Where we going?

Thirty years ago today I slipped the surly bonds and soloed in a Piper PA28-151. Two T&G's and a full stop on 10L at KBOI. To celebrate I flew into Boise and added one more T&G on 10L...
My buddy mentioned to me last week one day it was 40 years ago that day that he took his first flight lesson. I can't remember last year...

Nice looking commercial steep turns! Hey it was a little bumpy what can I say?

Well I didn’t make it to Oshkosh but I did some flying. As our boat withdrew from the Mackinac race, I spent time on the island supporting a few other crews. On my time off, I took some flights to hit new sights.

Mackinac Island Airport and my rental for three days in the foreground. This is the departure end of runway 08. I spent some time on the other end watching landings. Loads of people came up to me and asked me about airplanes/flying/etc.

Found something interesting buried in the UP. Saw folks racing cars up and down. Looks like it could have been an airport at one time, but runways looked in really good condition

Really loving these photos! Never flew non-commercial before but these photos are quite inspiring.

Yesterday I did a quick trip to Bloomington Indiana (KBMG). Flew back home this morning as the terrible weather was starting to approach.
As a former IU student it felt surreal to see it when school is out of session! Like an absolute ghost town with empty sidewalks. Posted a few photos in case there are any other IU alumni here.

Also this trip gave me motivation to finally hook up my goPro and capture my (bumpy) landing into DuPage before the storms hit! Beautiful flight at 4500 from BMG until about Joliet area. And then once I had to descend for the bravo airspace and got down to 3k, I got beat up a bit. Amazing how much difference 1500 feet makes for a smooth ride.

For a school known for basketball, I never went to a single game.
I did, however, go to nearly every football game since apparently I am a masochist and enjoy getting crushed by other teams.

The "Upstairs Pub" is where a lot of very hazy memories were made for me back in the day. But from what I can piece together in those memories -- I had a lot of fun there back in the day. I think.

Total ghost town! All the students are out of session so there's no deadbeats around slamming beers at Nicks playing "sink the biz"!

I put them on every time I park the plane. You really don't want any animals or stuff getting in the engines...
Seems like you're one of the few. I'm always amused to walk across a ramp and hear the jet engines clunking away in the breeze.

On the big jets they’re much harder to put on because the engines are way up there. The engines on the mustang are at head level for me so there really isn’t much excuse to not put them on unless it’s a quick fuel/lunch stop or something. But if I’m parking overnight, I put the covers on.

I so the same for our Ultra.

Plane at the ramp at HGI @KOSH right after I parked it.

what’s the trick to getting a room there for airventure ?

We want to go next year, but camping is not an option for this kid…

Money. Lots and lots of money.

Money. Lots and lots of money.

LOL ice cold a/c, a comfy bed, and not having to use a timer when I shower are definitely worth lots and lots of money to me.

Sounds like you're their ideal candidate lol. @RudyP will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they're around $700/night and sell out as soon as they open reservations, which was probably earlier this week.

Regarding HGI questions: The rooms are $650 /night during the show and I usually book 2-3 months ahead. I now know the owner and manager which helps somewhat but really the big advantage I get from that is that they allow me to only book the nights I want - typically they want people to book the full 7 nights (although they are OK with people splitting that across two people - eg person 1 from Sunday to Wednesday and person 2 from Wed-Sunday). The hotel has this crazy reputation that it is wildly expensive and impossible to book but I really don't think it is that bad. Of course you could get that room in February for <$100 but considering it is the biggest aviation event in the world, 650,000 people attended the show this year and there is only one hotel on the field, it does not seem that crazy to me. A halfway decent hotel room in manhattan on a random Tuesday is $650...

The ‘palatial’ (not) Days Inn in Fond du Lac was $350 a night all taxes etc included, for two nights mid-week, and had hot water and clean sheets. Adequate for the job, booked maybe 4 or 5 months ahead.

The Mexican Restaurant in Fond du Lac is BTW really excellent and relatively inexpensive according to this visitor from So Cal.
