Oshkosh 2027

The 5 times I've flown into AirVenture via FISK have all put me on runway 27. Even when the wind was 180@11, G17! That was a HUGE pucker factor in a taildragger. I'd love a chance to land on another runway, but don't know if I'll ever make the flight again. Thunderstorms and forest fires have made the trip challenging at best that time of year.

Unless it's crazy busy, you can usually request the other active runway and get it. I like to go in early and they almost always ask me which runway I want. 36 works for me since I park in Vintage.

Years ago when I was out at Fisk we sat out guessing types with the controllers (who would use them to ask "Berkut Rock your wings"). They were trying to send later model stuff and vintage south. Homebuilts can kind of split the difference these days. Back then they tried to put them south as well (campers camped in with Vintage and the parkers only were on the flight line facing 18-36).

Yeah, I've always arrived when the Conga Line was full and there wasn't time to make a special request. Besides, making 40-50 pilots miserable just so I can be comfortable isn't a decision I will make. If I'd had to, I could have gone around and re-entered the conga line, or just landed someplace else and waited for the pattern to get quiet. I've arrived on the Friday before the show, the Saturday before the show and on Thursday of the show week. All of these morning arrivals had a sky full of planes. Here's the ADS-B picture of my Thursday arrival and that was actually more of a mess than my arrivals before the show. On the Thursday arrival, I had to contend with departing and arriving aircraft!

That sounds like a pretty good setup. The college dorms seem like a solid option, especially if you’re close to the field and don’t have to deal with a long commute every day.

UWO dorms are off field. A school bus shuttle runs every 30 min, about 10 minutes to front gate.

You get quiet at night, running water and a real bed.

I agree! Have stayed at the UWO many times. Appreciated the real bed, roof over my head during a storm, cafeteria on campus with fantastic food and real bathrooms!

Wish I could go, but I'll be in School.
I'll be in school as well - I just take some days off, work with the instructor to see what I can get done before hand, how I can make it up. I can handle missing two days.
