The shop offered to update the software in both G5s (I brought the mini SD card) but we're not sure what the log entry should be. They installed the G5-AI but the avionics shop installed the G5-HSI along with the 175 many years ago. I really don't want to fly over to the avionics shop (Alamosa is west, over the hills from Denver) for a log entry if the local shop can do it. Any suggestions?

"Updated G5 Display P/N 123456-789 S/N 987654 to software version 8.70 in accordance with Garmin Service Bulletin 26099 Rev A".

That SB also specifies what new documents (revised mainyenance manual and flight manual supplement) must be issued to the owner after the update.

Don't quite follow, why would your current shop believe the previous shop would need to be included for this software upgrade? A simple entry as shown above will meet the requirement. Is there some other issue that concerns the shop on this write up?

One shop doesn't depend on the other. I attempted to explain 2 different shops were involved, with years between the installs. Because the AI doesn't involve connection to any avionics, shop A (my local A&P/IA) was happy to install the G5. The other shop (an avionics specialist) did the other G5 which does connect to avionics (the 175). I'm just checking to see if shop A is allowed to update the software on a G5 that connects to the avionics.

Under what authority does an owner up date software to a G5?

If he will sign it off, you are good in my view.

This is what his A&P will write in the log.

I'd like to make the argument that a software update that can be done without tools should qualify under owner-performed preventative maintenance, but that's a conversation for another time.

These are three separate maintenance tasks, so no connection literally or figuratively. Any mechanic can perform the software update on any applicable equipment regardless of who installed it.

The reason a software update is kept separate from a database update is because an operating software update is classified as a minor alteration and a pilot is not permitted to perform alterations.

While the FAA allows update to RNAV nav data, they don’t allow you to change the RNAVs software. Even if the FAA was cool with it, most avionics manufacturers wouldn’t be.

The owner of a certified version of the G5 cannot update the software (legally) which is why I asked about the shop doing it. Makes no sense, really, if I provide the sim card for them to install in the G5, push the button to do the install then hand me the sim card. Then they write the entry in the log book (for which I pay $135/hr)

Red flag for me if an A&P does not know how to log the work performed properly

I'd look to another shop to be honest. Updating the software might cause some unplanned side effects, such as reverting your configurations to default. If your current shop is unsure how to log it, sounds like they may not have the experience to sort things out after the update should any sorting be necessary.

I did not read all the comments but suggest you email Depot and ask for the sign off to be sent to you via mail. They could send you a signed label to be place in your logbook.

Except Depot didn't do the HSI & 175 install, AATG at Greeley did them. I've been back & forth with AATG to schedule additional work and will have them do the updates at the same time.
