I will be having a Dynon Skyview HDX system installed in the Fall. Right now I have dual Garmin G5s installed. The Dynon STC requires that I install a Dynon D30 as a backup to the Skyview system.

Is there any reason to keep one or both of the G5s? Ideally I'd sell them to recoup some of the Dynon costs, but if it makes sense to keep one or both for some reason, I'd considering doing that.

I'd appreciate hearing thoughts and comments. Thanks!

Offhand, the only reason I can think of keep one of the G5s is if you have you have a single Dynon and you can configure the G5 as an engine monitor or other external monitoring device.

The Dynon system will have engine monitoring. I'll be removing the existing JPI 830.

No real reason to keep, but if you have one set up as an HSI, you could have a backup HSI.

That would be a reason to keep a G5, but you want it connected to the Dynon as well for auto pilot.

Right now, my AeroCruze 100 can be controlled either by the G5 or the IFD 540, with a toggle switch to change the autopilot control input. Are you suggesting something similar with the G5 and Dynon? If that's the case, do I lose the HSI capability on the G5?

I understand you already have the AeroCruze, but if your plane is a 182F-S, the Dynon auto pilot is much better and is quite reasonable.

I wasn't clear. My bad. I intend to add the Dynon a/p. Can it be controlled either by the Dynon HDX, or switched to the G5?

The Dynon auto pilot will only control through the Dynon, but you can still display the HSI on the G5.

A G5 can be configured as an engine monitor?

Garmin makes a fine engine monitor, the GI275EIS - the jus don’t package it on the G5 screens.

Dynon’s engine monitor as an add on to the HDX was a bargain in my opinion for $2400. Unfortunately, they just raised the prices- but we are still installing them with lots of interest and some people prefer them over Garmin.

No reason to keep the G5’s in my opinion.

Dynon is a huge bang for the buck for customers who don’t have the budget for Brand G. Their autopilot is perfectly functional. We install Dynon, Garmin and Trío.

A couple of questions...

I have the Dynon pricing spreadsheet from April, IIRC. Is that the current pricing?

Can the G5 HSI be configured as a completely stand-alone indicator for the GNC 215?

With reasonable experience with both the Dynon engine monitor and the GI275, I can’t imagine anybody not preferring the Dynon. In my opinion, the Dynon is the best engine monitor on the market. As far as I know, it us the only one that talks to you, verses flashing a light or simply beeping.

April 2026 is the latest pricing calculator…and yes, you can use a 215 with a G5 as an HSI.

We install both - have a Garmin 375 on a 172 being installed with G5’s right now, and a 177 doing a dynon panel as we speak.

Many people who like brand G genuinely prefer a 275 as a better instrument on the panel for slightly more money.

Two GI275’s and you start scratching the price of a full dynon versus a G3X. Installing a G500H on an R44 next week.

I already have a pair of G5s - one as an HSI and the other as an Attitude Indicator. It makes sense to me to keep the HSI as an independent instrument off the 215 as a backup in case the Dynon system malfunctions. With the Dynon backup, it's sort of a belt and suspenders approach to redundancy.

question, why not go with a g3x, you already have most of the system installed by having the 2xg5

Honest answer...I like my Avidyne IFD, and I'm not a fan of the Evil G Empire.
fair enough, avidynes are nice, friend has a 440 connected to his g3x, if i'd had a 430 or 530 installed id have went that way. as for dynon i too was leaning that direction until i had the g5's installed.

Jesse put a full Dynon system in my RV8 with an EvilG 175 GPS. Love the Dynon stuff, wish the new plane was all Dynon.

Might as well sell the G5's and free some panel space. You'll have your primary Dynon as well as a back up Dynon D30.

Can the D30 display nav data from the 215? I'm thinking I want something completely independent from the Skyview system in case of failure.

I don’t know. But if you want a back up, maybe have a back up GPS vs nav radio.

Do you have some installed prices on the skyview system? I find it tempting.

One screen? Two? Three?
In what airplane?
Engine monitoring or not?
ADSB in / transponder and radios or not?
What is it attached to?
Autopilot?
Pricing varies based on the above as a start.
Jesse Saint is conquering the East and we are conquering the west :) feel free to reach out to either of our shops :)
