This woman only has three lousy miracles. I understand that two of them was card tricks.

Y'all have it all wrong. She's going to be the half time show. They're going to canonize her. You know, like, shooting her out of a canon. Right??

Is the third the ability to pick up a stack of quarters without using her hands?

Well, at least she didn't have a secret camping lover like the last "Saint."

At least not that we know of.

I don't get it...the FIRST part of this thread. I've been to the Philippines, I know all about the latter part.

Bunch of horseshyte, the writer would much prefer those she rescued remain in the gutter to die a fitting death..... give me a break.

I think the writer would have simply preferred that the donations she received was actually used to care for the poor instead of most of it being sent to the Vatican.

But she never had any desires to care for the poor - she said herself that her mission was conversion, not social work. That's what she signed up to do. So you can't blame her for not looking after the poor - but you shouldn't praise her for it either.

Ask yourself the question - if she was Muslim, but everything else was the same - would you still consider her to be this great person deserving of a Nobel Prize? If some "Mother Tahirah" got $75m per year in donations to look after the poor and instead send $70m of that over to Hezbollah. And then also take stolen money and refuse to return it to the victims? Great person or Grifter?

equating the Vatican and Hezbollah is prolly a stretch...

"History of killing people who don't agree with them but provides social services such as hospitals, schools, feeding the poor and housing the homeless - but mostly only to those who subscribe to the same brand of religion".

Which one am I referring to there?

To be fair, when Christianity was 1500 years old, it was doing stuff much like Islam today. I guess it is an adolescence of religion. So basically in 1400 years we're going to have to keep an eye on Mormons.

Yeah, all those hospitals built, schools built, charities founded and funded, lives made better and saved. It's funny how some of the bad things that have occurred in the church are always perpetrated by people distorting truth to their own views or perversions, like some here, but the Truth always finds a way.

You're talking about Islam, right?

Lol, quit trolling dude.

Not even a troll.

Just pointing out the fact that, while Catholicism has done a lot of good, it's done a helluva lot of bad.

Same as Islam. There are Islamic charities, Islamic schools, Islamic hospitals. Islam has done a lot of good. And a helluva lot of bad.

A lot of people, depending on which 'team' they're on, tend to demonize the other side without taking a long hard look in the mirror.

Actually we probably will never agree, but I'll try, the "bad" was/is perpetrated by individuals who are sociopaths/psychopaths perverting, not following the path. Most are just individuals performing bad deeds and hurting others, some have/had risen to leadership levels and affected many more people. Even so, the number of people harmed, versus the number of people saved is tiny. You can't go anywhere in this country and not be more than 25 miles from a Catholic founded institution that helps or educates people and betters their lives. You can ignore that to make yourself feel better about what you say, or you can be honest.

I'd agree that the bad is perpetrated by individuals. That's true for all religions. I don't think Catholicism is inherently bad. Nor do I think Islam is inherently bad. I just think people of Christian faiths in this country have a relatively myopic view of the world's many religions. There's a propensity here to diminish the good that those other religions have done in their respective regions.

If you're talking about the Crusades, you're talking between 1 million and 3 million people killed, which, at the time, represented 1% of the WORLD'S population. The equivalent now would be what... 74 million?

ircphoenix is correct, historically. And I am Catholic & Italian. Roman Empire? Crusades? In the history books.

I have ignored nothing, nor have I said anything about other religions. I have not "diminish(ed) the good that those other religions have done...". You bring up other religions here and attribute your biases to me, that's how bigoted, untrue statements like those in your first paragraph are justified by you, if you want to discuss this stuff with me, then discuss what I write, not what the voices in your head tell you I'm thinking or I believe.

You blame the crusades on Christians, but ignore the fact that Christians were being brutalized and beheaded in large numbers before they began, nothing is black and white in this world.

I don't get it...the FIRST part of this thread. I've been to the Philippines, I know all about the latter part.

The latter part of this thread is the typical unrelated-to-the-topic p!ssing match that things often degenerate into around here.

The beginning is an offhand reference to Mother Teresa being declared a saint by the Pope, followed by ridicule of the miracles required to qualify as a saint.

As a Protestant of many stripes over the years (I refer to myself as Methobapterian, although that doesnt cover it all), I fail to understand the whole "saint" deal, and can find no reference or standing for it in the Bible. Which to me makes it a Catholic thing, started by someone on their own flight of fancy and perpetuated by others because why? Rather than a Christian thing. But whaddo I know?

Revisionism at its finest.

So you have trouble with reality? Get help.

You are right. Hezbollah needs to get it in gear if they ever want to catch up to the Vatican in the harm done to the world.
I understand you lack perspective. No worries. Just learn to keep quiet.

As a Catholic by upbringing, "ecumenical" in tendencies by choice, and really just an unwashed non-devout in practice (which is to say, cafeteria catholic LOL), I gotta say, the underlined quoted kinda describes Protestantism by proxy, brother. Don't you know this is Shawshank...we ALL innocent here. :D

--break break--

As to MT, I don't find it upsetting in the least that her work was misunderstood and her public image politicized. As a cafeteria catholic, I don't have the moral conflict of feeling like I have to defend every aspect of humanity's abuse of organized religion as somehow invalidating of my interpretation of spirituality. To modify a page from Mark Twain and make it my own: "Don't let organized religion get in the way of your Faith". I don't know why people view life in such binary ways. Life is much more gradated. Constantly tossing out the good in order to highlight the fallibility of humanity, is just politics.
