Ah, I went to the AOPA Summit too.
Got to meet the kings. They were awesome

Which Hard 8 did you go to? I like the one in Stephenville. You fly in, and they come to the airport and pick you up. Just across the street, I love that place.

Well, I didn't even get to the practical portion! The DPE failed me on the oral. I had a bad initial interaction with him, and just knew it was going to go south (which it did). I recorded the oral and that also riled him up. Probably a bad move! But in retrospect, I have proof he was overall harsh on me. Do I have any recourse? Or just suck it up, and retest with a different DPE? Any advice would be great.

Listen to the recording a few times. At some point, you said gave a bad answer (stall warning buzzer), then he asked a deeper question which proved that your answer wasn't just poorly phrased (stall break). He kept digging, and you just didn't know about what he was asking (incipient spin), then you just had no recovery (developed spin). Your recording turned that into an inverted flat spin at low altitude, with predictable results.

The really bad thing is that you might have gotten some slack at the beginning (". . .you watching your airspeed . . ?") if the guy weren't worried about having a permanent record of it.

I don't know, I've flown into Stephenville a few times to have the BBQ and it ain't that great. So now they are opening other branches of it (read "chain"), that in my opinion pretty much seals its fate. Just another mediocre BBQ chain.

Who are you talking to? Pete is dead. Murdered, in fact, right here in front of you. On this very thread!

Yeah, you are right I hate it too.
But it was between that and the French Room and I really just wanted something simple.

Should have gone with the French Room

We went to the one in Roanoke. There's a [thread=62533]thread[/thread] on it.

That must have happened in one of those 1200 posts that I haven't read yet. I'm responding to the first post. I'm 56, I might not live long enough to read the whole thread . . .

I don't blame you... Allow me to bring you up the speed.

In short, the summary is there was a fellow called Pete who came on here asking for some help and advice. He was viciously set upon and attacked, whereupon he defended himself and skillfully thrashed all who came at him and dispatched them one by one. They all tried, in vain, to subdue him but were in turn subdued in their own way. Eventually, he grew tired of the endless waves of lesser beings coming at him, so he exposed himself as a troll so that he could quietly go back to where he had been all these years. Is he the Captain? Is he Jay? Is he perhaps even Henning? :dunno: I personally do not believe so. I believe he called himself a troll as a means to escape, and is none of these gentlemen (a term I use loosely).

Where I enter is that I signed up a few days ago to try to talk some sense to the great unwashed that call themselves POA followers, and pointed that that perhaps Pete was in fact real. It seems unreal that someone as brilliant and charismatic as Pete actually exists, but the possibility does exist and is in fact likely in my opinion. I have been accused of being Pete, which I emphatically deny.

I hope this short summary has helped.

One giant hole in your theory. Pete did not have to do or say anything to escape this thread. All he had to do was ignore it and it would have died a early and proper death. Instead, he like you, have chosen to try to defend the indefensible, until it becomes ridiculous, and then its like leading lambs to the slaughter.

Unfortunately, that is known as the "ostrich argument". Burying your head in the sand and ignoring something does not make it go away.

No I look it more like the fire analogy. If your house is on fire, you do not spray gasoline on to it. Pete had to see that his arguments were fanning the flames, all he had to do was stop being involved. His declaring himself a troll served absolutely no purpose other than to force him to no longer be able to defend himself. Ignoring the thread, or not posting more fodder for the fire would have served the same purpose, and he still would have been ahead of where he is now.

If he had just disappeared, the relentless beating would have continued. He needed to end it by saying, "It was just a joke I'm just an average joe who takes it up the rear, and parrots all this old fashioned useless stuff to make sure I get all my certificates". This way, he attempted to deflate his attackers. If he had just disappeared, he would have been forever remembered in a certain way, instead he needed to change the perception of himself before he terminated himself.

Now, of course, this is just my theory.

I don't need a lot of that stuff, ever. If my IFR rated moving map GPS takes a nap in my plane, I can use my iPad. If my iPad takes a crap, I can use my iPhone. So I have THREE options, all electronic, and all better than parchment. So why insist on the parchment option? Can you at least concede than insisting on paper is ridiculous? I will never use it again. Never ever. Not in normal use. Not in emergency use.

I thought you were going to try to hold out just a little longer, Sybil:rofl:

I think I remember seeing that movie in the theater when I was a kid:D

What do you do when GPS doesn't work? It's gone down before, it'll go down again.

So what, I have my maps on the iPad. I will know my last known good position before the GPS went down, so I know where I am. No need for paper ever, other than to wipe your ass after taking a crap in a plastic bag.

Pete and St. Peter sound like the same person to me, with the same know-it-all attitude. Sorry, guys, but when you demonstrate some knowledge and history, we might start taking what you say seriously. But, so far, all I've seen is ranting from people with no known qualifications to back them up. Call me old fashioned, call me old, I don't care. I carry paper for the same reason I carry an old E-6B. Batteries don't die. Display hybrids don't crap out. Both of which have happened at one time or another with my favorite pocket calculator (HP-41CV). Do I like modern electronics? Of course I do and I hope you buy lots of products with my employer's silicon in them. But, do I trust them as my sole source of information that can keep me out of the trees? Nope. I like backups. Backups with different technologies. Backups with different dependencies. I'm old enough to have needed such, and I won't be surprised if I need them again.

The rest of the drift in this thread has really gone off the deep end. That's all I'm going to say about that.

To some extent, I actually enjoy doing it on paper. Getting started the night before with a pencil and plotter on the sectional is something I enjoy. I do use Foreflight on my iPad Mini. I think the thing I use it for most is making sure I know which bravo ring I am under.

Thank you Scott. Finally a voice of reason Just don't tell the dumbass DPE, he has never heard of it therefore it does not exist.

Thank you Ghery and 6PC for your apologies. Both of you were able to have an intelligent and coherent response to me, and I'm sure Pete appreciates both of your efforts to understand him and to apologize for your past actions. On his behalf, I accept both your apologies. However, 6PC, you appear to have lapsed in your very next post.

:nono:

Now time for my rebuttal...

First of all, let's assume that an iPad has a reliability of 95%, and an iPhone also of 95%. I believe both are higher than that. Let's also assume that the built in IFR rated GPS with WAAS capabilities has a reliability of 99%. What is the probability that all three will disappear in a puff of smoke, permanently (not talking about a temporary loss of signal or crash)? Yes, indeed, it is 0.0025%. A rather small number, a number I would say is significantly less than the probability that your engine will stop turning or even, for some of you old codgers buzzing around up there, better odds than your tickers continuing for the duration of the flight.

But let's assume all three die. It is a very unpleasant day. Luckily we have something called a radio. And if it is not a complete pile of junk that you're flying, you may even have two radios! Wonderful!

You: Um, ATC dude, 6PC here

(Try to sound old and use a hick accent if you can, Texan always works well. If you sound old and senile, they will cut you some slack).

ATC Dude: 6PC, go ahead.

You: Er, my iPhone died on me and I demand a vector to the nearest airport

(Remember he works for you, he is your own personal *****, even though the MFers in Washington aren't paying him right now)

ATC Dude: 6PC, squawk XXXX and ident.
You: Okey dokey

ATC Dude: 6PC, radar contact XX miles NW of YY VOR, nearest airport is KABC 20 miles at a heading of 240.

See how easy that is? No paper required.

Some of you probably needed blankey's as kids. I understand, this is your blankey. You probably also didn't get enough time at your Mama's teat. I heard you can get a large rubber teat that you can hang up on one side and comfort yourself occasionally.

Try to wean yourself off paper. You will survive, I promise.

It will be alright.

What were you incorrectly interpreting as an apology?
(realize this question feeds the troll but anything to get us to 2000)

So your GPS with WAAS craps out and you get vectors I'm sorry what sort of altitude should you fly to and what is your missed approach and what is your DH? All things I find on my piece of paper. :)
