Natural spin off from the sterilized runway thread, I think...

I'll start: Closing threads about airport costs... that was downright weird to see that one closed.

Although we do have the "large breasts" thread still. That one is ok. Hahaha.

Have an artificial intelligence algorithm review the response and filter it if it adds no value. (examples, ask your cfi, google it, pull the red handle(actually that one can have comedic value but its kind of getting played out) etc.)
Or, Low tech approach: Have a verification checkbox that you have to check each time:
X I have reviewed my response and deem that it adds value to this thread.

Good observation. Here's my take.

Debauchery, rudeness, vulgarity = Acceptable ROC

Conservative, principled viewpoints = Unacceptable ROC

Hahaha now we are going to get this thread closed for that. See how you are? LOL...

When I read the thread title I was sure BrYan (6PC0 was at it again. :D

Just trying to keep up with him. Upping my game, they say... right @SixPapaCharlie ?

I mean heck, if I knew I could get banned from AOPA just by posting a photo of truck nuts on a Cirrus -- which in hindsight should have been obvious considering the income stream and full page ads -- like B-man... I'd have done that years ago!

Well, back when I had a membership anyway... to AOPA that is... not the Red Board. I don't think I ever spent any time on the Red Board.

But truck nuts on a Cirrus? That's pure genius right there. And I don't even think Bryan made the photoshop. He just passed it along.

Heck, the thread I started about signs got closed as well and there was nothing really objectionable in it. My OP was a serious question about spending large sums of money on signs to honor people. I just don't get it.

That was the thread I was referring to, that surprised me.

About the only thing I saw in it that didn't meet the "PC-ness" standard was someone's comment about Caitlyn the Great, which didn't seem enough to stop the thread, really.

Delete it and warning to the terrible person making the same jokes one sees on Fallon, perhaps, and more than once a day on Comedy Central, but I'm not sure what was wrong with the thread.

Oh well. Keeping up with the new PC Rule Of The Day in our society is always entertaining. I named my fantasy football team the "Harambe Hunters", and it almost needs a change now, since nobody knows Harambe anymore... heh.

The cost to everyone of signage at major airports seemed like a topic well within the things "Pilots of America" would talk about, and other airport funding shenanigans. It's essily been one of the main focuses of the threads on the Californians trying to close or restrict their airports, and those weren't closed.

Weird.

Just a FYI. You aren't necessarily going to be able to tell why a thread was closed by looking at the remaining posts. More often than not, if a poster gets a warning, their post and ones that quoted it are deleted. For the same reason, you are often not going to find the posts that point to the reason some member is banned.

That's a nice way not to have any accountability for closures and banning.

That makes sense. But if you delete the offending posts and punish the offender, why close the thread?

Frankly, we have tried to allow some discussions of particular sensitive subjects, but the same thing always happens, the thread descends into ranting by both sides. Asking nicely for it to stop doesn't help. I have tried. It doesn't help that some people enjoy starting threads that try to cleverly skirt the Hangar Talk rule that says.

NOTE: Politics and religion and any other topic likely to become highly charged are not allowed, and threads may be deleted or closed if they start or trend, respectively, towards "spin" topics.

None of the mods enjoys spending their time with this problem. We have lives outside of POA. So if closing a thread is easier than monitoring it...

I've already been sterilized. Snip snip! Or maybe it was snip. I dunno, it was a damn Navy Doctor anyway. At least he had me laughing the whole time.

When I get banned for inappropriate boobie comments, please at least allow me to say goodbye to my friends. That would be appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Yeah, I've been snipped as well. Some folks I know think it was a good thing. Something about some people should not be allowed to reproduce. Not sure what that is about.

Post closures and member banning aren't really the same thing. ??? (Even if the member who started the post was the one banned, the thread seems disconnected from that.)

I mean the airport closure thread or the SFO guy suing over small aircraft use of a major airport are by far much much more political than the sign thing but they're allowed...?

Like I said... weird.

Thinking about it further, I think some folks got convinced that politics caused fights (that they often lost) when really some people just fight on any topic.

Well any topic except boobies anyway. ;) And Harambe.

But seriously, if the MC wants no politics but also admits they can't possibly monitor everything in this no-politics utopia -- I'm not sure that's not utterly broken right from the get-go.

Let's say a real politician shows up and says, "Vote for me. My platform is free airplanes for everyone!" Insta-ban? Closure of thread? Can't have politics, you know... hahaha.

(That's essentially what the California airport thread is, really. It could just as accurately have been titled, "Support the politicians who want to keep the airport." And what, over

Methinks the rule is not the only rule being applied, it's just convenient to point to it when someone deems a thread wrong.

Plus its all so subjective anyway. Saying "I like tacos" is political these days, because the politicians want it to be.

Wasn't that long ago someone could make a joke about destroying classified data to cover one's butt or sending the IRS after someone and it wasn't considered political at all, it was just kinda funny.

Right up until that stuff became real and done by a politician.

I think someone needs to go invite Imhofe to PoA. Hahaha. If a real pilot-politician started campaigning here I think I'd wet my pants laughing at all of the assumptions about politics being the root cause of problems here -- well there's another assumption that there ever was a problem -- making some people's heads explode. Haha.

I'm more/less happy we can't discuss politics, especially this year where there are only things to be angry about and nothing positive in sight.

That the thing. Nobody was ever *required* to discuss or read *anything* here. They engaged and then whined that they did.

Nate, it isn't politics per se. It's the fact that the subject of politics (also religion and some other subjects) gets people riled up pretty quick. That's why they are off limits. As I said, we have tried to allow some discussion of controversial topics in the past but the threads always go off the rails. When there are opposing sides, the posts end up being virtual high-fives to those slamming the other side, or heated exchanges between the two sides. Neither type of post solves anything or convinces the person with the opposing opinion to change their mind.

That said, if people want to engage in that type of discussion, there are plenty of places all over the internet where they can do so.

So essentially the PC crowd saying "I don't want to ever be grumpy, sad, angry, or otherwise bothered by anything". I get it. It's popular these days.

But the rule says politics. Not "I'm not an adult so I need a safe space created for me". Which is essentially what volunteer adults are doing but have admitted they don't have the time to do, nor like to do.

Why you guys would even volunteer to do it, I have no idea. It's the Internet and everyone has a scroll button. You've all already admitted it isn't fun nor can you do it properly and fully. It might just be me, but I wouldn't make that my hobby. Haha.

We would like POA to be a pleasant place to come, not filled with a bunch of ranting people which is what it would become with no moderation. The trick is finding the "right" amount of moderation. But that is difficult. I know your viewpoint is "anything goes" and people can skip past posts they don't want to read. But why should people have to tolerate that if they don't want to do so? There are plenty of other sites where the ranters can rant.

I'm curious as to why ranting would fit the criteria for creating an unpleasant environment, but crude talk and borderline pornographic pictures wouldn't? I have a guess as to why, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Uh oh there go the boobie pics and talk.... :(

If you think the images that exist now are crude, you should know that the images the MC thought were inappropriate were worse and are already deleted. The people who posted them know who they are.

Oh I know, this discussion more/less happens on just about every internet forum and always will. You're right that nobody is required to do a darn thing here, but human nature being what it is we are curious and are compelled to read what others said. Then it gets us angry and we end up sitting up all night writing screeds that will change no-one's mind. Or, worse people start to hate each other and the argument gets drug out into every single discussion. Politics are always contentious and we all feel we have a personal stake in it.... probably less of one than we think but that is the point of politics after all. I care about it and that's the real problem, it's aggravating, frustrating, and my personal stake in it all makes it constantly compelling.

I've seen other online communities ripped apart or just made miserable places to be because of politics... it can end up infecting and tainting everything. There are limitless places to go to join in or read about the constant clash. It's nice to have some refuges from it.

My view is far from "anything goes". I just think the topics on the Internet are pretty tame compared to what I've seen people in *actual* fights over. More of a "You don't know what I've seen", kinda thing.

People from the 'burbs on the Internet are kinda pansies. I mean seriously, they get ruffled about gorillas being shot to save kids. Or politics. Or boobies. No sense of proportion or context at all.

Then they go whine to people crazy enough to be "moderators" to save them from themselves and their computer screens. I was a moderator for a loooooong time. But I tended toward asking if they could have just ignored someone and excercised their scroll wheel, before getting involved. Saved a lot of time and hassle.

If they couldn't do that, frankly on those boards we tended not to think they had the skillset to engage in online discussions anyway, which was something we didn't want -- people who couldn't handle their own affairs.

They were engineering-related boards and outside of about three geniuses, nobody had all the answers anyway, and we all knew it. Including the mods. We didn't pretend that we were going to make the playground safe for noobs. Nobody has time for that.

But I'm impressed that you guys try. Honestly. It's literally an impossible job. It's not just tilting at windmills online, it's more like trying to pee upwind into a jet engine at takeoff thrust. Haha. Probably worse than back then when people didn't expect others to protect them all the time and the Net was new and new folks treaded pretty lightly just because they barely knew how to type. Haha.

Sure people can ignore posts, but haven't you noticed that the ranting feeds on itself? Additional people join in and the posts become more outrageous. Then the people who are ignoring the posts start ignoring the whole board and stop coming. You can call them "pansies" if you want, but why should they come here when there's too much chaff to pick through to get to the wheat?

Uh oh there go the boobie pics and talk.... :(
Let me assure you, there is no shortage of boobie pictures on the internet. But, I was only looking for the logic behind the criteria. I'm not as easily offended as many others obviously are.

Oh, no they're not. This was earlier this week...

http://reason.com/blog/2016/09/26/clemson-university-bans-students-from-ma

(And no, I don't want to roust the political gods and godesses, just pointing out that the fame lives)

How DO you find that stuff, Bill?! Oh man I'm sitting here laughing and crying at the same time.

Our vaulted "halls of higher education" are quite a source of endless amusement these days, eh?

Of course the Che and Castro t-shirts are always in style there. No bans on those. :)

By the way Bill, I'm "offended" at your photo of your airplane in your profile. Just because I feel like being so!

Maybe someday I can hitch a ride in it and I'll stop being offended. Hahaha.

Damn airplane photos EVERYWHERE here! Doesn't anyone realize airplanes made me BROKE and therefore airplane photos are a trigger for me?! Sheesh.

So mean, the Internet! Damn it PoA!!!!

;)
