I’ve flown into Hawthorne a bunch of times to drop off/pick up people taking flights out of LAX. I wonder what the implications will be for GA.

They claim it will be a “Strategic Air Taxi Network Hub and AI Testbed” whatever that means.

If anyone is interested in buying the airport here in Gallup, let me know and we will work out a price....

Well the entire existence of that airport is GA so I don't think there will be any significant impact towards GA.

Except the rents going up... there are a lot of other aviation related business there.

The main businesses at Hawthorne Airport (Jack Northrop Field) in California include major aerospace and aviation companies, particularly SpaceX, The Boring Company, and Tesla Design Studio, which all maintain facilities on the airport grounds. Archer Aviation recently acquired the airport to establish it as a hub for planned electric air taxi operations. Other key businesses operating at the airport are Jet Center Los Angeles (the primary fixed-base operator, handling fuel, lounge, and other aviation services) and Star Helicopters, which provides helicopter services on-site.

My 99% prediction: The air taxi will fail, and the property will be bought by real estate developers.

It's my understanding Archer is only leasing a majority of the airport due to their partnership with the Olympic games in LA. I think it's a bit premature since they are a Phase behind Joby in the eVTOL certification process.

I guess they couldn't pass up the PR value of being an official Olympic partner. However, flying with those 5 rings on the side of the aircraft isn't cheap. Regardless, Joby will also be flying at the Olympics so it will be interesting if this was a smart move on Archers part.

With all of the cash being dumped into urban air mobility may as well grab it while it's flowing. My sleepy little county airport got five huge new hangars and while they remain mostly under utilized at least they are there.

All GA. Just billionaire's GA and not millionaire's GA

Hawthorn was one of the airports we used during my instrument training.. sometimes when doing the approach you're wing to wing with an A380 of your right side for a few seconds, pretty cool, and good training as ATC had no tolerance for Gomers. Getting the clearance out of HHR was rather tricky while watching the Hobb's meter turn minutes into hours. Again you proximity to LAX, LGB, and SNA really tied things up on a snotty day.

I have a feeling that Jack's airport was weaning away from bug squashers for a long time now.

The "beep" you money people have preferred KVNY and KLGB, and are now moving to KCMA which I have mixed feeling about.

“Archer’s Midnight aircraft, which the company said is “designed to replace long, traffic-congested car trips with safe, quiet electric air taxi flights” will likely cost passengers between $3 and $4 per passenger mile, according to Autofutures. The aircraft are still in testing and have not yet been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration for commercial air travel. ”

That price sounds unlikely. But what really surprises me is leasing a whole airport for that purpose when the aircraft isn’t even certified.

Two and a half years until the Olympics. Makes sense to start getting the infrastructure locked in. Somebody is making a big roll of the dice on flight testing and certification proceeding without hiccups. Although compared with the speculative bets on crypto and AI, this is pocket change.
