Inspired by a picture in the guillotine thread, I was reminded of a recurring dream I have where I'm dodging power lines and just can't climb over them no matter how much I try. I asked about 10 other pilots if they have this type of dream and about 8 said yes, pretty much identical.

So I was interested and created a poll here. Pretty simple, yes or no, do you have similar dreams. It doesn't have to be powerlines, I suppose it could be buildings, or trying to escape from a tunnel or something, anything that mostly has to do with not being able to outclimb or avoid something above you.

I will say in my dreams I think I am always successful at dodging the wires, I never hit them, but there are always more coming like a video game.

Exactly. I still have these even though I don't fly any more.

I answered no, but I never have any dreams of any sort that have me falling, in danger, being chased, etc...

I used to have these all my life before I got my license. I used to dream I could "fly" without a plane a lot also. Just kind of jump and softly float to the ground more than flying. Don't really have either anymore.

I have the occasional dream where i am departing a rural airport. You know the kind where there is more grass than pavement and the painted markings have long faded into history.

The kicker is that there is a power line running over the runway. Not side to side but lengthwise. No poles, just the line. The procedure is when the tires leave the pavement, make an immediate right turn to get out from under the wire, then climb.

And yes, I am wearing pants in this dream....

I also have dreams where I am watching an airplane crash. Usually an airliner. I have had these dreams since I was a child. Amazing I became a pilot.

I used to have the flying (without a plane) dream all the time, but haven't since I started riding motorcycles oddly. Apparently that was enough to scratch that itch?

I've never had the powerline dream (although I probably will now, thanks)....in mine it's trees. It looks a lot like that video of the Stinson that won't climb and crashes into the trees. Which is probably where my brain got the idea.

It isn't a recurring dream, but I have had a dream where I was flying through a city between tall buildings and having to dodge them. I was having trouble climbing out and was stuck just dodging buildings. At the same time I was thinking "I'm glad this is a dream because this would never work in real life."

When I have “stuck low” dreams, I wake up with a tremendous sense of calm, and wish I knew how to get back into the dream.

In thinking about it, I realize I rarely dream of flying. The few times I do is a nightmare of being trapped in an out of control airplane waiting for the inevitable, like this accident.

My biggest recurring dream is being in school, but not knowing where my class was, or running late, etc. Sadly I've been out of school for 20 years and still get woken up by it. All the amateur Freuds here pick that apart.

For me, there's no identifying the plane, it's just some vague, nondescript airplane.

Yeah, it's strange. Generally I'm down low, don't know why, and figure I'll climb as soon as I get under the wires in front of me. But then there are more wires beyond that and every time I think I can climb, there's something else in the way. For some reason I can't go left or right because of trees, terrain, or buildings, so I'm stuck in this sort of tunnel. Nothing bad ever happens, though, I just keep flying.

A couple months ago, I dreamt I crashed into the side of a building, after what could only be described as the world’s dumbest takeoff. The building came down around me. Woke up really scared. (I think it's the only time I've actually crashed in a dream.)

Have had the one about "looking for openings in a grove of trees" a couple times.
    <shudder>

Back when I was a student pilot (training near Boston), I had a nightmare about falling asleep in the cockpit and waking up at 500 feet over Manhattan. Thought, "Uh-oh, I'm so in trouble."

When I have that kind of dream it's various things, power lines, hills, trees, etc. I normally turn to miss the object but no matter how much time I have, I can never climb out of the "hole" that I'm in. I never remember crashing though. Just seem to circle and never get out.

My recurring flying nightmare is that I am unable to overcome a thermal pushing me up from class delta into class bravo no matter how much I try to push the nose down. I wake up thinking that my flying days are over.

I’ve never had the dodging wires/buildings dream, but I have had several where I’ve seen an airplane crash. Never an airliner as best I can recall. Usually a medium sized aircraft.

I've only had one powerline dream, but they were everywhere no matter where I turned.. and trees too. I have had the airplane crashes dreams, but it's always someone else. Sometimes airliners. One time aliens had taken over and were crashing all the planes with technology.. it was pretty crazy.
Lots of other dreams as mentioned in other posts about partially flying by jumping very high and landing slowly...
But the best ones are being able to fly like Superman.

    Cool thread.

Same. its always an airliner most of the time I am on the ground watching it sometimes more rarely I am in it. Ever since I was small.
What I find interesting is I remember it scaring me silly as a kid and now in the dreams, it doesn't even bother me. I have become desensitized to plane crashes in my dream world it seems.

Usually my flying dreams involve a plane already aloft (not always) and ending in a crash landing of some sort. Often that is just the beginning and then followed by conflict/war stuff.

My flying dreams are never in the singles I fly. Always multi props or jets. So strange.

I also dream in color. Let’s make a poll about that because I’ve read that is a minority experience.

Most of my dreams are indistinguishable from reality.... color and all..... until usually at some point the physics breaks and I realize it's a dream. Often to my great relief.

I have had dreams like that. Good news is I never die in them.

Far more common is dreams where I’ve landed at a big airport and suddenly realize I didn’t have a clearance to do so. Or where I realize I’m in Class Bravo or equivalent, again by accident and without a clearance. The feelings of fear and paranoia in the dreams are quite profound, as is the feeling of relief when I wake up and realize they were just dreams.

Weird that at least in my subconscious I’m more fearful of screwing up than I am of crashing!
