It was fun the first time, but after walking 10 miles the day before I absolutely don't want to be woken up by a recording of a dead man's yodeling. Every morning I'm trying to figure out how to disable the PA.

And there should definitely be a TFR until 8am to stop the damn ultralights from buzzing the campsite.

How else am I gonna get that “I’m missing all of Airventure” feeling that gets my tired lazy butt out of the sack?

I thought it was live. That’s disappointing.

Paul Poberezny started the tradition of warbirds buzzing the grounds at dawn to get everyone up and moving. First time I went, I didn't know it was a deliberate thing. Is the yodeling a weather backup?

Personally, I *LOVE* the ultralights flying around the campsite in the morning. One of my favorite things is popping out of the tent and seeing the ultralights or powered chutes already out and about enjoying the skies. I think I've even written a post on here about how I like it lol.

I also like those loud ass planes with the really distinct engine sounds (T6s?) that start buzzing early. Adds to the atmosphere and makes me want to get my day started.

So you're not getting my vote for the TFR! ;)

It’s cute the first time. Annoying the second time. I want to cut the microphone wire the third.

Even better than live, it's a memorial. Hearing Bill every morning is one of my favorite parts of camping in vintage. So much so that I recorded it a long time ago and it's the ringtone on my phone during July of every year.
I guess Russell Lee didn't work out?

The announcer(s) talk way too much. I think it was Monday when the T-28s were flying, the announcer says “let’s listen to the sound of those engines as they fly by” and then proceeded to talk about the exhaust stacks and how they make it sound.

Maybe for a regular airshow the trivia is interesting, but when most of the crowd are aviators, we know more about the planes than the announcer does and just want to hear the engines.

It might bother me if i hadn't been woken up an hour earlier by the t6's. And an hour before they by the porta-potty cleaners. And an hour before that by the garbage truck.

Why do I camp again?

Oh right, I'm poor.

Try two more beers before you go to sleep. You won't wake up for anything less than a F3 tornado.

Ah, yes, “poor @Jim K ,” forced to camp next to one of his airplanes!

Years ago a line guy and I were plotting to create a calendar with pictures illustrating how airplane camping was accessible to all. The highlight was going to be a Falcon 50 with an underwing tent, a clothesline strung from the air stair railing to the wingtip, and the APU burning from a 55-gallon drum of Cintronella to create a mosquito repellent cloud.

I love all the little things they do in the mornings. Puts a smile on my face every time I think about it. Let's be honest, it's the least annoying thing you will hear through that speaker all day.
OMG yes! I get needing color commentary. But. Yikes.

Didn't bother me at all, I had a bag of disposable harbor freight earplugs I used every night to fall asleep.

Birds, yodeling, airborne weed eaters and winged Harley’s wake you guys up? Hmmm…

I Slept through a maid cleaning my hotel room once. Things got funny when she went to make the bed and found my nekked butt had been there the whole time.

I worked OSH Tower for many years, and one early morning found myself assigned the task of escorting Today Show weatherman Willard Scott as he recorded interviews with various tower folk.

Then he tells me he wants to do a live shot at 7:00am, from next to some airplanes parked near the Brown Arch in front of the (old) tower. I take him and a small crew out there, they choose a spot and setup. I'm the only one that notices the flight line PA system speaker right behind them.

I say nothing.

At 6:59:50, the producer starts counting down, and just as Willard opens his mouth to speak-- the yodeling begins.

Willard handled it pretty well, started doing a little dance. His producer, not so much-- she comes running over to me yelling, "Make it stop!"

I smile, shrug, and say, "Welcome to Oshkosh!"

Good memories.....

I am with you on that. If you don't like airplane noise, then OSH is not the place for you.

We need more options for the poll or a better explanation. Not all of us know what you are talking about.

EDIT: Does 'yodeling' refer to unwanted commentary?

Sorry, we forgot that Eman has never been to Oshkosh.

I've been to Oshkosh 5 times and have never heard the yodeling. Maybe because I wind up camping in the N40, or maybe because I take my hearing aids out when I go to sleep. Either way, it's never been a nuisance to me.

If “unwanted commentary” refers to airshow announcer Danny Clisham, then YES. He’s the worst announcer in the business. He bombarded us with an endless stream of trivia, such as during the Corsair’s performance he made sure we knew what years Black Sheep Squadron aired, what airport they flew from for filming, and how tall Robert Conrad and Pappy Boyington were. And several times he misidentified a maneuver.

Too bad that Rob Reider retired, because he was great, and knew when to let the planes do the talking.

It’s literally yodeling. At 7am some jackwad comes on the intercom yodeling. I’m well awake by then, as are pretty much everyone. They think it’s a “cute” tradition to wake folks up. Some traditions should just die.

Speaking of announcers, this didn't happen at Oshkosh but we had an issue at another airshow. My kid was covering his ears and looking very uncomfortable... which was understandable with all the extremely loud jets doing fly-bys. I got him some hearing protection and he was happy. Then a little later a group decided to leave, opening up a better spot and we moved. My kid got rid of the hearing protection and no longer wanted it- the issue was the loudspeaker we were next to not the jets. I kind of agree with him, they're just annoying.

The yodeling is odd, but after 25+ Oshkosh fly-in's, I've come to accept the yodeling in the morning and the noise from SOS in the evening. Plus the sound of those damned airplanes all day.

It's funny..the first year or two the SOS "music" really bothered me. I had to wear earplugs to sleep. Now, I almost enjoy trying to identify the song they're attempting to play as I drift off.

Is the yodeling loud in other parts of the field? In the N40 you barely hear it over all the other noise. Of course we have 9/27 right there launching and recovering warbirds and jets.

Yeah, flight of T-6's at 0630 taking off 100 yards from your tent is gonna get your attention.

The yodeling is pretty loud in HBC, but I'm generally awake by then. I may still be in the tent reading or something, but I'm almost guaranteed to be awake. The big lights spread around the field and converging on HBC bother me much more. Of course, those lights come in handy when I have to dodge tents and airplanes on the way to the porta-potty at 3 AM.

+1 vote to put a lid on the air show announcers. Forget yodeling and noisy airplanes!
IDK if they get paid by the word or what, but when those announcers go 10 levels deep into random trivia that no human being on earth will ever remember it always makes me think of this clip

I like the way the Red Arrows do it - quick maneuver description before the team arrives at show center, then all quiet (and no music) as the maneuver is performed, then describe the next one as the planes regroup.

Compare that to our jet show teams - you can barely hear the planes over the music and the announcers.

The announcers aren't there for us. They are there for John Q Public, who knows nothing about the big roaring machines above them. It's a monster truck show in the sky, and you gotta feed the crowd enough IQ 100 content to keep 'em from getting bored.

Got back from OSH on Friday. The yodeling was fine.. I was already awake by then anyway. I actually miss it.... I miss waking up with the rising sun at 5:30. Miss poking my head out of my tent and seeing airplanes. Miss the sound of any variety of aircraft engines overhead as I trudge to get my morning coffee and donut at 6:00 at the S40 Red Barn. When we left on Friday after four days at OSH, I thought I would be happy to be in my home, in my own bed instead of sleeping in a tent on the ground. I'm happy to see my family again, but man I miss OSH. :( What an amazing time. I can't wait to go back next year.
