Cessna C177 down - San Jose, CA

I suspect the nosedive was needed to clear the traffic light gantries at that intersection.

If you watch some of the dashcam videos, it clipped a light pole with the left wing and did a full roll at 25AGL. Amazing that they are reporting no life threatening injuries.
It was shockingly violent, so the best possible ending. Ain't no place to land around there:

I did a fair amount of flying out of RHV. There are no good places to land off-airport around there.

This will be one more incident that the shrill harpies will scream about and clutch their (synthetic) pearls over, and will be egged on by the developers who employ the city council and want to take over the airport property.

Well if it was because of negligence on the pilot or plane then they have a valid point.
Pilots stop crashing carelessly.

Those photos are post FD cleanup. So no, I wouldn't expect to see a bunch of fuel on the ground.
Pavement looks dry, no fire, etc. My dollar bet is still on no fuel on board.

This is one way to remove Flock cameras I guess.

There was a C172 that spiraled around a parking lot island end tree that also absorbed a lot of energy a few years ago.

I thought the County were the ones planning to close it. They're the ones who own it.

On the now defunct AOPA message board, somebody posted that if it ever ceases to be an airport, the terms of the property transfer to the County specify that ownership of the property reverts to the Reid family. I haven't figured out a way to verify this, however.

If a county or city wants to shut it down (CGX, and ISZ in my area, now also a park, and soon SMO) then developers are paying off pols.

SJFD reported cleaning up a fuel spill and later pics show kitty litter under the wreckage.

Doesn't mean the fuel selector wasn't in the off position or other fuel issues, but it does appear there was fuel on board.

I had presumed that the kitty litter in post #1 was for oil. However, I would have thought that fuel stains would be more prominent.

Last I heard, only unleaded fuel is allowed to be sold at RHV. I'm not sure what the colors of the available options are there.
