It will be a freakin' disaster. The number of diversions due to unruly pax will skyrocket.

Earplugs will be handed out on the jetbridge.....for $3!!

I see a cash cow.

Stun guns for the flight attendants! No wait, they'll just use 'em on the pilots.

I suppose Spirit and Allegiant would look more appealing, because we know they'd be too cheap too implement this. :)

So I am not in favor of cell phones on planes, but I am very much in favor of the Feds loosening the regulatory noSo and allowing the airlines to decide for themselves.

Remember the good ol' days when people used to make sure their conversations weren't overheard when talking on a payphone?

Is people talking on their cell phones at inappropriate times THAT common though? I always hear people complaining about it but I rarely see(hear) anyone doing it. Seems like most people prefer texting these days anyway.

Yes! People have no problem having loud obnoxious phone conversations whereever the hell they are. Cellphones seem to have authorized people to be rude. Three different conversations I recall are... Boss called the office to fire someone over the phone. Guy had a fight with his significant other. Woman talked to her gyn about her gyn issue. Even though we have a phone in our hand does not mean we should use it. And really, most calls should be personal and kept private.
STFU until you get home.

I see it daily! Its bad enough, trying to enjoy a burger and fries, with the guy at the next table loudly discussing some allegedly big deal involving untold millions in potential profits with an unseen co-conspirator. But, I even see it in the workplace setting. We have a gal that gleefully spends her time on the clock with her Bluetooth device sprouting from her ear, laughing loudly and gossiping with god-knows-who, when its clearly inappropriate (yes we complain, no- its a state job, almost impossible to get fired).

Yeah those Bluetooths on the ear got me a few times "are you talking to me?" and then I see the damn thing. And they usually talk loud. Annoying. 'merica isn't it grand!

For whatever reason, people SHOUT on cell phones. I don't think that would get better on an airplane.

Cell phones on a commercial flight would be just one more reason to get a more capable airplane and an IFR ticket.

OTOH, the way cell signals radiate, they may not be available at cruising altitude for airliners anyway.

When I'm in public and get a cell phone call, I always make it as brief and nondescript as possible. I refuse to share my private conversations in public and I refuse to be an annoyance to others. I wish that was the norm.

Agree. If at a restaurant sitting down, if it rings (usually have it off), I'll get up and answer somewhere out of range of other diners.

It would probably a sat phone service. I agree it would be a bad idea. Another thing I don't get is why people put their phone on speaker in public:confused:

People can switch over to WiFi and continue yammering that way. Truly annoying.

I can't believe I'm the only elitist prick that enjoys being "unreachable" for a few hours. Well, by voice anyway. I still use Skype and email when riding.

Fair enough. Maybe living in the polite (and private) rural midwest I am not seeing it as much. It's always been my first instinct to get away from other people when I'm having a phone conversation... mainly because I don't like being overheard but also not to bother others. I have noticed people from cities/heavily populated places don't seem to have that personal space instinct like I do. Drives me nuts and not just with phones. Around here gabbing on your phone at work is seen as a firing offense and usually when you hear a ringtone in a restaurant it's an older person who still hasn't figured out how to work their phone. Even then they usually step outside or ask the other person to call back later.

But back to the topic at hand... could they just allow texting through? I've got no problems with people texting on a flight, I might even do it myself... if I ever set foot on a commercial airliner again.

Why do many folks automatically raise their voice level 10dB or so to talk on the phone. Maybe 50 years ago but not with today's technology.

Regular phones have a strong sidetone. I'm not sure cell phones have a sidetone at all. I believe that's the issue.

I dunno, when we had a landline wifey was loud talkin' on those too! :D

Hope she doesn't read this....

I have times when I don't even take the cell phone with me.

My grandfather would do this, same with his television set. I assumed it to be a mixture of old age along with hearing loss. If it's not one decibel from shattering glass he couldn't hear it.

Because they can't hear the person on the other end, they assume they must amplify their voice to compensate.

It was bad too, because I'd try to call him sometimes and he could never hear the phone because his TV was too loud.

Yes.

And I have a couple of really good stories about this but won't put them here.

Goto one of the coasts or a big city. You'll see it all the time. I miss trees, rain, and green stuff but the community I'm in now is so much better. Fly over states are awesome.
