What a difference a week makes. Cuts from my 3rd official formation training sortie on Saturday. This is really hard work but extremely rewarding when you get close, nice to see progress.

Nothing fancy, but still a fun flight. I took a friend up who is a pilot but hasn't flown in a while. I wanted to take him around SAN and the bay tour but the marine layer was not having any of that this weekend so we turned around and headed inland. I let him fly around and he was more familiar with the inland portions of San Diego than I am so he gave me a nice tour of alpine and Julian.

He just sent me a short edited video of the flight which was fantastic. Flying is amazing :)

Selections from an EAA Young Eagles flight yesterday, really a blessing to share the joy of flight with these kids.

Cuts from another Young Eagle flight - too much wind noise on this one once flying so added music instead - real treat to fly these kids.

Well, I have a few unedited videos on YouTube, but decided to make a day project of this. Downloaded a trial version of PowerDirector and had a little bit of fun. The video is with an old Hero1.

Flew with a friend who is taking lessons on Sunday and flew over Comic-Con and the bay. Too cloudy to go up and down the coast, though, so it was a shorter flight. Still, first time I was able to go flying in a few weeks.

He took some video and posted it:

That looks super fun!

When you request "overhead 27R" at around 7:04, does that mean you want permission to do a descending 360 just shy of the runway threshold in order to lose some speed?

Is that the same as an "overhead break"?

'Request overhead' tells the tower controller I want the overhead break to landing. The controllers at KSEE are excellent since we have a large warbird population.

The overhead lets them know you'll initially arrive at the airport at altitude and with speed, not set up for landing.

They usually give us 'report 3-mile initial', which means notify them we are established on the centerline at 3 miles and at or above pattern altitude. I rarely get to report initial though, the controllers are watching and usually issue a 'clear to land, break mid-field, right turns, short approach approved, 27 right' or similar, just as I approach the 3-mile mark (basically above the elbow in Interstate 8).

Sometimes they will let us get a little lower than pattern but normally it will be at pattern altitude (1600'). The break is wherever they need for separation/flow, typically mid-field but sometimes over the numbers, others are at departure end.

Almost always comes with 'short approach approved' which lets us stay inside Rattlesnake Mountain and is the most fun.

That looks like lots of fun, John! I'm going to have to look you up next time I'm in San Diego! ;-)

This will be pictures + video. My daughter Abby and I did our first Pilots 'n Paws mission today. Up at 5:30 for a sunrise departure from our home field (Hicks, T67, Fort Worth, TX) and headed up to McAlester, Oklahoma (KMLC) to meet a gentleman named Kaleb, who was handing off a senior Collie named Chipper. This dog was abandoned by his family due to his age, but we flew him to his new home near Stephenville, TX (KSEP).

Abigail beautifully captured the beauty of the area around McAlester, Oklahoma as we descended and landed there. I especially like the end (about 8 minutes into the video)--with our plane's shadow. The Ouachita and Kiamichi Mountains to the east peeked out from under their morning blankets, and the terrain was so verdant from this year's earlier torrential rain, despite the fact that we're nearly in August--the fields are usually brown from heat exhaustion by now. Near the airport, a ridge runs north/south just before you turn final for the runway, so you're flying right at a hill of trees while on the base leg, then make a 90-degree turn to final, and clear power lines, a freeway overpass and a runway antenna array before arriving at a classic southern midwest airport graced by hospitable folk.

Enjoy the ride!

Tried new location for GoPro (on pitot tube), turned out pretty cool. Need to get an ND filter on it for prop blur.

So after 2 weeks on the road for business I took some time yesterday to unwind in the Yak, still smiling.

Another recent Young Eagles Flight - I am really enjoying these flights.

Took the Yak up yesterday for a fun acro flight before it goes down for conditional inspection and mod period this week - I love the damn thing more and more each time I take it out, almost 40 hrs in it since February and that is with a lot of down time troubleshooting minor air system problems and travelling for business.

5-ship dissimilar aircraft formation training flight from last weekend - was a great flight.

Out and about

I was out flying one day and had a massive flashback (no, not drug induced\related). I was 4 years old and propped up on parachutes in the back of the PA-11 while Dad flew in and out of the holes in the sky.
This one is for you, Dad.

Well, it ain't anything special, but here's a video of me flying the ol' Skylane today. It was a beautiful, clear day with just a little crosswind. Shot with my Mobius Action Cam. Enjoy.

Edit: Didn't realize you have to specify HD on the link. It'll look much better now :)

A video of what worked and didn't work for me

You have to "monetize" so ads appear.

The other thing that can happen is that if you use the "wrong" music, youtube will put the adverts on for you and send the money to someone else while still annoying your viewers.

Some people (Lindsey Sterling for example) make good money. But they have more than millions of views per video (She has 1 trillion views, 7 million subscribers). Most people sign up for the advertising and don't ever see a dime.

Interesting. Eh, the flying itself, the sharing it with friends, and having the opportunity to provide the first flight experience for a few folks was reward enough for me. I flew 8 people yesterday, 5 of which were first timers. Good times!
