Ginger or MaryAnn? Ariel or Amelia?

You know you're getting old when....

I was at a meeting last night and this came up as a side discussion. Half the guys there didn't understand "Ginger or MaryAnn".

*sigh*
Okay, no one else is saying it, so I will. It ain't "Ginger" and MaryAnn" but "Leslie", "Blanche", "Diana", "Jeanie", "Mari", and MANY MORE (Yes, I can name many more, but need to stop now before I get in trouble again! :) ) of the Beautiful, Intelligent PILOT babes here on PoA.

And, to inject a note of seriousness, may I comment on the loss of Barbara "Moxie" Brinck, a founder of Babes and Airplanes. She will always be missed!

Edit: Okay, so I thought that Diana and Mari had commented on this thread, but they were apparently too intelligent, or at least reticent, to do so.)

We're males.

Society has stripped us of our *real* male answer to these hypothetical "which one" questions...

"Yes."

Which is a very Good Thing(TM) in the long run.

The proliferation of "Daily Cialis" commercials on the AM radio and CNBC lately is just wrong somehow.

You're listening to Market reports in your car and some d-bag comes on telling you how he's "always ready to go when the time is right".

Great. Good for you. Keep it to yourself. Sheesh.

Lately the XM radio is innundated with AdamAndEve.com commercials too. Really? Thanks. Always looking for that kind of info while driving.

Fills in that information I was so worried I wouldn't find anywhere else. Haha. Thanks so much for that during lunch hour, driving to grab some Pho or a salad, oh great advertising execs.

Mix in the Lizard selling overpriced insurance and my lunchtime drive is complete. "Yeah, yeah. Warren Buffet needs the cash," I usually tell the Lizard.

No wonder I usually fire up a podcast. At least there I only get told how wonderful GoToMyPC is for the ten-millionth time.

"Yeah, yeah... VNC is free, but at least Citrix is paying for Leo to distribute MacBreak Weekly!"

I talk to my radio. Yes. I do.

Wait, almost forgot the never-ending stream of "debt consolidation", "income tax negotiation", and "we'll help you file bankruptcy" ads.

Those are a sign of a great nation's economy right there, let me tell ya!

Sex drugs, car insurance, and free loans. Must be the American way! It's on the radio!

Sorry. Rant mode off now. ;)

Statistically, we're about 94% male. A significant portion of us are "married" and want to stay that way. I'll leave it there for now...

Huh? My comment is two above yours and the person who started the thread is one of the people you mentioned.

I keep the radion on KUVO or KCPR, both NPR stations but KUVO is jazz all the time with news highlights at the top of the hour. Definitely keeps the stress levels down.

That reminds me - I enjoyed how Mike, Servo, and Crow react in this MST3K riff:

Sure. And with society the way it is, good luck attempting to reach out to any of them trying to propose a coffee date. So fantasy is what's left to us single (or in my case, divorced) males. Heck, the one time I tried to just make a friend - no other intent whatsoever - with one of these admittedly wonderful gals who lives a 15 minute drive away from me, she immediately suspected me of having "nefarious intentions" and never let go of that impression, regardless of how vehemently I denied such.

But yes, wouldn't it be nice to find a pilot!

Onwards, I expect that you should not blame yourself for a lady reacting that way. I expect that they are getting hit on so often that it's difficult for them to understand how anyone could have any other intentions. Very sad, but I think that's the way of the world. I've been married 37 years, but it was pretty much that way even way back in the dark ages when I was a young Tom Cat.

Just be lucky you hadn't smiled at a kid. All men are predators, ya know.

Yeah, that.

I ALWAYS smile at little kids, and usually interact with them if in line or whatever, just like I had always done with my own when they were at that younger age. Usually that's just fine, but ever so often, I get "the look" from a mom how hurriedly forces her son or daughter to disengage. Kinda sad, really.

We haven't met, but based on what I see on POA, I'll make the accusation. You have to be intelligent to fly the way you apparantly do. :D

You have to post about this ONLINE???

Look, I was concerned about your flying related posts. I knew if we became friends you would want to fly together and I was not sure how comfortable I would be. I can't believe you had to publicly write about me on here and complain. I am not 15 minutes away either!

Did I name you, Kim? you're the only one who could have made that link before you responded publicly :)

EDIT: moderator, I would make a plea to remove both Kim's replies and mine to hers.

Well, in this case Kimberly, you're the one who let the cat out of the bag, as far as I'm concerned. I figured there were lots of pilots in CA. I never would have made the connection otherwise.

Pfft. Those of us who know you, know you.

I'll just say that I've met several of the women on this aviation board and others, and so far the signal-to-noise ratio is 100% signal, no noise. And even among the guys I'd put it at 94% or so, which is MUCH better than among all the guys I know in general.

So, being a guy pilot makes you better than other guys. Being a girl pilot makes you better than pretty much everybody.

I'll say.

Having by now met several girl pilots - not to mention the one I personally pushed over the threshold into becoming a student pilot (check my mountain flying post, she took those pictures) - I will emphatically agree with you.

Guys, Ariel is like 5 foot nothing and 110 pounds, and we know in spite of her bubbly personality there's not much else up there. :ihih:

Diff'rnt Strokes, I guess.

I suspect she laughs at that statement all the way to the bank. :wink2:

Yes, that is very sad. I'm old enough that I've seen massive societal changes. I feel like I was raised as a childl on Mars and now live on Venus.

Well I just want to say that I just randomly watched flying alaska and I think Ariel is the cutest girl out there, and the fact that she can fly too is just awesome. Im not a Pilot or anything I just wanted to throw that out there in hopes that she is reading some of these posts... I guess I could say that I have a little crush..

Who is Ariel? The little mermaid? I'm lost

Aerial is the daughter of the owner of ERA Alasaka, an Alaskan airline featured in a TV reality show "Flying Wild Alaska" on Discovery Channel (I think.) She's cute as a button, and sweet as she can be, but most see her as ditzy.

She's a college student in Souther California, but a key character in the TV show that they film in the Summer.

She seems to be either really liked by someone or really defected, there seems to be no middle ground. I'm in the like category. I think she's cute and sweet. She is not liked by many here due to her antics in the air. She finally solo'd at the end of last seasons series. I doubt that anyone will ever accuse her of being a natural born pilot. Her motivation to learn to fly is that everyone else in her family is a pilot.

In her defense. They started giving her lessons in a 210 and when she got in the little 150 she did a few crazy things in the course of getting used to the light plane. The editing of the show takes advantage of this by trying to dramatize it and make her look bad IMHO.

Do what I did. Meet a amazing girl and marry her. Go get your PPL together. Now you're married to a pilot.

We just got this vanity plate: "2 P1LOTS" :D

Not sure I'd want to be married to a pilot. I'm already married to a driver and that is bad enough. ;)

ahahahaha i was wondering when this would ever be useful. But it clearly is here....

Thanks for the pics Kim!

There's no accounting for taste, and they are all, including the young lady that posted the pics, as cute as they can be.

As far as Amelia goes, I foresee something happening in the future that may very well be like Charles Lindbergh's Grandsons flight. Some years ago Charles Lindbergh's Grandson was set up in a very modern, specially prepared plane to duplicate his Grandfathers flight. He had all imaginable modern technology including constant radio contact with his home base throughout the entire flight.

What the Grandson did was an impressive accomplishment. Flying across an ocean in a small plane even today is nothing to be scoffed at. That said, I think that there were some people that put the Grandsons accomplishment in the same category as Lindbergh's original flight. For me there is ABSOLUTELY no comparison.

I can see this young Amelia being set up for the same kind of thing. If she pulls it off, I will be extremely impressed. I will also be very disappointed in those who equate it to the kind of flying that was done by her names sake. Seventy years of improved technology puts such an accomplishment in a much different league.

Just sayin'

I've seen Lindbergh's plane (the new one), both here in the PNW at PWT and at Sun-n-Fun a number of years ago. Got to talk with him in Florida and he strikes me as a nice guy.

Seww.. She's flying a someone elses' new SR22 from California to Florida with a CFII on board? I'm about to fly my 50 year old cherokee solo about that far?... Just looked out the window, no news team here yet. I'm calling it "vacation" not "accomplishment" maybe that's why nobody is here to get my story.

It may well be an accomplishment for Amelia where as for you and most folks around here it'd just be another day. Ya just never know.

She has every intent on duplicating the Original Amelia's flight around the world in an SR22 with all possible navigation equipment (G1000, etc) in 2015. She's still working on her instrument, by the way.

I wish I had the financial support she's got for this (say it softly) PR event.
