Dynon Panel Upgrade -- What to Keep?

I'm not sure.
If Dynon STC requires a D30, there must be a reason other than just selling one, but I'm not sure what that is if it's installed as a stand alone unit.
I think it's a safety issue. If the main Dynon system goes out, the D30 is a stand-alone, battery-operated back-up.

As would be the G5. Just wondering why they require the D30 for the STC, or if 'D30' is just the language they use instead of 'stand alone unit'.
Maybe someone can verify one way or the other.

Here's a screenshot of the relevant section of the Dynon ordering spreadsheet. I believe I read somewhere that the D30 is required under the STC, but even if it isn't, Dynon requires that it be purchased as part of the Skyview HDX system.

Pretty sure this is it....

"23.1311 Electronic display instrument systems. (a) (5) For certification for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations, have an independent magnetic direction indicator and either an independent secondary mechanical altimeter, airspeed indicator, and attitude instrument or an electronic display parameters for the altitude, airspeed, and attitude that are independent from the airplane’s primary electrical power system."

Yeah, not debating that there has to be an independent device, I just wondered why Dynon won't allow anything but the D30 to be that device. According to Jesse the only reason they require the D30 is that the STC was approved using a D30. (or maybe originally a D10, then updated). So yes, not an issue if experimental.

Pretty common for alterations done by STC. Dynon has to be very specific with configuration in their application documents. FAA is probably not going to approve an STC with "insert any backup device here" in the drawing. If you do it differently, you are not using approved data. You might need a field approval unless you find another installation path. All of which is irrelevant to EAB, as you observe.

The original Dynon stc required the d10a. They have since sunset the d10a and now offer the d30. I don't have the d30, but the d10 is independent of the hdx.

FAA aside... If you were dynon an knew the FAA was going to require a backup instrument. Why would you say any certified display when you can sell your own instrument as a backup display?

Regarding the G5... Isn't that configurable to where it can be an hsi and no longer a backup pfd.

That was my question. Other than just sales based, was there some technical reason the G5 or other didn't qualify. Just wanted to know for knowledge sake.

I guess in a very rare case if someone was really on the fence between EvilG and Dynon, or budget was really strained, then it could be the tie breaker.
But at 2-3 AMU's not likely, plus selling a used G5 or two isn't that hard I don't imagine.

My main interest is that I soon will be making a decision on what to do with my panel. I've had several suggestions with one friend raving about the AV-30's and another pushing the G5.
So I thought about trying an AV-30 or G5 and if I didn't like it, I might be able to use it as a backup to a Dynon system. And, while at the Dynon booth Oshkosh '24 I saw a few different display configurations where they used backups that were AV-30, G5 and something else, GI275 maybe. I did question two of the reps while there and got two different answers about that. One said yes ok for certified, and one said no. I know who was correct now.

You can keep whatever else is in the panel. But you need the d30 as it's required for the hdx stc.

I suspect it wasn't solely due to sales. But rather just ease of stc approval.
