulled the trigger on a new piece. What’s everyone wearing?
Unless you are buying an OP/Airking--Rolex is always as solid answer. Very few watches retain significant value (or even go UP) in value over time.

SWMBO bought me a Breitling as a wedding gift. About the same time, Breitling stopped selling parts to independent repair shops. So all repairs involve shipping the watch to Breitling. Every time I've sent it in, it has cost 1/3 of the purchase value of the watch to have it serviced. I'd sell it in a heartbeat if that wouldn't put me on "the list" with SWMBO.

Rolex, Breitling, etc make beautiful watches, but they are like airplanes and demand a small fortune in maintenance on a routine basis.
Never had much of an issue with any Rolex nor Omega.
