I noticed DJI announced they were disabling the geofencing capabilities in their drones, obviously to short circuit any future claims of liability.

Is this the first time someone has been sentenced to prison for a drone incident? Two weeks is kind of comical, just enough to get a taste of it.

Glad to see the courts took it seriously. Only blind luck kept it from being a fatal accident, something more drone pilots need to think about.

Two years of probation is a good way to handle it. Do anything that's not kosher and straight to jail. I would've added a prohibition from operating any kind of UAS during that time as well.

For a mid-air I believe it is. However, there have been a few cases for illegal drone flights that resulted in prison time. Ironically, several of which were for flying contraband into a prison. But as the number of illegal drone reports continues to increase, I think pokey time will become more common place.
 
I'm waiting for the first time someone tries to use a drone to ESCAPE from prison. I mean, from google, Squeaky Fromme only weighed about 100 lbs, so the concept is plausible enough that someone should have tried it by now.
 
I remember a a Piper with a newly overhauled engine (maybe in Canada) that had a prop strike on short final. I believe the drone operator was law enforcement.

A lot of these drones are meant to replace crop dusters, as they are far cheaper to run. It means that they can carry quite a few pounds.
