Daily Pic

Rode this baby into Oshkosh the Sunday before Airventure. Logged 1.8 XC and "intro to twins"... And it was so far the awesomest thing I've done flying related.

800 or 800XP?

I worked on those back in the mid-90's when I first started at, then, Raytheon Aircraft in Wichita.

Built like a lead sled - we had pictures of one that had been attacked by a MiG, lost the right engine to a heatseeking missile and had shrapnel damage all over but brought everyone home. Literally looks like it was designed and built by the Electric Boat Company to survive a dive to the bottom of the Marianas Trench.

That was really amazing. Here's one picture.

They were lucky, the second missile followed the departing engine instead of going for the left one.

What's the story behind this? Know what the missile was? Archer? Aphid?

Don't know what kind of missiles were used, but here's the story: On August 8th 1988, President J. K. Quetta Masire and his staff were flying to a meeting in Luanda, Angola. At 35,000 ft, an Angolan Air Force MIG-21 fired two air-to-air missiles at the Hawker 800. The Botswana Chief pilot was incapacitated. A British Aerospace pilot (Arthur Ricketts) was flying right seat. He landed at Cuito Bie, a remote strip just below them. A number of passengers were injured but no fatalities. It's still flying today and for a few years, Beechcraft used the story and photos to promote its structural integrity. I still remember advertisements in BC&A magazine. As mentioned earlier, the second heat seeking missile followed the signature of the departed right engine.

Here's a couple more poor quality photos.

Taken last night, looking West from our island. That's the ferry landing, below, where you catch the boat to come see us.

No matter where I fly in the U.S., my last ten miles is always the prettiest! :)

Here is a slide show of pictures taken while aviating in Oregon - set to music that makes them more palatable:

My instructor took this while we were flying to the practice area over the Missisippi River. Was my first time being that close to clouds, had to duck under a couple on the way back to the field.

Working hard to get this kid hooked on aviation(he pretty much is already) and get his flight training going. Tour of downdown Madison/isthmus area.

What variety of Piper are you flying there...looks nice.

N8262S is a Piper Archer. Not sure on the year.

It's actually beat pretty good but flies nice.

Whoa, those were awesome pics. Looked like you were at an airpark at 1:06, where was that? How many different airports did you land at and over how many days?

Glad you enjoyed the pictures. It was fun taking them. Had only intended them for personal memories.

The airport at 1:06 is Independence State, 7S5.

I count 17 different airports that I traveled to or from while taking those photos. Since it is a collection of photos taken over 4 years (flying 2 different planes and 3 different cameras) it is hard to assign a count to number of days involved. Not more than 3 airports in any one day. Typically just one.

I was delayed in Decatur, IL for several hours this evening, so I took a few shots of the plane in the storm. And sorry of the crappy graininess; lesson learned, I'll now bring an actual camera on my flights...

Nice, I actually like the graininess of the first photo, looks cool.
