Over 65 Covid Shot

Shingles shots I got. Flu and Covid never made sense to me. Every single time I’ve got a shot I’ve gotten sick, and every time I didn’t get the shot, at worst, I didn’t get any sicker than when I got the shot. And when I got the shot I often got the flu that season also.

I think a lot of people have an expectation that the flu shot mitigates symptoms or at least has a very high prevention rate. However, it's my understanding that the folks making the shots make an educated guess regarding the types of flu that will be prevalent each season... not an exact science and certainly not anywhere close to 100% effective (sometimes lucky to be 60% effective).

but, I'm not a virologist or epidemiologist, don't play one on TV, didn't stay at a holiday inn express.

Yes, that's all true. And it all boils down to it's not worth it to me.

The above is for the flu only. Covid shot is even worse IMO.

…..Every single time I’ve got a shot I’ve gotten sick…..

You didn’t get sick, you got “sick-like symptoms”, according to some.

I must have confused this with the flu shot. I got the flu and tetanus vaccines last week, just had a minor sore arm. Yesterday I got the Comirnaty Covid and the first dose of Shingrix, and I felt terrible all day. My wife told me the first Shingrix injection made her sick, so I'm guessing that's what made me feel so bad today.
The second Shingrix shot laid me to the bone. Jacked me up. Golly.

That always makes me laugh too. Doctors especially don't like it when you laugh at them.

I've had two different types of covid shots over three years, including my wife. I was 68 at the time of the first shot and I never had any type of reaction afterwards, and my wife didn't either. I choose to not get a shot last fall as I retired and I wasn't constantly exposed to all the work travel with hotels, airlines and sitting in a cockpit with a non-believer.

….The worst was anthrax.

I would agree. Looking at one of my yellow shot cards, it seems I got a total of seven of those. I can recall being laid out on a cot in Kuwait for three days and not wanting to move at all. That one was miserable.

I've heard that the second shot is rough, but my wife said her first one was bad and the second one was not.

The good thing about Shingrix is it appears to be two injections and then you're done.

I’ve had them all. My Dad came down with Shingles, and boy! I was the next in line for Shingrix. During the first wave of Covid I was infected by someone who really should have known she was contagious. Prevnar 13. Then 21… I think it was 21. Flu. Anthrax. Whatever they were offering. Back in the 1960s I was in the USN and I remember walking the gantlet while coremen armed with air guns gave me shots in both arms as I walked through. Must have been ten shots at one pass! Vietnam Nam War era, got to protect the troops!

Going in for the latest Covid and Flu this Friday. RFK Jr. is in my sole opinion a complete moron, vaccine wise. -Skip

I had flu + covid shots a couple of Fridays ago. Felt rough until Sunday afternoon. So far I've managed to avoid getting covid, and I would rather stay that way. I have friends and family who ended up with long covid that took between 3 months and a year to go away, so I'd rather not roll the dice with that one.

Yeah, mortality rates are way down from when everyone had a naive immune system, but many are still getting weeks, months and sometimes years long cases of long covid. All of which are greatly reduced by vaccines.

Not true for flu eiher. There are a few shots that are only approved for those over 65, but those that are approved for everyone have the same dosage for adults. Only Affuria has a reduced under 3 yo dose.

Prove it.

"""We evaluate the effect of pre-infection COVID-19 vaccination on the risk of major acute cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality in individuals aged 40–85 years during one year after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Among individuals with COVID-19 (n = 18,223 vaccinated, n = 15,331 not vaccinated), vaccination provided a significant protective effect against MACE (weighted incidence rate ratio [wIRR] 0.71, 95% CI 0.58–0.84) and all-cause mortality (wIRR 0.32, 95% CI 0.28–0.36). This effect persisted for approximately three months after the acute infection. These findings underscore the importance of COVID-19 vaccination in reducing both short-term and long-term health risks associated with the infection."""

I haven't had a flu shot in over 50 years. The last one caused me to pass out in the doctor's office waiting room on my way out. Haven't had the flu, either.

Covid shots for me are in the past. I came down with a mild case a while back and my doctor recommended against one in the future. Natural immunity.

I had over 100 vaccinations in the Army. The worst was anthrax.
Anthrax is up there but I stopped at I believe shot 4. I hated Small Pox. That one was funny though. I tried to convince the flight surgeon I hadn’t the shot before but he said since I was born in the 70s I most likely did. Of course that’s the difference between 3 pokes and 15! Good friend of mine (CPT) was in front of me and was acting nervous. Gets the 3 pokes and turns white as a ghost. They have to sit him down because he’s about to pass out. I’m like, great and I got 15 of those coming. Fortunately survived without passing out.

I’ve never really had issues with needles but been to the doc enough times in the military to see some people with a real fear of them. Needle phobia is no joke and I’ve seen guys avoid them like the plague.

I hated Small Pox.

Getting the SP booster didn't bother me, and I felt weirdly proud of having a scar on both shoulders. But the aftermath was nasty. Walking around for 2 weeks with an open sore was yuck.

In the 90's we used to get this gamma globulin thing in the butt cheek. It was supposed to provide temporary protection for Hep 2 and a bunch of unspecified things. They kept it in a fridge so it felt like pancake syrup going in and left a golf ball sized lump. Later I researched it and found it was mostly useless.

I read somewhere that there is some science to support the idea of generalized immunity. By getting so many vaxes, we trained our immune systems to be more resistant to other things. Same principle as farm kids who play in pig **** don't get asthma. Sounds like BS but who knows.

remember when they told us we would at some point have herd immunity

Unfortunately there were too many idiots who refused to get the vaccine so it didn’t happen. And it turns out that this particular virus mutates rapidly so unless everyone gets the updated vaccine herd immunity won’t happen.

I remember one specific idiot who told us if we got the vaccine we wouldn't get covid.

I just got home from my annual physical. My doctor told me the flu shot is indeed a higher dose for people over 65 (which includes me), but the covid shot is the same for all adults.

I'm an engineer, not a medical professional, but I've studied enough biology and statistics to know when somebody's spouting BS about vaccine efficacy (not aimed at you, Ron).

I just pulled the list of approved flu vaccines and none of that appears to be true.
