... went flying instead.

Not a lot of colors in our trees. I was going to a corn maze to take pictures, but my camera battery had been acting up and crapped out right as I got there. I was able to snap one picture before it died completely.

I'd love to get in a plane and leisurely head down to your area for fun. But the airplane is just sitting in storage for now and I don't see the point of flying it till after I heal up from a surgery on my foot in a couple weeks. Hopefully by the end of November I'll be ready.

Haven't flown it since about August of last year. Lotta new goodies to enjoy when I do.

Thinking of heading out to the Kansas Badlands about 70nm west of Hays if you want to split time on a day trip.

I just love the whole concept of this thread.... I have seriously thought of doing the same thing every day this week (and last)... I really should learn to follow my heart...:mad2:

When I lived in Newport News (many, many years ago) I wasn't flying yet. I'd really like to get back there and see that whole region from the air.

I had a rough go of it most of this year, flying-wise, so I'm trying to make up for lost time by getting back in the air a bit at a time. Today was double-good because I had some use-it-or-lose-it vacation to burn, and wx was great.

Are you using your airplane to cheat at a corn maze? That's just low. Nicely done.

You would mostly likely not recognize a lot of it (depending on when you lived here). There's been some growth so the traffic stinks and all the other pains that go along with growth. KPHF is about the same and flying in the area hasn't changed much. KPHF still gets a lot Gov't traffic shooting approaches, but you get use to it.

Glad you were able to take one for the team and enjoy a morning flight...

PHF - the joke back when I lived there (mid-late 70s) was that Patrick Henry International only had one flight per year that went outside the US, but that was enough to call it an "International" airport. Maybe it wasn't a joke.

I lived there through jr high and one year of high school, then we moved away for two years. My folks moved back for a while but by then I was in college and only made it back out there during summer or Christmas breaks.

I got onto Google one time and found that both my jr high and high school no longer exist.

, The funny thing is that they changed the name a while ago, but chose to keep the "International Airport" part. I don't remember there being any international flights, heck, they are struggling to keep the few regional flight that still remain.

So, was it Newport News High or Ferguson High?

The only requirement to be an international airport is the availability of a customs and immigration facility.

What was wrong with Patrick Henry ? It's not anywhere close to Williamsburg.

Looks like a great way to spend the morning Matthew, thanks for sharing the pics!

Homer L Ferguson. The Mariners.

I think the Jr High was Newport News Intermediate School. I remember that school busing had just been implemented for integration. My bus drove right past the jr high about 2 miles from my house, all the way downtown. The only good thing was the bus route went right past the shipyard so I got to watch the first three Nimitz class carriers being built.

IDK, we all ask the same question...:dunno: My guess is they wanted to tap into that Williamsburg tourist angle...:yikes:

Oh yeah, I remember when they did that. That was a nightmare...:yikes: What were they thinking. Well Ferguson High was eating up by Christopher Newport University (CNU). The Ferguson Center for the Arts sits on the site now. A pair of theaters used for concert, plays and the like. It's named for the locally based company I work for because of the HUGH contributions they have made to CNU. You know giving back to the community and all that... Good PR...

The shipyard is still here and turning out carriers and other ships of mass distruction. It's changed hands a few times, and I don't remember who owns it now.

I hope you get a chance to get back to visit. If you do look me up and I'll treat you to your poison of choice...:goofy:

I'm going to have to Google Earth like crazy to try to find the old 'hood.

Haa! Check out Todd Stadium. In the back lot was where I took some driver's ed classes. They still use it. The skid pad is still there, too.

Best I can remember, I went to both those schools...sort of:

Newport News High had been turned into Newport News Intermediate School, and I went there for 2 years.

I went to Ferguson High for one year (sophomore year).

Both are closed. Good times.

edit:

Google Earth comes through again.

This is the first house I lived in, and I *think* this is the second one. The second one is in the right neighborhood and street and side of the street but might not be the exact address.

I'm thinking someone has a new item on their bucket list... Don't know what you're flying but it would be a great adventure flying to the right coast...:rollercoaster: Google Earth is awesome. I don't know how we lived before it came along. I think they are are still doing student driver training at Todd. I think the school bus drivers train there also...

And Fuller's Chili in Phoebus. Their sign said "Eat Dirt Cheap". I did stop in there once.

And many a late night watching Doctor Madblood:

Went up Maple Leaf Festival weekend and flew along Vinland Valley. The colors were just not there yet. Maybe in a few more days.

I wonder which airport in CONUS has one and is the furthest from an international border...

Never been to k34, I have seen it many times, landed at kojc and kixd a few times. Most often go to downtown. Flew to Des Moines last week, talk about corn for days. Starting to see some color up there. Not much change in the Wichita area yet.

Could be. Can't think of a way to automate that search.
Lebanon, KS is supposed to be the geographic center of the lower 48. KC, Wichita, and Omaha look to be the closest potentials. I don't know if there is somplace in AK that would count, but Honolulu might win on a technicality.

Neither does Kansas . . . What does it matter?

It means that Hawaii most likely has the international airport farthest from any international border thus lending credence to Matthew's mentioning of HNL winning on a technicality. Though as most of us know, Hawaii isn't CONUS which was the initial premise.

Do try and keep up.

I don't think KCI has one. That is why Global Entry applicants have to go to St. Louis, Dallas, Chicago, or Devner for the interview.

Yup. That's why I said CONUS. :)

But I'm not sure the geographic center works right. Can get to KS from across the Gulf of Mexico... the actual furthest from a border might be further east, but Bermuda and Cuba and whatnot have to be considered. :)

I know that KCI/MCI has an international area, but I can't remember ever seeing it in use. I think there are occasional flights to/from Mexico. Pretty much evey other "international" flight that begins or ends in MCI routes through someplace else. STL might be closer to Canada than MCI is to the gulf coast, dunno.

Air Georgian (GGN) 7321 appears to be a daily flight from Toronto to Kansas City, so its international designation is getting some use, at least. I often laugh that the small, uncontrolled field 45 miles from me with just a couple of regional jets coming in each day is designated as an international airport, but if I make a flight to Canada it is nice to know that I can land close to home instead of going out of the way to find a port of entry into the USA.
