On this warm but calm morning I took a flight downstream over the winding Gila River to seek out some more Arizona history. The river doesn't look like much, with only a trace of water to be seen here and there. But when there are heavy thunderstorms afoot the river becomes a raging torrent. Before the 1854 Gadsden Purchase, the Gila was the boundary between the US and Mexico. In 1851, a family of settlers was attacked by natives along the bank of the Gila. The parents and four of the seven children were killed; one daughter was held captive by the tribe for five years, while her sister died in captivity. The attack and massacre took place here, on what is now known as Oatman Flat: Thirteen nautical miles further downstream, in 1862, the westernmost skirmish of the Civil War took place at a stagecoach stop known as Stanwix Station. The Confederate detachment was led by 2nd Lt. John Swilling, who is today regarded as one of the founders of the city of Phoenix. Stanwix Station was located here:
Thanks! They're screen grabs from video taken on a GoPro Hero7 mounted on the left tiedown ring. 1080p 30 f/s.
I have been using this for three years now. Had to buy a swivel to adjust the angle... https://www.amazon.com/MyPilotPro-L...ds=gopro+airplane+mount&qid=1601567544&sr=8-4
I felt guilty posting my crap shots in this thread the first time... and the recent pics sure don't help me feel any better... but what the heck. Here's one today taken while my wife and I were up for a fall foliage tour. Still not quite at peak, but didn't want to miss an opportunity. This one is of a private airport where the runway is the back straight-away of a race track atop a nice hill (mountain, but not really). VERY cool... although we couldn't land because they were racing while we flew over.
Hey that's pretty cool! I enjoy this thread, discovered it recently but nice to see other parts of the country where people fly. As far as photo quality, I've yet to see a bad picture here, but Lowflynjack has certainly set a very high bar!!
Nice. What's the name of the track? I've heard they allow landings at Buttonwillow Raceway (west of Bakersfield) with special permission. It'd be fun if you kept your race car on the premises to fly in for the whole "arrive and drive" thing.
I know it’s not a great photo but it was my first time over 200 mph in level flight. I caught a great tail-wind on the way back from picking up my Cardinal RG after getting the failed alternator replaced in Booneville, AR. Gary
I bet we were out around the same time. What a beautiful morning to fly! The air was silky smooth too!
On the way to Dalton, Georgia this morning. I left the wing in the picture, knowing how popular it is.
I tried removing the wing for a better picture once. Don't do it! I could only turn in one direction, and it made landings real hard.
I'd rather be flying. Don't get me wrong, I can't imagine doing anything else for a living. I wish someone would wash these windows so I can take better pictures. we had one heck of a sunset last night
Those pics bring back so many memories for me. Except I was in a rice, cotton, wheat or soybean field. Sometimes driving the combine, sometimes the grain buggy and sometimes the truck to the gin or storage facility.
Its kinda hard to see, but I thought this was pretty cool. There was a Navy P8 doing pattern work, this was their left base to final turn, I was at 1000 so they were pretty low for a 737 on a base leg eh? The runway is behind the shot to the right(direction of blue arrow).
