Oshkosh 2027

We're selling our plane so not sure yet on our mode of transport, but we'll be there.

Just put all the camping stuff away from this year. Probably roughing it again next year... although there has been talk of one of us driving a large RV up to use as home base...

Trying to talk the wife into going again "too much walking" was her reply

I can only manage this once every 5 years or so. The heat and the humidity are killers when the weather at home is so sublime all summer long. We've been in the 70s most of the summer with low humidity. It's been heaven in the PNW, especially after looking at the temperatures around the country. My perception is that the thunderstorm activity has gotten worse, and more widespread each summer for the past decade or so. Last year, my return flight from KOSH involved an 800 nm detour to fly around really bad weather. I'm not getting the PIC hours I do in AirVenture years, but I am enjoying local flights and sleeping in my own bed each night.

do you have places you recommend?

Neenah and Appleton are going to be significantly less expensive than staying in Osh.
If you have a car, its a 25 min drive. I have done this ~4 times and never had an issue with parking or crasy lines to get in or out of parking lots.
1 caveat: If I am driving, I am not staying for the night show. Getting out on Wed night can take hours.

For next year I booked the Days Inn Wyndham in Neenah. This is a REALLY good deal for Airventure.

Currently hotels dot com shows a pretty good deal on a Super 8

None of these hotels are going to be amazing but you get a comfortable place to sleep, free breakfast, running water and Wifi.
I prefer an AirBnB to a hotel and there are currently a lot available in Appleton and Neenah. I generally expect to spend about $1500 on lodging for the week.
Last year it was only ~1000 and this year it was $1700 so it varies.

We stayed at an airB&B about 25miles away,it was on a little lake and wonderful.Getting out Wed night was not however.

After that Fisk craziness this year, I've got my IFR slot reserved! ;)

(well, I would if I could, but it's almost a year too early to reserve a slot)

Can't wait! I'll almost certainly be in Scholler again. It'll be OSH number 23 for me!

After 4 years, I've sold my travel trailer. I'm looking forward to renting a nicer one next year!

I gotta find a new plane to fly in…

So far: Pietenpol, Archer, Varga, some weird Ukrainian twin rotax pusher, RV-8, RV-4, C-180, Vashon Ranger, C-120 and SR-22.

Landed all four runways, done the prison arrival, been ignored at Fisk, ignored by tower and once NORDO on the ultralight arrival. Departed special V once.

Still gotta try IFR, warbird and the high pattern.

I've done Fisk every year, but while I'm there I've used Prison and Warbird.

This year I got ignored on downwind to 27. I was behind a flight of 3 Cessna 180/185s and they were cleared to land. I was almost over the water and a called, "tower, do you have 43G?" He said he didn't see me, so I said I was number 4 in the flight of 3. He cleared me to land!

My arrival at 4:08!

At about 9:42, you can watch the idiot who landed the wrong way, against traffic, without talking to the tower!

^9:42 is scary ****! Glad it didn’t turn into a tragedy. Was any action taken?

TSTS4 lands at about 2:00 and does a drive by shortly after. White/Blue RV-10.

I’m 2 min ahead of you— my bounce in all its glory! Then you get to see me again taxi past in the grass on our way to HBP.

I know they went to talk to him. I'm sure somone has the tower audio of them telling planes to go around. It was dangerous, but handled very well by ATC.

Got our room booked. It’s the hall bedroom at my wife’s cousin’s house, two miles from KOSH. I think we’ll camp a couple nights.

I"d have given him two options to leave with his plane, though I know EAA didn't have the ability to enforce either:

1) Stay till after the show and take the 709 ride you so richly deserve.
2) Leave whenever you want, but only with a CFI or ferry pilot acting as PIC.

What is "Prison Arrival" ?
It's an arrival from the north; no longer published but occasionally they will let you in that way if you ask for it. Often used for photo flights that we can only get together at Osh.

I think it was basically the tenet arrival, gets used for other sorta admin purposes, which makes sense.

Yeah we use it for EAA photo missions. There is a prison just north of the field and we report 'over the prison'.

Don't think it was ever published. It's a "those who can use it, know how it's done."

Years ago, when I used to arrive for the first time on the first day the NOTAM was in effect, I'd listen in on the tower frequency and see if it sounded busy. If it wasn't, I'd just call in and inquire "Are we doing the RIPON thing yet?" and they would say "Yeah, but you can fly straight in for 36L if you like."

I think Greg was the first photog that I toted around that told me about it. He has a spot up northwest of the field he likes to use for shoots.
Most photographers have been told not to try to use it. The tower has a list of n-numbers and turns them away.

I've never been asked for my n-number when using it; but I only use it when I'm doing photo shoots. I suppose YMMV...

Yeah, they aren't asking for it, but they are checking it on ADSB. We actually had people using EAA's callsign for our photoships. That didn't go over well! Some of those guys are getting close to being banned.

My 5 year old grandson is still talking about Oshkosh. In addition to all the cool airplanes and what not, his great memories and what he brags about to his 3 year old brother is ...... staying in the UWO college dorms and eating at the college cafeteria. So win win I guess, and that's where we'll be staying again in 2027.
