What I need to know, is there a publicly accessible path back to the original N-number?
Yes. There are online public databases that will allow searching for aircraft serial numbers, as well as N-numbers. So a bit of searching will allow the connecting of the dots.

Doesn't ordering the CD from the FAA on a particular aircraft, give you the entire history file on it? I've got the one for my L-5, I don't remember everything that's on it.

Yes the "Registration" file goes all the way back to the original N-Number for the aircraft. Same information available via CARES.

I think the above indicates the answer is this:
If I request an N-number change and it goes through, then anyone looking up my old number will find my new number. True?

If my interpretation is correct, can I request that cross-reference not be published?

Anyone have an N-number reassignment I can check out for the published format?

If they have your old N number, they will find your serial number. And with your serial number, they will find your N number. I think.

We had N1710R reassigned to N271RG about a decade ago.

I'd expect to see "deregistered aircraft" under the old tail, but this one's a little weird as it appears that the FAA has reserved N1710R for the Privacy ICAO Address program.

I bet aviationdb.com has the plane listed under the old tail number, though...

I'm just starting to plot out the next book in the Malloy series. (The current book is through first draft and into second edit).

Scenario: For whatever reason, I want to change my aircraft's N-number and will take whatever the FAA assigns.
I know how to do that: https://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/aircraft_certification/aircraft_registry/special_nnumbers

What I need to know, is there a publicly accessible path back to the original N-number?

TIA.
Try aviationdb.com plug in serial number

If you're trying to separate your old N# with the new one, look into creating an LLC New Mexico, Wyoming, Delaware or Nevada. I do not know the steps, but you can create an LLC where your name is hidden.

I'm assuming it is not hidden from law enforcement, etc. if they have a court order, but it certainly would be hidden from any basic search.
