How do you get adsb traffic on android?

Went to the airport today and got in the airplane and realized I forgot to bring my iPad with me.

So I started looking for efb apps for android. And I couldn't find a way to connect any of them to my Stratus transponder or my Stratus 2s.

What's the trick?

Don't know nothing about stratus. Wasn't the stratus an iPad only thingy?

I run Avare on a android tablet with a Dynon DRX ads-b receiver connected by WiFi.

You'd forget your sunglasses too if you weren't sponsored by them.

iFly EFB will run on Android and display ADSB traffic. You do have to switch the Stratus to "Open ADSB" mode using the Stratus Horizon app, and that might be the difficulty you're having. Otherwise it will only talk to iCrap.

I ended up with FltPlan Go last time I did that and before jumping to iOS.

Not a fan, but... it did the thing on the tin and was free.

I have

Hahaha!!!!

Never been in a flying eyes ad!!
I would never sell my soul to the man for a quick buck.

There's this guy that looks like me though... He's a handsome devil.

He sure is. I hope for his sake he never has to shave that facial hair though.

I used a stratux on Android with iFly and a free efb...avare? Garmin pilot on Android works with the stratus in the Cessna. I think it might be a 3? It's hardwired in, so I can't remember.

Avare will work with a Stratus.
The problem is Foreflight does a d!@k move and switches it to the proprietary mode every time it connects.

So you need to download an app called ADS-B Monitor, looks like this:

Switch the Stratus from FF Mode to Opeb Mode and you're all set.
But... FF users can't conect to it anymore as long as you're connected.

Its the apple mindset

garmin pilot + some form of ADSB-IN device transponder/gdl50/stratus3+/others.... the stratus prior to 3 were foreflight only

I've been using Garmin Pilot for planning. Is there any kind of receiver that isn't like $600 that it can connect to?

you should be able to build a stratux
Huh, I'm not familiar. Where do I find schematics/tutorial for that? I'm comfortable with sourcing and soldering basic electronics components if that's what's required.

Advice is worth what one pays for it, but put the Stratux idea out of your head is my advice. I messed with those for months. Built my own, bought a crew dog version premade, etc. After fussing about it not working time and again, after working on it time and again, after trying to fix it time and again, I say never again.

I felt like that for a while, but once I got it sorted out, it has been reliable. Recently I started having issues with a 3 year old unit, and was able to fix by downloading and flashing the latest software version. Mine is mounted under the panel with remote antennas and GPS puck, so no overheating issues, and hardwired to ships power so no battery to worry about. I think it is no worse than any other portable option, and easier to configure to your preference.

To quote post #16 from the above thread: It's a rare Stratux build indeed that does not need ever need fiddling.

If @Baked Potato is running Garmin pilot, I would just get a GDL39 variant.

The Dynon DRX just works, every time, automatically without fussing. Problem is they stopped selling them. One needs to keep an eye out to find one second hand.

I think it’s been fixed now, but earlier Stratux units had a problem with memory being corrupted if you just pulled power without commanding a shutdown first.

ok, guilty as charged. I just wanted to leave it in the plane and power on / off with the master.

Built four of them (two for me, two for friends), all have been working well for years.
But I use good power supplies for them, I'm sure that helps.

Also, the software loves/loved filling the card with log files, filling/corrupting the card. Once that's disabled everything is good. I haven't touched the primary one in years, it probably has 500+ hours of flight time on it with no issues.

o know if it’s an actual app but iFly EFB works with Stratus (only) and Android.

Wow, this is the App I wrote some years ago. I am glad to see someone referencing it. Unfortunately, Google Playstore took it down because I am not actively publishing new apps, so the account is now deleted. If anyone has an interest, I can post the apk somewhere.

We used Stratux in the RVs for several years with minimal problems. After the recent panel upgrade in the -10, it now broadcasts a signal we can both connect to (dad with FF and me with Avare) for traffic display, so the RPi Stratux is probably on a shelf somewhere.

The specific Stratux programming issue related to log files was fixed years ago. However, since the RPi does not have a hardware shutdown, there is still a general risk of corruption to the SD card or RAM from repeatedly cutting power. Plus I think SD cards are just inherently less stable than ROM. IMO buying a new SD card and reflashing once a year is probably good owner PM.

I haven't kept up with the Stratux architecture recently, but the latest RPi model (5) has a PCIe connection, so you can actually install a SSD (via a M2 hat) and boot directly from that, rather that relying on a SD card. I'm tinkering with a RPi5 with some AI image detection stuff and they mention that the constant read/write rate inherent with real-time AI evaluation is hard on SD cards and that going the SSD route is more long-term stable. It'll be interesting to see if Stratux goes that way in the future.

ETA: Too bad 6PC is an airline guy and doesn't understand all this technical IT talk anymore...

Definitely a useful app, and it still has a place in the aviation community.

Can you attach it to a post in this thread? I think ZIP files are allowed.

I was able to download "ADS-B Monitor" from APKPure and just had to open it and it installed.
Probably had to have developer mode enabled or something, I'm running a custom ROM so not sure what it might be like on a more 'controlled' device.
Now, how and whether it will work remains to be seen.

Tried it out yesterday and it worked fine. As stated, this is a custom Android ROM, running Android 11 ("Red Velvet Cake"). I was using a Stratus 3 and running AvareX EFB.
Glad after all this time, it still works!

I upgraded the code for SDK 36. The source code and the apk are on github now, so anyone can access it. https://github.com/asarangan/ADSB_Monitor2

This great, thanks!
Its nice to have something like this so I dont have to constantly be switching the stratus to open mode every time and messing with my other partners who are all using Foreflight.
