Impressive the aircraft didn’t come apart besides the visible rudder damage. Wonder what their Mach got up to.

Make it 8888.

I do wonder if the initial speculations of an intended 9/11-style attack directed at Tel Aviv have any merit.
Well, if so, gonna guess the perp doesn't care that Israel just reinstated the death penalty.

The life of everyone on board depends upon just one thing: finding someone back there who can not only fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner or get stabbed by the first officer.
Surely all modern jets have one of these now?

Captain reported to be Emirati, and victim of knife attack.
First officer, Omani, and had knife.
Dead heading pilots:
One Russian.
One Ukrainian.
There were also some Israeli civilians who feared cuts much less than a crash.

Yes, Todd Beamer set a standard for taking action regardless of your personal outcome.

Maybe we need an additional emergency squawk code. 7800 = knife fight in cockpit.
Probably 7400 at engine start and prior to push = My co-pilot seems unhinged

I can't believe this guy got all the way to ATP level without someone noticing something "a little off"

Maybe all pilots and crews need full body cavity searches for each flight now.

You would think the airlines would add some back door Autoland software they can activate remotely.

Personally I like "8008"

The Omani may have been a normal pilot until something in the recent events flipped his awareness of political and military issues.

He may even have made a decision during this flight

Software can't do it. Still need someone on the flight deck to get the airplane onto the ILS at the right altitude, airspeed, configuration, and to setup the autoland. Then, at least with a 737, it isn't going to stay on the runway without help.

How does the pax get into the cockpit to fight knife wielding FO?
He told Ben N. that the captain got the door open before collapsing. Said they had a tough time pushing it open because the captain was inside the door on the floor. I read one of the deadheading pilots was British.

So much for the idea of impenetrable doors. Wonder what the next solution will be. Thank God he got it open.

Maybe as currently implemented in commercial airplanes, but unmanned airplanes definitely can do a more difficult landing task than a field ILS.

Note that I'm saying that they CAN, not that they SHOULD...yet. ;)

"The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it 'tis to stop up the drains."

Hacking a remote control routine is probably easier than subverting a pilot. Plus, such a routine will probably be designed to NOT allow onboard people to override it....

FlyDubai operates the 737. The cockpit door on 737s opens out, not in.

Maybe as currently implemented in commercial airplanes
My comment was in the context of the quote to which I was replying.

737-Max descended 17,000 feet in one minute. Flight 93 simulation PASSED

This is what you get when you run non-deterministic wetware in a flight-critical environment.

Nauga,
half-joking
They must have forgotten the dog.
