Hello all,
I have an acquaintance with a pilot certificate. From what I have heard, there is at least one DUI in the past and maybe a second. I don't think they are flying currently but still talk like they want to continue and maybe purchase a plane. I took a look at the FAA pilot database for the person and am confused. The medical section shows "No Medical Information Available". But, the private pilot cert was issued in 2016. I looked at some other pilots I know and all have at least some reference to a medical of some type even if it is expired. Any idea why this person's info does not include any reference to a medical?

As always, thanks in advance!

Would a revoked medical show up as revoked or just gone?

My guess, he's all sizzle and no steak.

If the FAA would obey the law, he'd not have to worry about some nosy person peaking into his records. The FAA has no authority to release medical records to the public and they are to not release ANY records if the pilot ops out. Unfortunately, the FAA refuses to honor the law.

Do you also have a reason to care? Is it just idle curiosity, or do you actually have a stake?
I care. I have a stake in it. I appreciate your questions but I am truly looking for an answer. The person is involved with a family member. No reason for me to go further than that. Respectfully.

I will respect your desire for privacy.

That said,

Are we talking recent DUIs? I'm assuming no DUI in 2015/2016 when he (presumably) got his medical, hopefully he didn't lie on that application form.
Depending on how recent those DUIs were, the best thing you might be able to do is convince him not to fly as PIC.
Even if he could fly with BasicMed (can you, after a DUI?), I'd still say that the drinking issue needs to be properly sorted out first.

If he departed to the other direction he could have flown straight all the way to the Long Beach coastline with all the lights for reference.

One of my medical certs years ago never made it to the database.

A revoked med might look something like this:

Interesting. I had not seen a medical records like that before.

One DUI sometime just after getting the private cert. The other about 2 years ago.

@robertb, this is about as good an answer as you are going to get.
Yup. Thanks!

Then I stand by my original opinion - the best thing you could do is to have him always fly with someone else as PIC

If you know someone has a Alcohol addiction and got a PPL without any delay of medical with a DWI history, is it up to you to squeal on him or look the other way. How many addicted pilots could have been stopped before they killed themselves and others if someone would have squealed and stopped them. Alcohol addiction, once a alcoholic alyways one drink away, hard drugs Methamphetamine addiction less than 1% chance of kicking the addiction. If you know something and keep it to yourself, you are part of the problem.

How long can you ride on a horse that high before you require oxygen?

Since the number of aviation fatalities attributable to alcohol addiction is miniscule, the number that could be prevented by someone making an anonymous report without all the facts is similarly tiny.

And in fact, there's another thread on the forum right now about the problem with anonymous reports about stuff like this. So I would say to the op, if you're not close enough to the situation to have a conversation with the pilot about it, then you're really not close enough to do anything.

Where did you read that?
Studies indicate that approximately 61% of individuals recovering from methamphetamine use experience relapse within the first year of treatment. What they don't tell you is the other 38% and first 61% long term relapse, recovery centers will tell you treatment is available till they get your last dime or last that long then you fall into the 1% or 80,000 lives lost to street drugs in 2024. Kind of like 1920s, tuberculosis (TB) treatment centers, known as sanatoriums people went their for a cure but went their to die.

Yes, cite the studies. Easy to say ‘studies indicate’. As a reformed scientist, I understand what a peer reviewed publication is and what literature is bull$hi+. As asked, please provide citations.

As the OP to this thread... Thank you to those who contributed useful information about the database question originally requested. ;)
