I’m contemplating using 06c as my airport since its closer to my conference than KDPA.

MY QUESTION: how accommodating is Chicago clearance at getting one going when you phone them up? I need to depart Saturday evening and I want to be able to scoot if the predicted thunderstorms start popping up around 6-7pm that day. I am keen to avoid sitting on hold for 30 minutes while they deal with the big jets at ohare.

I can’t answer for that airspace, but my overall impression (first learned on one of my student solo cross countries) is that the more significant the weather, the busier ATC gets, and the more difficult it becomes to fit someone in.

There is a comment on ForeFlight that says IFR departure isn’t available if ORD is landing east. There are no Approaches or Departure Procedures there. My guess is it’s not going to be easy to get a Clearance off the ground even if they are landing West. Here’s some phone numbers to try to get your question answered.

I am based at 3CK, if you are going west and can depart VFR, do so and pick it up in the air. I usually have no trouble doing that when going westbound but sometimes I will wait until near Rockford and call up Rockford approach and get it from them, great controllers out there.

They are not cooperative. At All. Concur with Hypie....or go to DuPage and get a car.

There are some real planes based there, but as another person noted no procedures.

I always treated it as a VFR airport and flew approaches into DPA when weather was no good.

Also, not a great airport to be parked at during weather either.
100%.

Sometimes the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

Spot on. IFR departures out of 06C are in the "science experiment" category - yes, they've happened occasionally, and no, I would not count on getting one from a practical perspective. In bad weather, more likely you'd have to scud-run to the west towards DPA (or just north of DPA) and expect a clearance in the air.
